Following on from Carlind's post in the Eden Park game thread, I'll speculate on an AWs squad as below. Assuming 23 man selection.

No real surprises. *Sutton the only new cap.

Keepers - Marinovic, Sail, Woud
Defenders -  Ingham, Payne, Reid, Tuiloma, Pijnaker, M. Boxall, Cacace, *Sutton
Midfield -  Garbett, Just, Lewis, McCowatt, StamenicBell
Attackers -  BarbarousesGreive, Rogerson, RojasWaine, Wood

I'd say the most likely to be unavailable (non injury related, club verus country), M Boxall, Tuiloma & Rojas.

Getting down to business end of the MLS. Minnesota play 18th Sept & Portland 19th. Throw in a days travel and you can probably rule out Tuiloma starting the game in Brisbane. Coach Heath at Minny has been difficult before with getting Boxall snr released. But you'd think a so so rare big game in NZ, and against the old enemy would have all the players gagging to turn up.

If either are unavailble then yes Kyle Adams could be in line for a call up, given Smith & Niko Boxall haven't played for ages now.

Colo Colo play 16th Sept & then not until 3rd Oct, so Rojas hopefully flies across from Chile. But if he or any of the other forwards are unavailable, Mata could edge Champness - who also hasn't played for a long time. Last heard to be training in Auckland??

De Jong & Collier will be in the mix as well.

And if Singh is back training at Regensberg, could he be a longshot?

As others has suggested, he could annouce a retirement after these 2 games. We all want the AWs to perform strongly, even beat the Socceroos. You have to pick him. Plenty of time over next 3-4 years for Hay or whoever to experiment with some new CBs, ahead of WC 2026

And not a bad way for Winnie to go out, last game in front of a big crowd, played in the city he was born. First visit back 'home' in like 10 years.

Keep an eye on NZF's socials, esp Twitter. They posted alot of stuff when AWs were last in camp prior the CR game.

https://twitter.com/nz_football

The home ground of QLD NPL side Lions FC, may not be a bad bet given Fenton & Ridenton both play there. They won the league by 12 points, but lost their home semi 2-3 to Olympic, so didn't make the GF.

Gold Coast Knights with Scott McDonald as player-coach, alongside ex Nixer Mirza Muratovic - won the GF.

Arnie was on SBS here in Aussie earlier tonight saying he planned to give everyone in his 31 man squad, game time in these 2 games. Everyone with a fair chance to make the WC squad. A bit of experimentation.

Reckon if the AWs take it pretty seriously playing mostly their strongest starting 11, they could pinch a win. Especially at Eden Park.

Pinch a win? Pinch a win! What sort of talk is this? The All Whites will not be "pinching" anything. This is a clash of equals as far as I am concerned.

Yes is more true, and I was almost tempted to say that. This is potentially the most evenly matched the Socceroos & AWs (full strength) are, maybe since the 1980s. AWs pushed them in that MCG game in 2010, but in the end still lost.

Will still be underdogs, but here's hoping a lot of Socceroos fans are shocked by actually how good we are, especially our young midfield. Real pity Singh & Thomas will be missing.

https://sport.optus.com.au/articles/os47652/tommy-oar-why-a-league-debutants-face-tough-socceroos-task?setDevice=mobile

The stakes are high and it wouldn’t surprise me if these two upcoming games are played with extreme caution, although the players who throw that caution to the wind will be the ones who are most likely to stick in Arnie’s thoughts between now and the final squad announcement on November 13.

Missing out on a $16M payday may also explain some pretty budget looking AWs shirts. Even for Elon Musk that's a bit of dosh

https://www.fbcnews.com.fj/sports/football/all-whites-name-squad-for-trans-tasman-clashes-with-socceroos/

Hay said Rojas, at Chile’s Colo-Colo, would be best served staying in South America to break into the first team.

“He’s so important in terms of what he’s doing over there, creating pathways for Kiwi footballers,” Hay said.

While Australia will use the matches as a springboard to the World Cup, beginning in November, New Zealand will head into hiatus following the series.

Hay said the governing body were feeling the pinch from missing Qatar and weren’t likely to play again until March.

“There was more than just getting to the World Cup in that game against Costa Rica. The $16million was a big factor and it was a big part of New Zealand Football’s financial planning,” he said.

The matches could also be Hay’s last at the helm, with a contract expiring at month’s end.

The 47-year-old said it was undecided whether he’d stay on, but he felt he had more to offer in the role.

