I'm interested in the new Apple TV which is supposed to be announced in June. It's rumoured to have it's own App Store and h.265 support.

It would be great to see a native PLP app on the new Apple TV and a nice bump in video quality assuming Neulion are primed and ready to offer h.265 streams for their partners.

PLP really is ideal for watching the final round.

Yeah a little. Still cool that Gutierrez got the goal that sealed it for Newcastle, plus Gerard and Lampard both scored on their last games in EPL. I enjoyed it. Think I watched the right games.

Was watching 5th -7th for a while before realising Liverpool were in anyway because of fair play league. Then started watching Liverpool and city because of Gerard and Lampard - but yeah mostly was keeping eye on the hull and Newcastle games.

Overall thoughts on PLP for this season? And compared to last if you had it?

For me I think it was better than last season. Picture quality seemed better and it was smoother, though still a bit jerky at times and still not as good as watching on Sky. I watched all the Arsenal games and barely any others, and the highlights most weeks. Usually been ok at the highest quality although in a couple of games near the end I did get a lot of buffering and had to watch at a lower quality but that may be due to the internet in my house not being that great sometimes (and still ADSL). May also be because I was watching at prime time in the evening after work. I suspect it wouldn't have worked that well if I tried to watch 4 games at once as above.

Great to be able to watch when I want without having to remember to record or worry about how much space is left on the MySky etc. There were also a few weekends in the season I was away from home and was still able to watch easily.

I split the cost and shared it with my Dad and we just coordinated to watch at different times. Worked mostly OK as he's retired so has more time in the week and gets up early so on a Sunday he could usually finish a game before I was up. He also tended to watch a few games a week as he had the time.

I expect you don't get the jerkiness through the apps and my main issue is that 2 seasons in there is still no app available to me despite having a smart TV, tablet, smart phone, PS4 and PS3. Unfortunately got all the wrong brands and operating systems. So I still have to connect my laptop to my TV. Earlier in the season when their partnership with Lightbox was announced and then Lightbox released PS4 and PS3 apps I asked PLP on Facebook whether they would have an app for Playstation and they replied that it was a possibility for next season so I hope that happens. Either that or Chromecast.

Pretty much agree with that. Better performance than last season, as expected.

And that's a good point about not having to record etc. Although MySky is handy, I have had issues going out and forgetting to record things in the past. Handy not having to do that with PLP.

The evolution continues though - I read a while back that the latest Freeview box mixes on-demand with the planner, so in the guide, you can go forwards to record, or you can go backwards and watch whatever you want. That is clever. Saw an article yesterday that Sky are going to do that too.

We are in an interesting time right now - we're basically at the tipping point where internet and tv merge to truly become one. I am sitting on the fence wondering what to do with my total internet/tv costs, been talking seriously with the missus over the last few weeks about finally ditching sky and getting lightbox/netflix or something to satisfy our film/tv series needs. Only problem is sport and what to do there. PLP has broken away but not a lot else. Need remaining programming to hurry up and catch up with the industry now so that our options continue expanding. This cross-over grey area is messy and expensive.

Been thinking about the same lately as there's not a lot we actually watch on Sky that's not on the FTA channels, other than major sports events (tennis majors, World Cups etc) and the odd film. But don't think it's worth switching to only internet TV until we get ultra fast broadband. Best we can get is still ADSL and as mentioned it doesn't always cope well with PLP at the highest quality. UFB is not coming to our street for at least another year. And even when it does, we are renting up a shared driveway with 3 other houses (2 of which are also rented) so there are probably too many people who need agree to the driveway being dug up for it to happen. Can try and ask when the time comes but guess it would only need one person to say they don't want the disruption for it not to happen.

yeah sky keeps it expensive annoyingly.

Worked out can ditch sky, get all my American sports online plus PLP and lightbox/Netflix (like now), then VPN to America and get foxsoccer2go which has A league, NRL, champions league, FA cup plus more (live and on demand). Ends up a lot cheaper than having sky.

Currently only things would miss out on is test cricket, all blacks (meh), and FIFA tournaments. That 8 year deal between sky and FIFA was a bit of a downer.

All Blacks, I could watch elsewhere, every man and his dog watches that so there's always somewhere to go, or delayed on Prime at a stretch. The cricket and Super 15 however :(

I understand Sky are reviewing the way they package their deals, so really hoping they go to a more user-friendly model where you can select and pay for specific channels/events in a more isolated manner.

Then I could buy the sport I want and ditch them for everything else - although I guess that will be exactly what they try to avoid when they produce their new model though.

Was that a typo or can you really watch NRL on foxsoccer2go tegal?

yep they have NRL.

Super15 you can get on fanpass via Sky. Bit expensive (it's sky) but still cheaper than $1200 a year

That does sound a good option. Do you need a US credit card though? Other than that I'd just need somewhere for tennis and cricket, even then with cricket I only tend to watch England matches. Same with rugby, only tend to watch England games/6 Nations and can usually get them on BBC Iplayer which I discovered for the recent 6 Nations when matches were delayed on ESPN. As Paul said, if there was some big popular game I wanted to watch there would be somewhere to watch it.

