Can't people accpet that the MINNOWS New Zealand, yes a rugby country, New Zealand got a 0-0 draw against the football mad Bahrain? Do people not know how hard it is to travel to a hostile country and get something out of it.

I don't think people realise that we dodged a bullet with the post + Pastons brilliance (cue WPF)
and now we are 90mins from the WC.

Fantastic result and I wish I didn't have exams during November otherwise i'd be up there.

+1

These 'fans' should have their own forum/thread where they can whinge and moan all they want.

Then I might actually be able to enjoy some well informed discussion about this game and the upcoming one in a months time.

Three for me, and two for them.

Is right.

Ah, good morning everybody! It was a well fought draw, and I am pleased with the result. Plenty of heart. Nelsen was boss and Siggy too (what about THAT block!). Plenty to build on and we're one game away from reaching the World Cup! f**k the negativity- we're so close!

Oh yeah its a great result for new zealand, I dunno its just 270 minutes with out a goal is maybe taking its toll on me. but cmon that crowd was hardly hostile. I thought there were all white fans scattered everywere until I realsied it was those white national dress things.

Am very pleased about this result!

I don't agree with you often but i'm 100% with you on that one. Great result.

Thought that little Mac was terrific when he came on and he has to start in the next leg.

Fallon won everything in the air and I think Ricki has to be commended for having the balls to play 3 strikers. They are 3 of our best players and having all of them on the park helped. I thought that Smeltz was a bit anonymous but that was probably due to him having to fall back a lot and help defend.

Would like to see Leo a bit further forward in the home leg.

Siggy and Nelsen were outstanding. Siggy stepped up about 5 levels having Ryan alongside him - just brilliant. Goal saving tackles, runs up the sideline - even had a shot..though i'd rather it fell to Smeltz! Was great to see.

Even Paston stepped up a bit I thought. Flapped once or twice and should've commanded his area better but made a couple of absolutely crucial saves.

I agree with people that mcglinchey should be bought in for the second leg - but not at the expense of elliott or brown. For me mcglinchey would have to slot in on the left - we dont have a true left winger in a 4-4-2 anyway (unless bertos moves there, but i prefer him on the right), and mcglinchey can drift centre in behind 2 strikers on occasion. Even having fallon playing out left (like he did a lot this morn) with mcglinchey in behind smeltz would be alright.

For me, if we move to a 4-4-2 i want both elliot and brown in front of the defence to keep it tight. Then nab a goal or two and we'll be sorted. If we play it right we can get two clean sheets in this tie.

A 4-4-2 with only one holding mid will be the death of us in my opinion. We need to win the midfield scrap in the second leg. People are bagging elliott and brown unfairly for last night's performance - don't forget we were essentially playing a 5-2-3. They were on a hiding to nothing in that midfield and i was proud of their effort.

I was proud of the entire team's effort, the result is outstanding in my opinion.

Now lets come home and f*ck them up

Agree entirely. Everybody worked their socks off. Bertos, who (perhaps obviously) wasn't great, at least held his (unfamiliar) position well enough and worked so hard.

At the start when the players walked out on to the park were they clapping at the fans?

Its a shame that there weren't any shots of them.

Good result - keeps us alive and should spark up interest for the game here.

All boiling down to 90/120 mins of football now. Being at home should be an advantage to us, but their goals will now become much more valuable. It's gonna be one hell of a ride.

NZ just got a good result against a team rightly rated much better, who have been here before and remain alive with a very good chance of qualifying for the world cup.

I'm English and didn't switch over to England's dead rubber (I did record it for watching afterwards).

I can't understand the negativity I'm seeing as I catch up with this thread. The only thing that could have made the result better would have been nicking an away goal. The World Cup dream is very much alive. Unless you're Bahrainian, be happy that NZ exceeded expectations and the form book.

I'm happy with a draw.  Ricki clearly was as well.  A 1-1 draw would have been so much better, but we'll work with what we have.  Our defence did well but they were a shambles for large parts of the game.  Summed it up really when Nelsen(?) attempted to boot the ball out and it kind of spun in the air and went nowhere.  I think we need four defenders for this next match, and Brown needs to be less anonymous.

I hate it when opposition players go down left, right, and centre.  Really is pathetic.

Hope we can really deal it to them in Wellington.

cool photo just before the bahrain shot onto the post- makes you realise how lucky we were for that one.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ibojamri/3998508861/

Cruel to show this photo, (and that bloody chequered flag should have been in the air!) coz Paston made a couple of saves that really kept us into it. I thought the one low to his right was particularly good- I think it went through Nelsens legs, and must have been hard to see.

Bring on the return leg!

Now that ihave had a few hours to reflect on this result I am stunned......we are 90 minutes away from the WORLD CUP FINAL. Do you realise how big that is....90minutes away from a WORLD CUP FINAL!!!!!!!

0-0 away means we are in the driving seat. Home advantage, home conditions, home weather
The atmosphere at the ROF will be amazing. 8pm kick off in November....hope its a cold windy Wellington night, quite possible. Thats Toast Martinborough weekend.....and I remember visiting Martinborough at that timeof year and its been nearly a blizzard.

You could see how frustrated the bahrains were as the match went on. They were under huge pressure. They will be under huge pressure at the ROF as well. A big local crowd.....YF in full voice....can't wait.

As for whoooooooo....you must live a miserable life. If you can't get excited about this then you are technically dead!!!! We might have to wait another 20 or 30 years to get this close again...enjoy the ride.
