There's no point playing a zero-sum game against someone with nothing to lose from the situation.

In this case there's nothing to gain from shunning the media, based upon a perception they've done few favours to NZ Football in the past.

No need for player interviews, if it's a real problem, but access to training and some of the staff would be good.

In saying all this, I read in articles recently that were interviews with players (Scott, Nelsen, Sigmund) so they're obviously not completely off limits!

i think it is reasonable for a coach to decide that it is not what he wants for his players as part of their preparation for such an important game

having said that NZF would be then expected to explain this and provide other tour party options for the media to interview

the job of the players is to win this play-off

the job of NZF (in my view) is to promote the sport but not at the expense of missing out on SA

Tigers, those comments suggest that doing media interviews (or not doing them) 3-5 days out from the game will have a significant impact on whether the All Whites win and/or play well on Sunday.

Do you really believe that?

I don't know enough about sports' psychology to say for sure one way or another but i do think for those players who aren't used to this level of media attention and/or the pressures of a match of this importance - it could easily be a distraction

i guess that nzf have thought through the issues (naive, i know, but it's far enough away from the xmas hols for them to be focused )

more importantly, if Ricki believes that (rightly or wrongly) he has my support in his current decision

i agree that better pre-match coverage would help viewership for away leg and possibly attendence on 14/11 (though the result from leg 1 might be the bigger factor)

it is possibly a bit of a catch -22 situation - i.e the players aren't used to intense media so let's shield them, which in turn means the media 'lose interest', which compounds the lack of player experience in responding to the media

but to summarise a 1% increase in our chances of winning is worth the loss of 50% of media air-time prior to this match i reckon (numbers obviously plucked out of thin air)

I reckon the less that we/Bahrain know the better.

for us it adds to the excitement, the whole mystery behind formation and lineup makes me even more excited.

for Bahrain they will be bewildered as to what we are upto, and have really no idea what/who to expect come leg 1.

after Manama I'd expect that we will be going crazy media wise, to entice the public to get behind us. even the likes of $5 B&W scarfs for supporters.

Bring it on Bahrain!!!!It's Business Time!!!!

Yes.
SS1 programming commences at 4:15am.

Replayed on SS2 at 9:30am and 9pm.

ESPN have the Italy-Ireland QC Qualifer live at 2am.

And SS3 has the U20 WC QFs live at 3:15am and 6:45am.

Any idea if the game will be in HD?

Not in HD according to the on-line Sky Guide. At least there's no HD suffix, like there is for some programmes.

The AWs are oplaying a zero sum game against Bahrain.  Rightly or wrongly that's the one that they are focussing on

Good job, there were heaps of Kiwis supporting the Ockers before and during WC 2006. Was at the Sports Cafe in Welly for the playoff game vs Uruguay and the place went mental when Aloisi scored the winning pen. Nice to hear we've got you aussies on our side :)

Mostly so there is a possibility of beating you in front of the rest of the world...

New Zealand football gets into the World Cup and it will be huge for soccer in New Zealand, including the Wellington Phoneix. Which inturn helps Australian football...

A World Cup entrance for New Zealand could be the stimulus for a second Kiwi A-League side into the future...

. Meh, don't worry. Its not that far away now. And its not like I'm going to be running round sweating much in the next few days (apart from when Elliott smacks it into the top corner to given us a 1-0 win!)

Steve Sumner was extremely positive about our chances on radio sport last hour. Good to see.

Seems the media blackout has ended, Miles and Tony Smith had one on ones with the boys this morning. Ricki told Miles than Killy, Smeltzy and Rory will play. Telfer giving us good props but refusing to believe Steve Sumner over his son when Sumner told him 0-0 would not be the ideal non-win result that a scored draw would be. Bles Telf but good on him for speaking the truth, biggest sporting event in NZ this year.

Getting very very nervous.

Go Radio Sport, right into it. Cant believe that they would be playing 3 strikers. Just never expected that at all.

All Aboard the Phoenix/ All Whites Bandwagon!!

Yeah- neither! Thought it'd be generally defensive and hope for a set-piece/counter attack goal.

Crickey - Ricki is always reasonably conservative (and defensive minded). He's breaking with that to play 3 strikers. Major game to be experimenting with....

Isn't this the time to be parking the bus up? I'd rather a 1-1 draw (as any AW supporter would) rather than lose 3-5. I'm getting nervous...

And then win 2-0 at home.  No worries.

Wow, the YF front page is full of stories that weren't there yesterday...unprecedented.  Props to the Guardian for calling out the Bahrani media's overeaction to NZ comments.  Wish it was Saturday already!!

Fairfax and the Herald, and Radio Sport are going great guns with coverage.

Pity TV has been rubbish. Again, almost nothing last night on the news. Lazy and cheap (no camera crew in Bahrain).

It's okay though.  They have coverage of 'netball max' in Manchester on TVNZ and TV3 have... well... just what do TV3 have without Gourdie ?

Telfer again correctly made the point that if this was an Americas Cup regatta in Dubai then Tasker would be there. TV3 would have sent someone aswell.

But massive props to Fairfax and Radio Sport, don't think the Herald have anyone there but seems like a lot of their lifout today must have been about the AWs. Guess it helps there isn't a hell of a lot of high profile stuff on at the moment either.

i reckon itl be 4 - 3 - 3 with locHhead slot back to defence but yea but that shows that we do have quite a bit of depth that a class player like mcglinchy cant make the starting 11

Sure hope this is just a rumour(playing 3 strikers) coz if they do it goes under the heading of SUICIDE....FFS this is an away leg in a WC qualifier. It is not a "lets go out there with all guns blazing" charity game.

I think this is all a smokescreen, that and the 5 across the back. Its just the usual sort of keep them guessing type of stuff that happens before the game.

One thing that I hope happens is that the NZ managers keep cool heads during the game. WE want Ricki and co to be calm and rational throughout the match. That means making the right subs at the right time and calling tactical changes when needed.

My call for the team selection would be 451. Siggy at right back, Browny and Elliot CM, bertos and mcCinchly wide mid.

To me the squad looks a litttle unbalanced...too many strikers and not enough midfield cover. If Elliot or brown get injured then Barron comes in.....but then who is left on the bench? A tough game like this you may need fresh legs in midfield later in the game.....you will only need more strikers if you are 3 goals down

Agreed. I wonder if the writer of that article knows there can only be 10 outfield players on the pitch at a time?
