Jaber can slot in for Lake. Leave McCutcheon in midfield. I'd like to see Wall at LB and Tanaka get a start. Newcastle favourites to win this for mine.
Does anyone know what the deal is with Lake's injury?
Bex had an ice-pack on one of her feet almost immediately after being subbed off. B̶u̶t̶ I̶ d̶o̶n̶'t̶ k̶n̶o̶w̶ w̶h̶e̶t̶h̶e̶r̶ i̶t̶'s̶ t̶h̶a̶t̶ i̶n̶j̶u̶r̶y̶ k̶e̶e̶p̶i̶n̶g̶ h̶e̶r̶ o̶u̶t̶ o̶r̶ s̶o̶m̶e̶t̶h̶i̶n̶g̶ e̶l̶s̶e̶.
Edit: seems it is a foot injury "Coach Paul Temple said it was a 'pretty nasty foot injury' suffered in tackle during the first half of last weekend's match but the Phoenix are waiting on scans to determine how long Rebecca Lake will be out for." https://x.com/ByPhillipRollo/status/1857211385584996503
Not a very auspicious start for Chebel but excited by the prospect of seeing Jerez getting some minutes.
Thought Jerez was a bit average in the recent FIFA u-20 Women's World Cup. I've never seen her outside of that but I know that people up north rate her. Interested to see how she goes.
Match preview: https://wellingtonphoenix.com/news/ninja-a-league-round-3-match-preview/ Newcastle have delivered the most crosses in the league, have the third best passing accuracy and have the highest expected goals (xG) for. The Phoenix are fifth in xG for. They were expected to have scored four goals in the first two rounds but have found the back of the net just twice. The heat is likely to be a factor on Sunday, with the temperature forecast to be 30 degrees come kick-off in Maitland. Paul Temple’s squad are “a little bit bruised and battered” following the 1-0 defeat to Canberra United last weekend. Vice-captain Rebecca Lake hasn’t travelled because of a foot injury, joining fellow centre back Imane Chebel on the sidelines, but Portuguese goalkeeper Carolina Vilão is expected to keep her place in the starting XI despite being forced off at halftime at Porirua Park. Scholarship players Ella McMillan and Ela Jerez have travelled to Newcastle with Temple taking an extended 18-strong squad across the Tasman as the women will spend next week in Sydney in the lead-up to Friday’s Unite Round match against Adelaide United at Leichhardt Oval. “It’s pretty much just a dead leg, which is very painful for the first few days but she’s coming right, and we wouldn’t expect her to be out this weekend.”
We seem to be pretty soft in the challenges. Easily bumped off the ball. Can't really see where our goals are going to come from right now. Did we have a shot on goal? Need something from the bench to change things up. Our best combative midfielder in McCutheon is playing RB and hardly involved. I don't get it.

I'd like to see both Tanaka and Fergusson off the bench - they should both be able to add something going forward.
The only issue maybe is neither will be too used to playing in the heat
Wow lucky to reach half time at 0-0 tbh. Agree we've not been physical enough and a bit too nice, losing our 50/50s way too much, and generally not tight enough in defence to prevent their chances.
Officiating hasn't been great tbh - I counted at least four clear fouls not given, and it's suiting the Jets physicality more than it suits us.
That has to got to be one of the worst misses in a game of football I've ever seen. The ball was moving slow, the defense was completely afk and the keeper was off somewhere
Funnily enough we were better in the second half and that's the half we lost.
Subs didn't make the impact we hoped for, wasn't convinced by Ferguson, and Tanaka when she came on just didn't get involved enough.
Frustrating to again labour and not create enough good chances when behind - we seem a bit predictable like teams know what we're gonna do. At the same time a bit uncohesive and player combinations in the final third that aren't suited to each other.
