Last month the CEO said the name had "strong football heritage" or something along those lines. If that's true hard to see it being Black Knights, unless somethings changed since then
Those Kiwi names mentioned are a good start. Always interesting to see who makes it in the A league. Brimmer, with all due respect to Steve Buscemi, seems kind of funny looking.
I cannot seriously believe that they are literally destroying themselves by going with that name
There's a comment on the AKL fans facebook page by the admin saying the name is not Black Knights. Will be interesting to see what happens out of that then, likely Auckland FC or something similar.
Nothing wrong with just "Auckland FC".
Auckland City own that name.
Ivan Vuksich and his business partner own that name, so it's ACFC-linked but not owned. I'm sure Bill Foley could make it worth their while.
I can't believe I didn't realise until now that "Black Knights" would evoke that Monty Python character who just gets chopped up into little bits
I'm not a trademark or copyright lawyer but it seems unlikely that one can own "Auckland FC" - even more so when they aren't actively using it (evidenced by the fact that Vuksich owns it but it's not linked to ACFC).
But I'm sure there's so actual lawyers here that can weigh in on that.
My biggest concern with a heritage name is that we get something like "Inter Auckland" or "Real Auckland"
I'm pretty apathetic to names but one of those two could quite possibly be a deal breaker for me...
neither of Inter or Real have any historical significance to auckland or NZ Football, so I'd doubt they'll surface, maybe just maybe we'll see some Maori in the name or like the nix on the logo?

What significance do they have to Miami or Salt Lake?
Pretty sure the decided name entails some sort of footballing heritage not Maori heritage. Plus the "global" aspect - so could be something as unlikely as Auckland Arsenal. Haha.

none that I'm aware of but they arent owned by Foley so not really the same.
Of course being American, Foley might think Auckland Cosmos would carry some kind of footballing heritage, plus definite global reach. Just thinking out loud here... Edit: Auckland City Cosmos

Out of curosity did a Wiki search on each. Not much info on why Beckham choose 'Inter' for Miami, but this below about 'Real' Salt Lake. Interesting that was initially mixed reactions from Utah football (soccer) fans on the Real naming, but then they mostly came around to the idea. I think 2nd Best could be onto something with AFC Auckland and a Black Knights crest.
Name The Spanish title Real (Spanish pronunciation: [reˈal]), meaning "royal" in English, has been used since the early 20th century by Spanish soccer clubs who have received royal patronage from a reigning monarch — most notably Madrid, Zaragoza, Betis and Sociedad. In choosing the name Real for the Salt Lake-based team, initial owner Dave Checketts intended to create a brand name that would become well-known for its simplicity, followed the European-style naming conventions of the league, and would potentially foster a partnership with Real Madrid — admired both because of their successful soccer history and close association with basketball (similar to Checketts' own history with Utah's Jazz NBA team).
Local reaction to the new team's name was initially met with mixed feelings, with the name being accused of contrivance.[6][7] Other suggested team names, such as "Highlanders", "Latter Day Saint FC", "Salt Lake SC", or "Union SLC", were initially preferred for the club by locals. However, by at least 2014, reaction to the name had drastically improved, with the team establishing an identity representative of the Salt Lake community.
I really don't want the team to be called the Black Knights. I'm in that age category where I remember the dire performances of the Kings and Knights all too well.
But the reason this Auckland team is going to succeed is the huge influx of football supporting foreigners and the huge boom of youngsters who follow world football like EPL/Ronaldo/Messi, and those same fans won't know/remember the Knights so won't care either way.
And the ones like me who don't like the name, will come around to it after a while like the Real Salt Lake fans did.
That survey that went round a few months ago had a question as to wether "Black Knights" was suitable for the womens team as well as the mens. Wouldn't surprise if Knights was off the table.
I don't get the whole Black Knights thing. What affiliation does Auckland have to the colour black? And the connection to knights? It's a plain stupid idea. It's not even a traditional football specific name. Maybe for an ice hockey team but not football in 2024

Just possibly if you had $20mill to buy a new football franchise you'd probably choose to name it the way you liked. Basically Foley's got carte blanche to call the club whatever name he wants.
Ps My first "club", at Ngaio School a few years ago, was called The Lazy Loafers Club. It was a great success. Well, I thought so.

it's the name of the sports teams at Westpoint where Foley trained while in the army.

If I had 20 million I'd get my market research right, what connections there are locally, look around the world and see what's worked and what hasn't. I certainly wouldn't pick a name that only meant something to me.
Let's hope they get it right. Don't think the league can take too many more failures - and "knights" already featured in one of those.
Depends who your audience is when you do the research. It would be a very small minority of actual football fans that would support the name 'Black Knights,' but what if actual football fans weren't his target? Not a completely new narrative in this league.

I'd say you'd have yes very few supporting the name, a large chunk that just wouldn't care much or be plain indifferent, and then a mostly older element who remember the failed Knights that would strongly dislike the moniker.
I don't think they will be called the Black Knights (for a few different reasons), but as 2nd Best suggested BK may appear somewhere on the kit as a badge or whatever. At the end of the day Foley yes is the guy fronting up with all the moolah. His team to a point.

What connection does Melbourne have to Victory?
None this year - but previously it was a play on the state name 'victoria' or so I believe.

Will try make the tongue-in-cheek dig more obvious next time
