Can't think of why he wouldn't play in Brisbane? First name on the team sheet imho.

Given the short turnaround between both games and the players arriving at all different times this week I expect there to be heavy rotation. Here is my predicted lineup for Thursday and Sunday. I think we will go quite light on Thursday then bring the big guns off the bench then full strength come Sunday.

Thursday
                          Sail
Roux Payne Reid Pijnaker Cacace
             Stamenic Howieson
                         Just
                   Waine Wood

Sunday
                           Woud
Ingham Tuiloma Reid Pijanker Cacace
                            Bell
                Stamenic Garbett
                           Just
                          Wood

More thinking along the lines of if his body is all good for 2 games in 4 days. Considering he’s had no club footy.
If he’s sweet then absolutely should start both.

If only 1 of Bell & Stamenic starts on Thursday it's Bell. He's hardly played of late. Stamenic has basically played two full games in 4 days in Denmark (one an UCL game).

See no reason why Sail wouldn't play both games, unless he has a shocker in Brissy. Hopefully Howieson doesn't start in either match.

But yes Reid hasn't played a serious football game in 2 months. Hard to see him getting through 2 full games in 3 days.

I think it's the Socceroos who will be more likely to make sweeping changes between the 2 games & experiment - they have far better depth, and Arnie has stated he wants to give everyone a chance to stake a claim for their WC squad.

The AWs I reckon will very motivated for a rare win over the old foe, and play more a full strength team with few changes over the 2 games. Hay knows a victory over Aussie will look very nice on his CV - and by next Monday he could be jobless.

I know I'm pretty late to this but can someone please tell me why on earth Woud has been selected instead of Marinovic? Marinovic isn't injured and has been getting consistent starts for his club, it just seems really weird that our most experienced goalkeeper has not been selected. Don't hate Woud, just not sure what to think of him after his poor performances in the past.

Woud is probably seen by Hay as the third best keeper, given he traded starting roles with Marinovic prior to the borders allowing Sail to join. He probably would've been there in March/June had he still been at Almere City, but it seems like getting back into Japan was a bit of a nightmare back then, it cost him a pre-season in Japan when he first signed. So back then it was easier to fly Searle/Gould over from England than put Woud through the hassle, especially as he'd only be available in window once Marinovic was also there. Australia had similar experiences with Mitch Langerak who's only now finally back in their squad.

Can only assume Marinovic is in a similar camp to Rojas, in that he's in a relatively new environment, and, while these games have a bit more hype than usual, they are still only friendlies at the end of the day. Had Marinovic been picked I would be surprised if he didn't start one of the games, given Hay hasn't started the same keeper in consecutive friendlies in a window during his tenure.

But given Marinovic is staying at his club, and it seems travel in and out of Japan is easier, Woud has just jumped up from third to second, and Paulsen is there for a combination of being local and young, so you don't fly any of the UK contingent all the way around the world for a couple of training sessions. He's made mistakes, but that's no different to any other keeper; Sail's against Peru was just as egregious as Woud's against Honduras.

I guess the good thing about Woud is that he's still reasonably young along with Searle and they both have plenty of time to become just as good as Sail and Marinovic. Starting one of these matches could give Woud a good chance for him to show he deserves to be in this All Whites team.

Woud also had a howler along the turf against Jordan, back in January. Seems almost a technique type of issue with shots along the ground. Hopefully something he's been working to eradicate in Japan.

But to me Sail should start both these Socceroos games.

It's going to be very interesting to see which goalkeepers will be selected for games after these two friendlies. Marinovic, Sail, Woud, Gould, Searle, Tzanev, Paulsen, so many players to choose from. Even Basalaj could be an option. Guess it will depend on who our coach is.

Possible lineup if the very busy Stamenic starts on the bench?

If Marco is on the bench (he has had a lot of minutes) then you may be correct. I suspect Waine and Old will also get some decent minutes in the first match given they will be fresh and Grieve and Garbett haven’t had many club minutes recently.

I think Reid plays 60 mins max in Brisbane and we move to 4 at the back with a 4-2 (bell and Stamenic), 3 (just, old and mccowatt) and Wood or Waine to finish.

