Very valuable gametime for a lot of our youth/ subs. PRSO playing as 'not-a-striker' upfront was a bit odd for me. Back four looked solid, dealt with the pace of the pacy forward Western had, althoug Theo attacking our right side looked to be where their goal would come.

I actually think it would he great for us to give the FFA cup a real crack at this season. Realistically that's the most likely silverware we have a chance of winning this season. And since we've never won anything... I'd be keen to see us try!

Meaningless comp when you get teams fielding B teams

silverware is never meaningless......you play whoever the opposition puts infront of you.

If you put out a B team then you clearly don’t care much for the competition. Simples.

Metalleg: I think that you and I watched different matches. I'll disregard the first half because I don't think that Pennington played particularly well in the first half. In the second however he was the most available player on the pitch. He was also the most solid of the defensively minded players especially in the last 20 minutes. I think that he was key in getting the result in the end.

Yep, and with the lack of depth we have in the squad we can't afford to take it seriously.

Still, without a reserve team it's an opportunity to get game time in fringe players legs so I hope we get a bit further.

Being honest I thought our young Australians out there were all MIA.  The kids straight out of school in NZ performed better them the Aussie guys with pro experience.

Not sure about that. They were simply less used to play at that level because their opportunities before they joined Phoenix were limited. In contrast, our "kids straight out of school in NZ" either play for the Nix, move overseas, or sink without a trace after a few seasons if they are not good enough.  Players across the ditch, they have enough clubs to shop their talents around, against stiff opposition. Some may end up with us if no other club wants them; that is one of the outcomes of us spending a lot of time in Wollongong, not Wellington.
Talay is an expert at finding the right talent and working with them to bring the best out of them; regardless of the level they've played at. If he contracted them then I trust his assessment. I also understand that money is limited, playing in Australia second year running.

Looking at the goal and the build up. Lewis, Fenton and Waine clearly did very well. But who made 4 touches as the playmaker in the build up? Answer: Pennington

that may be the case but it doesnt mean the competition is worthless. If, as a club, the nix want to win silverware then the FFA cup is a good start.

Pennington did some good defensive work at the end and made a couple blocks... but I'd argue one of the reasons he was having to do so much defending was because as a team, we didn't control the ball well enough.

I don't think he was bad, just not as good as I hoped. Still early doors.

I'm sure that Prso and Van Hattum switched early on after WSW were having a lot of success attacking down our right.

Hemed was trash for half a season. Think it’s a case of jury still out.
