WPM 2021/22 Squad Speculation, Confirmation and Mutual Termination
Elliot has 2 years to go, ie was a 3 year deal. Xanthi may hope he shines at the Olympics, so can sell him to someone.

I knew Elliot signed a multi season deal but since he isn't playing, maybe they would just let him go cuz they didn't get promoted. I guess a good showing at the Olympics might raise his stocks tho.
Still worth asking about tho
Whooohooo! Awesome work Domey & Co.!!!

Speaking of which, what's the latest gossip on when the 21/22 season is likely to start?

Last gossip I saw back in May was an October start date. Covid lockdowns have been a huge shadow over all sport here in Australia the last few weeks, but certainly the June A League Grand Final seemed lower profile that usual.
State of Origin league, local football focus moving towards the Olympics, lots of news about the Euros.
Think the APL & owners will want a April/May finals series next year, so yes an earlier start date of October. Who knows like 2017, the Socceroos could be involved in the intercontinental playoffs again (next June), so another reason maybe to bring the finals series forward.
But there is also talk to trying to 'align' the A League & NPL seasons, as a 2nd Division supposedly moves closer to getting off the ground.

Maybe we’ll have pre-season games? FFA cup runs?
I still cant fathom signing both Hemed and Hooper.
UNLESS, we are signing a GUN Kiwi/Aussie midfielder
Will he play 4-4-1-1. Hooper and Hemed up top, Waine as back-up?
Err, do you mean 4-4-2? I don't see either Hemed or Hooper playing attacking mid or shadow striker role.

Maybe both and either? Interchangeably? Both dropped deep with some success at various times. The question of defense would be an interesting one.
Also probable that both would have some time out injured and that one could be an impact sub or vice-versa. Uffie seemed quite good at tweaking formations and tactics to fit personnel at the back end of the season?
Disclaimer: My formation knowledge is from pro-evo 6.
What a change, best off season ever!
Coventry City are in talks with Wellington Phoenix over the signing of 25 year old New Zealand midfielder Alex Rufer. #PUSB @Coventry_City @WgtnPhoenixFC @ALeague pic.twitter.com/FtQ9Xy536v

They were the club trying to sign Waine, so is kinda plausible

Also, if he goes it's going to make things tough to replace two midfielders who are A-League starter level.

Some cash for Rufer would be nice but would make the DM spot pretty tight to recruit

He's the most unfairly maligned Nix player since Vinnie. He's definitely got his limitations, but he's not the absolute waste of space that Facebook fans (and some on here) would have you believe.

I wonder if losing him will make us reconsider Ridenton as a depth option.
I can see why he would be keen to look elsewhere though, he's not quite commanding a starting spot, but is probably too good to be a bench player his whole career.
I would definitely be hoping for a Howieson/Musa type signing alongside Lewis and an import.

Are there any up and coming local CM/DMs?

Wasn't Ridenton one of the players recently announced as being released?

He's 25, having spent 8 years in Wellington. Could all get a bit stale after awhile, especially if you just become a bench player with limited playing time. If I was him I'd absolutely jump at the chance to be at a Championship club in the UK, with it's all encompassing football culture. New exciting experience. Even if it's just a one year deal, and doesn't work out he knows he's always likely a good shot to come back to the A League. Or get noticed even by a League One level type club. Born in Geneva, so presume holds a Euro passport?
Maybe is also a sign that Uffie has told him, that he is looking for a visa DM to replace Devlin, and play alongside Lewis. So if Hemed stays, Ball drops into the ten role. Has all gone quiet on that gossip 'Nix in talks with a Davila latino AM upgrade'.

Still content to just play Northern League football, or is there an itch to play at a higher level like his peers Payne, Lewis etc? Those regular CWC appearances could well be over, and he was probably in that big Eden Park crowd lapping up the buzz.

That would be a pretty sharkty conversation:
"Hey Matt, I know we said we weren't interested but now, well you know, now that Alex could be leaving do you think you'd mind signing a deal where we keep you if he does go, but if he stays, well you know we probably wont need you"
Cant see the nix doing it or Matt accepting it.

Don't expect it to happen though.
