Qatar without Abdurisag upset Mexico 1-0 in California. Qatar edge Honduras (2-1 winners over Haiti) on GD to grab 2nd in their pool, and through to the Gold Cup quarters. They will likely play Panama in their QF.

Maybe the Mexicans played a B team, as already through as top in their Pool.

The embodiment of 'It's about what you do with the possession you have.'

Still, was hoping Mexico would mash them!

Happy days, Qatar bumped out of the Gold Cup quarters 4-0 by Panama.

Qatar were outshot 17 to 4 by Panama, outshot 25 to 1 against Mexico (but somehow won 1-0), outshot 17 to 5 by Honduras and outshot slightly closer 15 to 10 against Haiti. All up 74 shots against to 20 for. Possession-wise they had 38% versus Panama, only 23% vs Mexico, 35% vs Honduras and (again best) 50% vs Haiti.

It does take a bit of gloss off that first half All Whites performance though, seeing them get bossed to a greater extent by teams like Honduras and Panama. Not bad teams, but a fair step off the three North American sides. Bazeley maybe sighing in relief that pen is already on paper.

They don't really look to be of the level of the top eight CONCACAF sides that make the final round of World Cup qualifying, more so the level of 10-15th maybe. Home-town bullies maybe? Their Asian Cup win was in nearby UAE, but their away World Cup-buildup friendlies paired with a UEFA qualifying group were fairly poor.

Worth noting that Qatar scored first in each of their group stage matches. They are also managed by the famously negative manager Carlos Quieroz. Once they had a lead they tried to kill the match off with negative tactics, time wasting, fake injuries and just kicking the opposition if all else failed.

The other side of that coin was that they amassed so many yellow cards in the group phase that they had six players suspended for the quarter-final. That certainly made life easier for Panama, but I also think Panama is a much better side than this version of Qatar. After taking a lead, I was worried Panama was becoming guilty of playing with their food, but after Qatar showed a few signs of life, Panama's Diaz scored three times in 10 minutes and Panama coasted the rest of the way into the semis.

This is a Panama side that is in good form, but they were missing their best player as well. A lot of the other CONCACAF sides are not looking very good at the moment (Honduras is a mess, they fired their manager less than a year after hiring him, it's embarrassing that Qatar tried to cling to 1-0 for 83 minutes and failing against them, instead of just beating them 2-0 or 3-0 which definitely felt like it was in the cards), but from the start of the tournament it has felt like Panama or Jamaica have a shot at breaking the Mexico-US stranglehold on the tournament.

I think the Qatar Airways sponsorship is over now, so hopefully we never see Qatar (or any other invited team - no offence) at the Gold Cup again.

Juneof86 any news floating around what happened post the Qatar & Honduras game, where the Qatari Yusuf Abdurisag got sent off post the final whistle? Sent off aong with one of the Honduran (black) players. Honduras did equalise (1-1) with basically the last kick of the game, so that alone may have been enough for things to boilover.

But just interesting from our viewpoint as Abdurisag is the Qatar player accused of a racist comment, when NZ's match against Qatar was abandoned.

Edit - buena suerte verus the Americans about to kick off.

FYI - in Cinnccinati USA beat Canada 3-2 on pens (1-1 NT & 2-2 after ET), in their big Gold Cup quarter final. Singh's old Jahn Regensburg, team mate Scott Kennedy with Canada's 2nd goal in ET.

Cue some more Herdman criticism no doubt.

Coochiee> I actually watched Honduras v Qatar and I didn’t have the first clue what happened. As you say, Alberth Elis scored with the last kick of the match. It was an awkward, acrobatic effort and he broke his arm on the landing after the goal. So you have an equalizer at the death, an injury to Honduras’ best player and then the final whistle. There was a lot going on and as soon as the match ended both teams got in each other’s faces… this happens constantly in CONCACAF. I didn’t see too much in it, but I did note afterwards that it was Abdurisag that was sent off. Rubilio Castillo, the Honduran that was sent off with him, went on Instagram and apologized for being sent off and letting the team down (losing him and Elis was a big blow to their attack) and he said Abdurisag “recriminated him for the manner in which he celebrated the goal.” From what I saw Castillo kicked the ball back into the net just after it had gone in, otherwise the celebrations were actually pretty subdued because it was immediately clear that Elis was seriously injured.

