Wellington United jokes aside I find it a little strange that people curse the signing of a player like Griffiths when we have the likes of Muscat and Siggy in our side already. Those two have had their fair trot of run ins with opposition and refs but they are both highly competitive and effective professionals. Both would be quite unpopular with other clubs' fans but are very good players in this league. If Ernie thinks he can get something out of a proven player like Griffiths why is it such a bad signing? Particularly given the relatively low risk signing that it is...

Griffiths was/is Newcastle's/Avispa Fukuoka's/Beijing Guoan's/Shanghai Shenhua's/Sydney's/Qingdao Jonoon's cnut. Siggy and Manny are our cnuts.

ok, this pisses me off. Strikers should never wear a shirt number below 7, in much the same way defenders should never wear numbers between 7 and 11 and no player should ever wear a shirt with a number over 50.

Eto'o at Everton wearing 5, Gallas at Arsenal wearing 10, El Shaarawy at Milan wearing 92 - fudge off the lot of you.

Its the free squad number vacated by Caira. Appiah-Cubi got 11.

If you were Appiah-Cubi, you might be a bit annoyed that this guy just comes straight in considering you were signed a week ago to do much the same thing. (and yes I know the goal scoring record is different before some smart ass points it out. Just looking at it from his point of view)

If Appiah-Kubi thinks he should be in the squad straight away, then he's probably not the right fit for us. He will need to work hard to get in the team.

Problem is pointless A-League reglations that prevent us using a number over 23 as he isn't a guest player, injury-replacement or promotion from the youth team.

What is this constant player bashing? Sure all players want to play and they think they are good players. We want strikers they are confident, specially in front of the goal. We should not judge them by some out of the context interviews. I'm pretty sure they all hard training with clear goals and aware of current limitation. Imagine they would say that they are fine on the bench, just here for the pay check. It's good when they move on, Boyd, or like to show what they can add to the team, Appiah-Cubi, Griffith.

As much as I wanted Boyd to stay, develop, then  potentially turn into another Marco I couldn't see him winning us a title this year.

The bottom line is that the transfer of Griffiths has made us a stronger team at a time when we have lost our mojo.

It's the business end of the season and we we could do with a strong striker who can stick the ball into the net. The Haters will then turn lovers.

It's a good move by Ernie.

Rumour in Hamilton is Logan Rogerson has been offered a 3 year contract after training with the team last week.

To take effect when he turns 17 should he accept.

Have not seen a huge amount of him, but based on the u17 highlights of their qualification campaign where he was named MVP, he looked a really good prospect. Big lad, but pretty agile with good feet.

did anyone see Ifill retweeting tweets from a Brazilian who is moving to NZ? Magno Viera - bit of a UK lower league journeyman.

According to wikipedia he trialled for the Phoenix a few years ago.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magno_Vieira

No he was tweeting a week ago that he was starting a new life in NZ.  Actually, my guess is he's coming to play for Ifill at Wairarapa.  Sorry, wrong thread

Sorry this was the young lad that played up front for the recent NZ under 17s team right? I assume you are talking about the Phoenix offering him a deal?

I think he is a good prospect but I also think that is odd. Why would they not get him to Wellington 1st with the ASB or academy farm program and then see how he goes rather than offer him a 1st team deal for 3 years. Is he really that good? (and by that, I mean, is he an out of sight home run football talent that we need to lock him up now). How would he compare to the young boy the Weenix have up front Halliemarian (spelling?) whom is already in the program?

Wouldn't bet on that.  With Boyd and Fenton moving on and over 20 we have spots(s) for youngsters in the foirst team youth spots he could be being lined up for one of those.

Pretty sure Ernie has stated they will be looking for 3 new youngsters for next season (not sure where that leaves Rufer and Ridenton).

Both have contracts for next season. We have 6 roster spots to sign for next season, 1 being a visa. I would think Hicks, JBS and Boyd will be replaced with kids.

I think Hicks will get another year.

Ernie likes him and he fits our style. He would have played more minutes bar for injury at the start of the year. Has a Boxall type role in the team (before Manny got suspended and Fenton injured).

I wouldnt be against Hicks re-signing but if he was going to be re-signed, you would have thought he would have by now. There was talk he was looking elsewhere to get game time and with Ridenton & Rufer in their final years, they should be given a chance to prove they are worth re-signing. Keeping Hicks blocks their progress imo.

You would think that for 'brand' reasons one of the weenixers would be the recipient of a 'kids' contract. If you're handing these out on potential I reckon Dimario might be worth a shot. At the same time the nix don't have a mortgage on all players either. Anyone else for a youth contract ? Wanderers? Ole? ASB franchise?

I would be surprised if Hicks (a proven goalscorer for the senior team) would be omitted for a youngster like Rufer who has not yet been tested enough, in my opinion. So I do not see Hicks as blocking progress of Ridenton and Rufer. He may not be a star but is useful and a great squad player to date. Roly can score from a free kick, but name another player in Hicks' field position who does.

I am not saying Rufer or Ridenton are not worth cultivating. What I am saying is that I rate Hicks higher than I rate someone like say JBS.

Matt Simons contract is not going to be renewed by CCM at the end of the season.  I didnt realise that he is only 28.  We signed Joel and that has worked out,  maybe we can revivie Matt Simons career next season too - (I have always disliked him)

He's had persistent groin issues for the last year or two. Big punt.

I'm not trying to bag Simon (I like his pluck) but he's a limited footballer. Other than Newwy (which I don't see happening for obvious reasons) I'm not sure he's going to find a gig in the A-League.

I would suggest that he would want regular football and not just a bit part as plan B.

Griff can play wide (and thus can slot into the system) where as Simon is a classical striker. He just doesn't fit the system Ernie is playing IMHO. Can't see it happening at the Nix.

Citeh on the other hand would be a potential fit as a backup to Kennedy but then you would have two persistently injured strikers on the books. Also, as mentioned, can't see Simon wanting to be a backup too much. But maybe I am wrong on that.

Worse goal scoring record than Brockie. He is an injury prone cart horse up front, whose job it is to hassle defenders & hold up the ball. His style doesn't suit what Ernie has achieved over the last couple seasons, I can't see him being of interest for us.