You are smoking crack if you think Baslaj is an option for the AWs. Even Gould shouldn't be one going forward

I was pretty much just mentioning all the All Whites goalkeepers who are still playing or have appeared/been called up in recent times, yes Basalaj is extremely unlikely and was more of a personal choice. Forgot to mention Crocombe but who knows if he'll be considered again.

I agree with all your points there. Apparently Tuiloma and Greive are yet to arrive in camp so swap Tuiloma for Boxall and Greive for Waine and I think that’s our starting XI for Brisbane.

Choose your starting 11 for tomorrow (mostly) from this photo I'd say.

19 faces, 5 guys missing. Bell, Stamenic, Tuiloma, Greive & De Jong.

How has Eli Just not bulked up a bit after years in a pro environment, looks like a kid still.

Only one I don't recognise is the long haired dude doing an early days Brockie impersonation, who by a process of elimination I assume is Kyle Adams? Is he any good? Never seen him play.

Count how many times does "we need more games" or similar comes up in those 13 minutes.

I hope NZF is listening to Woodsy and Hay. We have to keep momentum going and make the most of the generation we have coming through.

Sounds like they are a bit pissed there are no friendlies organised for Nov, pre the WC.

I remember Hudson making similar complaints early in his reign.

But doesn’t it cost like $200k or something to assemble the AWs per window?? Similar with the Ferns?? NZF will have to watch their pennies a bit until hopefully grabbing $15-20M FIFA WC qualification cash in 2026. Acting like a MASH triage

Sails form of late has not been great... made the mistake against Peru and also looked shaky in the cup, especially when playing as a sweeper keeper.

Needs to stop trying to play with his feet and stick to making saves.

his errors haven't been solely his own, there have been one or two defenders involved as well, Marinovic and his defence have been leaking goals galore.
Need to make sure that if Payne is out there he only plays it forward.  His back and side passes of late have been highly suspect.

Same old line has been rolled out for years.  No games 2005 bar the old enemy etc.

You'd think teams in Australia's group/FIFA would have covered the costs for the boys to play some pre WC warm up games in the Middle East/Europe just prior to the WC, especially if both teams play similar this weekend as I expect they will.

Piss poor form from NZF... again.

World Cup teams only have a week from the start of the window of clubs releasing players to the first games, so basically no World Cup teams are having friendlies in November, and then the normal October window has been removed.

The only way a game would be possible is if a team played it only a couple days before their first game, or played it outside of the window. A few teams are doing that, like Qatar is playing Panama, Iran is playing Russia and Tunisia is playing Colombia, but it's likely in-season players wouldn't be all there. It's different to previous years, for example, ahead of 2018 Australia played two friendlies, the first of which was two weeks before the tournament, not to mention that they were already in camp before that too, whereas this time their first training session will probably be a week out.

They could have maybe slipped in a friendly against a non-WC in November, but the vast majority of teams aren't playing then, so most non-WC teams next game will be in March, no different to what NZF has said. It's easy to blame NZF, but I highly doubt they're trying to sabotage their own game.

Some people just stay small, maybe if he makes a move to Germany he'll pile on the muscles though. And yeah long haired bloke is Kyle Adams, he's doing very well for the USL but is yet to establish himself at a higher level. Was signed to Houston Dynamo for a little while but never made an appearance, here's hoping he can eventually establish himself in the MLS.

It would be pretty disappointing if we were unable to beat Australia in any of these friendlies. I generally think we have more players standing out for the national team compared to Australia and a lot of their goals from their past couple of games have come from set-pieces. Won't underestimate them though, it's been a while Socceroos, bring it on!

I have Australia as big favourites to be honest, especially at home, and the odds share that view; Australia at 1.50 vs NZ at 5.50. Australia's form isn't stellar, but they play much stronger opposition. Even still, the All Whites have only managed to win against OFC opposition this year, and have only managed to score one goal (a penalty) in the four non-OFC matches. On paper they are probably stronger too, and they're able to name a 31-man squad and still leave out players that would be nailed-on starters for us, like Rukavytsya, Jeggo, Holland, Kalik etc.
