Yeah, the bench acknowledged us when they came out.
A lot of expats among our crowd, and the majority tended to support more passively( i.e.rugby crowd). But the hard core got a few chants going, and nudged the rest into action.

Great acknowlegement of the fans by the players and support staff after the final whistle. Ryan threw his captain's armband into the Kiwi fans area.

Miles Davis's tour group brought along a 16m x 8m NZ flag (weighing 30kg apparently). Took up a whole bay of seats.

did you all turn into screaming teenage girls? .

oh it must've been epic. did it seem like there was 30,000 supporters there? didn't seem that many on tv and that music would've given me the sh*ts!!!

Not quite, Smitty.

The Bahraini support was very well co-ordinated - leaders had cellphones donated by Batelco to organise their troops. When we got a chant going we had maybe 15 secs max before it got drowned out. But the players could hear us - check out the NZ Football site where Ryan Nelsen acknowledges the support.

Stadium was close to 90% full, not a sell out (Sell out probably the wrong word as the tickets were free for locals). Capacity 35,000 so 30,000 supporters is fairly near the mark. They made 10 times the noise of a Kiwi rugby crowd.

10 times zero is still zero,so perhaps this is hard to measure like that

Good result away but we look very ordinary. The winner of this tie will definately be the worst team at the World Cup. Will be great to get there and all that, but we still look like we'll get absolutly thumped if we make it.

Well obviously. Getting there would be amazing though. Id travel to it to watch us get thumped for sure

Same thing happened in '82. Brazil took us apart. But we did well against Scotland.

Somebody has to be the wooden spooners or the also rans but if it's us that's quite OK. As long as the team tries it's best, the exposure will do the players and NZ football in general good.

And of course Mr van Hattum will be all too aware of the need to capitalise on the WC showing as was not done after '82.

Better to get there and get beat than never get there at all. Otherwise, why even enter?

The commentators this morning reckoned that qualification would bring in US$5m+ for NZF. Is that right? I've never read-up on the prize money... could make a huge difference to the NZF if they manage the inflow properly. Perhaps fund the move into the AFC

I read somewhere that the players get about half of the moolah and the other half goes to NZF.

Not worried about managing the inflow, but would hope they direct the outflow!

I was very drunk in Spain at the game but the All Whites lost 5 - 2! Is that doing well?

I've said I thought we were average yesterday, but I'm looking forward to Bahrain getting what's coming to them at the ROF next month.

At the end of the day (IMO) it doesn't matter about what happens when the All Whites get to SA. We're never gonna win the thing. For New Zealand, it's all about getting there. A lot of "bigger" footballing nations won't be there  (I'm Scottish, and writing this through the tears), so let's just go there with realistic expectations, enjoy every minute of it and hopefully capitalise on the exposure that the game will get from it.

Go the AW's

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Good result - keeps us alive and should spark up interest for the game here.

All boiling down to 90/120 mins of football now. Being at home should be an advantage to us, but their goals will now become much more valuable. It's gonna be one hell of a ride.

You're predicting another 0-0 then?

Our only two goals scored in the WC - that's doing well.    You must have been drunk because I recall that we were very competitive for a while.  Whereas with brazil we were pretty much on the back foot for most of the game (as i recall).

We toyed with you, Scotland were just continuing our age old tradition of not playing that well against less-fancied teams, and the two goals were shocking defensive f**K-ups!!

Was watching the Fox Sports feed off TVU off the interweb - I could hear you Kiwi supporters in the second half every time we made a good tackle, or a good pass up the field. Great to hear amid all the other din!

Hi can anyone point me in the direction of a highlight video for the missed "open goal" chance for Bahrain?

I found a Youtube video highlights package (around 1 min long) but that omits the best chance of the game? Too ashamed perhaps?

Do you feel annoyed that Scotland is always up against it to make the world cup when teams like NZ and Aus have a much better shot? Or is that just the way it is, europe is strong and it's just unlucky?

How good is Ivory Coast? Cos they have qualified. Would they be better than us? (Forgive the ignorance)

Yes.

Drogba, Kalou and the Toure brothers for starters.

Probably. Kalou and Drogba? They were well tidy at the last World Cup, I think.

For a guy posting on a forum run for supporters of the 'Nix you sure are one mixed up muppett. For the sake of everyone could you please find another country to support 'cause I think we can do without you.
In any context 0-0 against Bahrain away from home is a very good result, regardless of how it was acheived, and if it doesn't reach your standards of expectation I am sure you will be much happier gloating on some other forum over the brilliance of yet another Ferdinand f**k up that saw his 'keeper take the rap, 'cause that seems to be the standard you are looking for.
Not seeking for a sh*t fight, just looking for the players to get the recognition (and thanks) they deserve for representing us (that's you and me) so well .

Never really thought about it, to be honest. Doesn't really bother me. It'll be nice to have one team to support in the WC.

SBS has highlights of the AWs game (largely second half) as well as highlights from most the other weekend WC Qualifiers.
Interesting what you notice on replay:
 - looks so much like Salman must have been offside before he rounded Paston and hit the post but impossible to tell bc camera angles were terrible
 - nice play by Smeltz as provider putting McGlinchey in space down the right when he set up Killen's effort
 - great first time throughball by Elliott to put Bertos into space down the right wing before he put in dangerous cross the Bahrainis just cleared for corner in front of the arriving Killen
 - still loving Sigmund's sliding challenge to deny Jaycee John
