Mauragis is a decent pick up, he will push Sutton for the starting spot. Would have preferred a young Kiwi but there isn't many A-League ready options floating around.
Yeah I agree a loan isn't ideal but I think Uffie and co see it as more of a stop-gap signing to fill in and cover for Sutton and then reassess next season with Sutton maybe likely to leave with a new starting LB
Still disappointed we couldn't of got someone a little bit more experienced who could've been a mentor to Sutton. Still happy with how the team looks in general, hoping we get a good replacement for Piscopo and a prolific target man to take Hooper's place.
As many have pointed out, we're developing a player we likely won't have at the club post this season. Hopefully, Mauragis is subsequently on almost no money to essentially be a backup/3rd choice. Would surely then free up money for importing ST/CB/Winger. Financially a smart choice and we could've had far worse options to be a stopgap.
So we lose three useful players to the Jets for nothing and sign one of their young players to develop on their behalf because they can't be fudgeed? Whats the point LOL
Have we been transfer market cucked by the fudgeing Newcastle Jets of all fudgeing teams!?
Such a weird point of view...
Doesn't matter where the old players go, as long as the ones we are replacing them with are better. And so far, they are.

What's the sample size of experienced players, that are good enough to mentor Sutton, available and willing to join as a backup to Sutton with a low salary given the amount of minutes they are expected to contribute and in the context of a salary capped league, and also preferably not a VISA player.

Dan Morgan, Corey Brown, Michael Zullo (although injured), Tom Doyle (no thanks though), Deklan Wynne, Ivan Vujica, James Meredith, Dylan Murnane.
Although tbh I’m reasonably happy with this Mauragis bloke, I’d probably only have Dan Morgan or Deklan Wynne instead of him from that list.

Why does Sutton need a older mentor? Hasn't had one to date. Makes more sense to bring a younger player through, to potentially replace him when he leaves.
Paulsen is the one guy where you think, makes some sense to have an older guy (ALM journeyman) as a backup - if Sail leaves.

Well I guess you could say McGarry was sort of a mentor to him, considering how he is four years older than Sutton.
Just dont get some peoples view on the latest signing doubt he has cost us much money and not sure i get the criticism at what is still an early stage of Talay assembling his squad. Such a crime we should develop a young player who moves on we cant be seen to be doing that can we. Seems some seem to think we just have to offer a contract to a player and the sign on.
It's really hard to comment on signings without knowing wages and how they fit in the salary cap.
100% this. I've always thought we should follow in the steps of the MLS in this regard, where what the players are paid is released annually.
Would certainly make it much more transparent.
Plus I've always liked numbers, and quirky stats so it'd be cracking to put out figures - the likes of salary paid for goals scored etc. Would also be good to see players who are perpetually injured and how much of a cap they potentially take up.
Rollo put a link on twitter to a South American page suggesting Rojas is potentially going to Colo-Colo in Chile (apparently his boyhood/family club as per an old Spanish article on his wiki page)
Also, it seems from looking at what Newcastle fans are saying that they're annoyed about moving him on loan and he can also play LM so could be potentially cover for those wide attacking roles. So maybe less underwhelming signing than people think.
I think what annoys me is we are developing their player for them. I'm fine with loans, with an option to buy. But he's just signed an extension so all we're doing is helping them in the long run. I've no idea about his ability, so trust Uffie on it, but I am not a fan of this type of signing.
The Jets are probably paying 100% of his wages. So we essentially pick up a young LB/RB cover for free, to provide a bit of squad depth.
The motivation for this signing will be to at worst provide some depth, while freeing up salary cap for bigger signings. At best, he proves to be a quality starting FB at 0 cost.
It's a pretty average signing, but financially it makes sense.
He is a current Australia U23 isn’t he? Do we have a Kiwi U23 that isn't either playing overseas or in the Nix? I’d be happy for an Aussie U23 signing every day of the week. Agree the announcement is underwhelming.carlind
You can’t tell me there isn’t a New Zealander playing locally that wouldn’t at least be as good. Even if they’d have been given a trial, there’d probably be told nah while some Bozinovski II gets signed sight unseen. There’s literally only one pro team for an entire country there shouldn’t be any need to sign any Australians, let alone loan players.

I think as well if he comes in provides depth and has solid performances and we have a successful year maybe win something and he's played his part in that then we can't be too unhappy with him going back to the Jets.

I very much doubt that Jets are paying his all of his wages.
Re a Fenton replacement, who knows. Who predicted this kid Mauragis signing. Kelvin Kalua has been one name mentioned. Hay certainly thinks he's deserving of the ALM. Noel Billingsley has become a mystery man, but apparently is back from the US in Welly?
However maybe the Nix will plug for specialist CB cover, if they see Payne now primarily as a RB. Be interesting to see if any Trialists get spotted next week
Noah in back in Wellington. Played a game for Karori but looks to be injured. Had a terrible run of it.

I don't see how that would work in a salary capped league.

I think its a bit strange tbh - would be alright if he was a starting player that could have real impact, but surely Sutton is locked in ahead of him. So he is a squad player - would it not be worth while to pick someone else up that we might on-sell for a profit or atleast keep for a few years? Seems like left back is a pretty adaptable position as we have had Cacace (was a centre back, correct me if im wrong) and Sutton (was a midfielder, again correct me if im wrong) both shine under Uffie, surely another young fella from lower aussie leagues, nz league or the academy could've spent a year getting to grips with pro football. Unless there is some master plan to try pull a quick one on Newcastle if he does work out, then I fail to see what the point of this transfer is - are we Newcastles feeder club now?
Imagine if Wolves lost 3 squad role level players on a free to Burnley and in return loaned in a Burnley youngster who is unlikely to start behind their current players.
Bizzaro move in my mind, but alas - Uffie has never done me wrong, so I will trust the process.

Actually, this tends to be the norm. Professional football clubs are very willing to loan out young prospects for free, with the view of developing them at other clubs. With these deals, my prior would be that the Jets will be footing the wage bill. Albeit, he's probably not on more than 70-80k or so (an educated guess).

Come on we lost 3 players whose contracts had expired and either them or the coach felt whatever offer was made wasnt what they wanted so they moved on. Im glad we didnt pay overs to keep them or is that what people would have preferred pay overs for them so the money isnt there for that those hoped for imports. Seems whatever way he played it Talay cant do what some would like.

Remember though that the Jets have no owner and are currently funded by other teams (including, it was rumored, the Phoenix).
Rojas seems to be off Colo Colo so we can cross that off our list
I'm a little surprised that he's thought to be good enough for Colo Colo. Still, having visited on a few ocassions I can state that Santiago is a very civilised city. Nowhere near as excitinig as Buenos Aires mind, but then that's only a 2 hour plane trip away!

I think the level of the Chilean League is similar to the A-League so he'd definitely won't be out of his depth there. He'll have to compete for his spot in the Colo Colo team for sure though.
I see Carl Jenkinson is a free agent after finishing his loan at Melbourne City and his contract at Nottingham Forrest expiring.
Could be a top signing for the Nix at RB, shift Payne central with Wootton and then use the remaining import spots on a striker (Lasogga??) and an AM.
Could then have a front four of Import AM - Import ST - Ball - Kosta with Ugar and Lewis behind. All hinges on if we can get a good local GK if Sail leaves I suppose, otherwise your three remaining import spots probably have to go on a Striker, AM and GK.
Pretty quiet on the tangible rumours front. Anyone got anything substantial? Wusty, can you reach out to Lasogga and see what his thoughts are about joining the Nix?
Believe that Joey Champness is being shopped around to various European clubs by his agent at present. He is a free agent having left Turkish club Giresunspor.