From memory when I looked at it last the Hyundai A-League games weren't on-demand.

On-Demand is basically a necessary feature for internet based services. Not many people have the ability to record live streams for more convenient viewing.

Until on-demand is available, you may as well consider shark illegal streams (as they are free).

I tried it recently and it was on demand. Everything on there is on demand for 7 days, except something (can't remember which) that is only for 3 days.

I signed up for a month with a NZ credit card to try it out.

For FIFA tourneys you should be able to VPN to Europe (UK best bet) and watch most games on either BBC or iTV (Or corresponding in whatever countries) which are both free (I did this early in the 2014 World cup as I was in process of moving house without Sky)

Thanks Tegal, had been looking at this as my option from Start of next season as well. Definitely sounds like that will join my current streaming.

Lightbox + Netflix + PLP + NHL + NFL + Fox :D (BBC & ITV for other stuff), need somewhere for some of the Motorsport as that seems to be the only thing I can't get a reliable place to stream from.

Fanpass for F1? Same problem with super rugby as it's quite expensive (sky...) but am sure you'd get value out of it.

at $300 for the season it's just a bit steep, am looking at overseas options to see what I can find. Is a bit annoying as it seems FIA are very anal with their TV rights.

Cool might give it a try for a month. Would replace most of what I use Sky for. Out of interest, what commentary do you get? American or still the home commentary?

The take home point of this thread for me is that people are prepared to pay for good quality Internet broadcasters with decent features (the on-demand thing for me is a deal breaker). I haven't watched much EPL this year even though I have a subscription (obvious reasons). I hope Coliseum can pick up the Championship now that Sommet is dead. The Championship really is an amazingly competitive league.

Free Copa America is their earlybird special this year it seems.

Hopefully they offer that NFL game pass discount again.

Just asked about this on Facebook and they have replied that there will be no Playstation app and the platform will be the same for next season. Disappointing that connecting the laptop to the TV will remain my only option to watch it on my TV for a third season. Since they have partnered up with Lightbox who have developed PS4 and PS3 apps I can't imagine it would have been a lot of work to adapt them.

I believe they got it for 3 seasons so it should come up for bidding again after next season. Will be interesting to see what happens then.

Price increased is also a bit disappointing. For this season we paid $150 for earlybird, but next season it's $200 with the earlybird deal being "free Copa America." I notice a pass for just Copa America is $50 on its own so I question whether we are getting it free or just having no choice but to pay for it as well.

yeah that lightbox partnership doesn't seem to have amounted to anything.

Maybe because it runs out after this season they want to secure the rights before committing to anything. I think some people are right, sky will go ridiculously high with their bid (and pay well more than it's worth) just to screw with coliseum.

Classic monopoly tactic, use the rest of their business to subsidise the crushing of competition.

Of course the problem Sky has is that they are now facing this competition on multiple fronts.

Coliseum taking them on in Sports

Netflix & Lightbox taking them on in Movies & TV content

None of these competitions are likely to be easily forced out of the market, Coliseum seems to have some large offshore backers who are looking at Sports streaming across Asia as a future so they will be willing to compete. While Lightbox can just be backed by Spark's funds and Netflix is a world wide TV Provider now.

Not sure these are competition that Sky can push out using their current platforms. Going to be fun for sure.

It wouldn't surprise me if their subscriptions fall, we were having this discussion on Saturday after our game, and of the 17-18 guys there, around 10 of them have PLP and most said they actually watched it less this season than ever and weren't keen on a $50 increase as all had been early adopters, and most said they doubted they'd sign up again.

It doesn't strike me as a great way to look after those who took the plunge with them in Season 1 (and 2).

I just love it when a Spurs game is the featured game on TV1, as the kids i get up and watch the game together, forwarding through bits of it as we don't always have the best part of 2 hours to watch a full game and they won't sit through the entire 90mins.

Since PLP the kids and i rarely watch a game, i sincerely hope SKY get this back and with the promise of their new online service (the upgrading of the set-top boxes) beginning soon they may well be able to offer what PLP do now.

It surprises me to hear that the extra $50 is putting some off to be honest.  I'm quite looking forward to the Copa America.

On a Nationwide scale, I'd have no idea if this venture was/is a success or not.  I just hope SKY don't win back the rights as I'm really happy with the service.

Their current MySky boxes can do users choice - Foxtel have been offering it on EPL games for years (on the exact same hardware), it's awesome, I do miss it.

It's now $199 which is the price for all subscribers since Season 2 but it was $149 in Season 1 and if you had subscribed to Season 1, they offered you that price in Season 2, but that option's gone for Season 3.

yeah it's the same price but the discount for earlybird renewing subscribers has been replaced by free Copa America for ALL earlybird subscribers.

Not going to please everyone but I like it and am looking forward to Copa America goodness to tide me through the offseason.

If they add in the NFL game pass discount again it'll be perfect for me.