It hasn’t been a great Gold Cup for Canada, but the lads put up a really good fight last night (and btw, Kennedy’s “goal” was a late own goal that tied it up for the Americans, though not really his fault). Herdman started the first match by using four central defenders, four wingers, one midfielder and one forward. Somehow, we came back to that exact starting XI last night, but it worked much better. Both sides were missing most of their top players and we haven’t had a chance to really experiment with our squad since before the pandemic, so six players earned a first cap and I think we’ve found some more depth, so those are all positives. It would be nice to see players played in their natural positions more often and Herdman seems to always double-down on his questionable choices rather than admitting he maybe got it wrong. A lot of the people who jumped on the bandwagon during the qualifying campaign seem to be calling for his head, but for most of us old timers we’re not overly pleased with this summer, but we understand what this tournament was about and we saw some signs of progress from the kids last night. For me the Copa America next summer is the real test. We’ll have a good sense of where we are for 2026 and if we’re still struggling there’s still time to make a change – not that I think we have the money to change the manager even if we wanted to, but our finances are still a work in progress.

Thanks for that handy summary Juneof86. Oops an oggie for Kennedy my bad.

Sounds like the Gold Cup for Canada & Herdman has been a bit of experimential tourney, with an eye to 2026. Unfortunately the AWs don't really play enough or have the player depth, to really have that luxury.

Be interesting to see what happens with Qatar and Abdurisag (a hot head it seems) - when that FIFA committee finally convenes in September to review what happened in Vienna. I think we can all guess at basically nothing.

Gold Cup. Panama who beat Qatar 4-0 in their QF, and then the US on pens in their semi, lose final 1-0 to Mexico in California. 88th min winner for the Mexicans.

Any update from FIFA on their investigation into the abandoned NZ-Qatar game?

Neatly for FIFA's 'lets sweep it under the carpet policy' the committee who assess such complaints, only meet in FIFA windows apparently. So sometime September.

I noticed a sign in the toilets at the cake tin the other night where FIFA invited people to complain about any racism/homophobia type things. There was a contact provided. Maybe, we fans should all use that channel to complain about the Qatar incident? Showtimenixie - you don’t have to…

Once again if it was bad enough to stop the game, the players should have had the guts to tell the public the words that were said.

To not do so is hypocritical and encourages it to happen tomorrow

No point in telling the words to only the  sweep it under the carpet team.

This was always going to happen.

No, it doesn’t. Everyone knows what was said, and the players don’t have to repeat it in public for anyone’s titillation. Which is exactly what it is for most of those who wish to see the word.

Having a bunch of powerful interests who don’t wish to be embarrassed means yes, it was never likely to lead widespread change or sanction.

But calling it out and bringing attention to it caused headlines and brought awareness. It is making people think about their behavior that will make change.

Piss off with your ‘have guts’ and ‘hypocritical’ from an anonymous account, rather than on the field against one of the most powerful nations in world football. They made a call in the moment. Most of us have had the guts to back our players.

On Friday, Boxall did not reveal exactly what was said to him. He said the comment wasn't specifically a racial slur about his Samoan heritage, but called it unacceptable.

"It's one of those things, I'm pretty competitive and I say a lot of things that I wouldn't want my kids to hear, but that's certainly crossing the line," he said. "It's not something I'd ever say."

"I didn't really take great offense to it, but I think it's one of those things you can't allow on a football field," he added. "I'm sure it's a slur he uses colloquially every day, but when it's directed at another player on the field, you can't get away with that. It's not something I take personally. … I'm proud of my teammates for taking the stand they did."

I think all this discussion has been had, but you should have been able to and you should be able to read between the lines. I think you’re way out of line to attack the players.

I’m just hoping Bell’s absence is entirely to do with his new team. The AWs need his leadership back again, as we’re not flush with senior players.

Yep simplest explanation that he’s settling back into Viking after a tough time in Denmark. Most likely to be right.

I just hope through the process above he’s had any and all support from NZF he might have needed as the dude with the armband on the day.

Has there been any sort of whispering that there wasn't an appropriate level of support? The NZF boss and Bazeley said all the right things and there was no sort of public dissent outside of typical forum chatter from anonymous nobody fans.

That Iran Qatar game was a joke from VAR. Absolutely shocking calls against both teams. The bloke who pulled the racist comment scored the winner I think.

The Qatar team only seems to have one actual Qatari in it.

Fingers cross Jordan wins the final 🤞

Yusuf Abdurisag got 63 mins for Qatar, and no didn't score. But they can all look a bit the same, right.
