you could turn that into a 5 3 2 in effect - but you're really asking smeltz to play a completely different role (you should play mcglinchey if lining up like that).

                                 Paston

           Sigmund           Nelsen         Vicelich
Bertos                                                        Lochhead

                      Elliot                 Brown
                               Smeltz

                        Killen              Fallon
In that formation, you're also asking Bertos to play a completely different role to what he does at the Phoenix.

I was thinking that this might end up happening too. But I dont like it. I really think we should have McGlinchey there if we can, otherwise our midfield is going to get walked through

Brown has to play or we'll get raped in the middle of the park.

Agree with all that El Grap has said. We need Brown and Elliott has to play CM.

In my opinion we should really just stick to 442 with BErtos, Brown, Elliot and McGlinchey with Smeltz and Killen up front and bring Fallon on in the 2nd half.

I'll have this thanks:

                  Paston
Scott-Sigmund-Nelsen-Lochead
Bertos-Brown-Elliott-Mcglinchey
             Killen-Smeltz

But he's a central midfielder first and foremost, and is also OUR best central midfielder by a long margin.

And then you would play him in an unfamiliar position (which he has no physical attributes for anyway) because he played a completely different position for Fulham once upon a time? Really?
He would be a safer bet then Bertos. Has defensive skills that Bertos lacks (or has none of) and that is the most important attribute for a defender. Of course I agree, he should only be at CM. But we shouldn't be playing any WBs anyway, it is just complete stupidity.

in that case you can't have both!!! unless we play 4 in the middle because bertos will be RM

This is the team we should play, perhaps Sigmund at RB and Vicelich at CB it just depends on how well Ricki thinks Scott is playing.

Elliott = Centre midfield. End of.
He played LM for Fulham...
No he didnt

he may played their for Olympic in 1994 but he has played in the middle of the park for 15 years and that is what he does well.

Completely agree - that was the hardest decision when picking my preferred lineup

I think that would definitely have been the team two weeks ago, maybe with bertos and mcglinchey swapping sides. The presence of Fallon and his goals and form for Plymouth are making things tricky for Herbert

i wouldnt mind if fallon was in instead of killen. easy with either of those two

It would appear there are eight set-in-stone starters...

Paston, Nelsen, Sigmund, Lochhead, Brown, Elliott, Bertos and Smeltz.

It looks to be a head-to-head battle between Killen and Fallon (notwithstanding the rumour today about both starting) for the second striker's role.

That leaves Scott, McGlinchey and Vicelich fighting over two spots, the makeup of which is totally dependent on formation.

If we took out Brown for a more attacking option it would be stupid we would be taking out an expiereinced player. We would get smashed up the middle and hes also quite aggressive and that could be something that we do have over Bahrain. Your going to play someone who has had a half in international football over a player who has had played 21 games. Sorry to get angry but you Brown haters need to back off

Plus Brown does do a lot of box to box action

i feel we simply must play both brown and elliott in the middle, it's a no brainer. The defence will be so much stronger for it, and you know those two will give it the guts all day through the middle.

i think most people agree Brown should get the nod but he better play better than he did at the Confed. He was poor there and it put us under a lot of pressure.

Hell yes they provide a massive work load and box to box attack and defence so you are basicly playin 6 at the back and 4  up front

if we play both it'll be

  Bertos  Brown  Elliott

I have no problem with that and since the confed cup I have had to take back a lot of what I said about Brown because he has played very well after the first 2 games of the season for the Nix.

I seriously think it will be 5-3-2 come sunday morning.

unlucky for McGlinchey if this happens because he is awesome.

He is a class player but this is great for nz football the fact that we have to leave class players out like McGlinchey and Fallon (maybe) least we are showing a bit of depth

The TAB, I think, is paying $7 for an AW win. But, surfing the net the international agencies have odds around 9/2, 11/2, 5/1, $5.50. $7 looks like a very good flutter.
