Sounds like Dura has vouched for him so that's who to blame if it all goes pear-shaped. To be honest though, you'd think that if Dura thought he'd be a negative influence on the team he wouldn't have backed the signing. I think he'll be right. In Dura we trust

Thats actually a fair point and you have swayed me slightly.

There was talk (and we will never know if it was true) that the reason Chris James was not at the Phoenix was cause a couple of the team/AWs said to Ernie that he was a bit full of himself or something like that so they never touched him. If Dura has said he is ok then I guess I have to go with it when you consider he may have gone the other way with James (speculation)

Never thought these guys were cocks. Vuko is a competitive and very, very good keeper. Reddy is bonkers, but had an awesome stint here. As far as I know they've never lined anyone up off the ball in a particularly nasty way, and they've put together a really good record in this league.

Except Reddy has, on numerous occassions, proven himself to be a complete cock at other clubs.

So huge chance that Griffiths could "prove himself" while he is with the Nix.

On the topic of this thread, Ifill must rank alongside Steve Price as the best sporting import to come to NZ. Performance on the field coupled with making a massive impression in the community. An absolute privilege to watch Ifill operate for the Nix

I agree with Steelo. Having had the pleasure of meeting Steve Price, I believe he is a true legend. Took the time to talk to two of us massage therapists when his purpose was giving the Nix a pre-game pep talk before the Galaxy game (I think it was). NZ became his second home.

Ifill is the same - always generous with his time, a legend of his sport and an adopted national.

disagree. Having a drinking problem doesn't make you a cock of the J Burns etc etc variety...

I recall him assaulting someone at a club [football] in the early 2000s when I was living in Aussie. Memory a bit hazy but i think it was his football coach. for some reason northern beaches of Sydney rings bells. Did he play for the Northern Spirit or something?

Problems at Parramatta This is soemthing when he was 21 years old, thing he was also suspended at the Roar for assualting someone on the pitch too. Just pointing out that you can't always blame it on the drink. Who knows Joel might have a drinking problem too?

Paul is ranked only 30th in "The Top 100 All-Time Greatest A-League Players" Four Four Two Australia magazine August 2017

(The list includes foreign imports such as Del Piero and Yorke)

The magazine has a good bio of each player with a photo.

I'd have Paul much higher, maybe in ninth ahead of Rojas who they have at ninth.

To me he was one of the best A-League players in the years when he was playing and one of the most effective imports ever.

Phoenix players past and present featuring:

4. Shane Smeltz

6. Carlos Hernandez

9. Marco Rojas

16. Joel Griffiths

20. Danny Vukovic

30. Paul Ifill

39. Fred

44. Nathan Burns

48. Jade North

56. Andrew Durante

62. Michael McGlinchey

67. Gui Finkler

70. Kosta Barbarouses

So, thirteen Phoenix players - 13% of the Top 100

Good on him for talking about it now. Amazing to think he still had that going on when he was playing here.

Also if he only quit 6 years ago, which would be just after he was forced to retire, then I wonder how much of a nest egg he had to build his post football career.

That gambling style sounds like one I heard about the Exponents! Rapid fire on whatever is in the vicinity.

Playing top level footy must be such a rush, that anything else is a bit drab by comparison. They train intensely for a few hours each day and then just have so much time to fill.

Yeah plenty of footballers got gambling issues. Gillespie a high profile one. Paul Merson.  Zeljko 'Spider' Kalac in our part of the world, had to declare bankrupt. Plenty of others I'm sure. It's a disease. Hate how Aussie commercial TV is riddled with gambling adverts & promotions.