“We’ll have time to sit down on how everything’s gone and then make some decisions,” he said.

Hay was controversially chosen for the role ahead of Des Buckingham, who led New Zealand to a win against Erling Haaland-led Norway at the 2019 Under-19 World Cup.

Danish boys arriving on Tuesday. No time to get over jet lag before Thursday. But of a worry as we have limited midfield players -CH and Old might get some decent minutes on Thursday.

There will be a few late arrivals. Tuiloma another from memory. All the ALM guys plus yes Howieson could get good mins in game 1.

Both Bell & Stamenic's Superliga clubs play Monday morning NZ time. You would think they will arrive Tuesday evening at the earliest in Brissy. Then a stretch of the legs on Wednesday.

Tough ask to then start against Socceroos on the Thursday. But no doubt will be a number of Aussie players in same position of arriving late. Marko's club team mate Matt Ryan for one.

Probably partly explains why Arnie picked a 31 man squad. ALM guys plus others who arrive early start Suncorp game, late arrivals start game at EP.

If they don't start, they should be okay. Bell has been on the bench for the last two games and Stamenic doesn't usually start for FCK, they have better players.

Apparently Central Coast teenager Garang Kuol is close to agreeing a move to Newcastle United but short of that happening there are only three members of this team (Socceroos) currently playing in one of Europe’s top five leagues. The All Whites also have three... can’t imagine too many times when that’s been the case. Australia always used to have a solid core of guys employed at the highest level but long gone are the days of Kewell, Viduka, Schwarzer, Neill, Emerton, Cahill, etc.

Boxall played yesterday, Tuiloma today. Extra day's rest may mean Boxall starts.

And yes, Just in midfield makes sense. Could also see the more in form Waine starting ahead of Greive.

Also could see a back four, given Kirwan is unavailable. It's a reasonably big departure for Payne to go from typically playing centre-back to wing-back, so a back four could accommodate him more. Cacace has played plenty in a four in the past so shouldn't have any issues there.

Greive is a bit lacking on game time, so could go a front three and move Just into a wide right position, playing a guy in behind Wood, and then have McCowatt or Waine wide left cutting in, using a 4-2-3-1 shape Hay's used on occasions.

Also a small chance Hay splits the keeping between Sail and Woud, like he has in all other friendly windows.

But in reality that's probably the most likely lineup, I imagine the plan will be to stay quite defensive and work without the ball, keeping the scoreline down more so than running the scoreline up.

Can’t see how Woud is getting selected when he’s not playing. Maybe looking for a new club? He’s had mixed performances at the Olympics. He seems to have done well in the cup in Japan, but against J2 opposition.

Marinovic playing, Crocombe playing, Searle getting time, Tzanev playing.

And for all that I love Ollie Sail, Marinovic should still be the incumbent as Ollie has been involved in that keeping error recently. He needs more accountability to keep him at a top level. Uffie, at club level, kind of signaled last season he wouldn’t drop him for Paulsen.

Ollie, Stefan and Tzanev seem to be playing the most consistently. But Ollie is in off season and Stefan is the most experienced senior keeper.

Anyway it’s a friendly, but it does seem odd.

Marinovic may well be playing but not well by the looks of things. Sail is easily the better keeper as far as shot stopping and distribution, clearly the way forward.

Not sure about Marinovic, but Tzanev is certainly coming in for strong criticism from Dons fans. Not helped that either's club is struggling.

But good chance Marinovic made himself unavailable, plus League One (Searle) and League Two (Crocombe & Tzanev) are playing through the FIFA window - and all 3 keepers wouldn't want to risk their starters spots to sit on the pine down under.

Sail you would think will start both games. Fans would be spitting tacks, if Woud (given his recent record of howlers) cost the AWs an oh so rare win over the Socceroos, with a huge error. Him & Hay go way back, but can't see Danny taking that risk.

Sails form of late has not been great... made the mistake against Peru and also looked shaky in the cup, especially when playing as a sweeper keeper.

Needs to stop trying to play with his feet and stick to making saves.

Easy with hindsight. But I thought there were 3 positions that Hay got wrong against Costa Rica. Should have had the more experienced players for this game in Marinovic, Boxall and Just on instead of Sail, Pijnaker and Grieve.
Thought our inexperience at the back went a long way to costing us that early goal. And Grieve was just a bit much of a roll of the dice. Just had shown good form in previous games under Hay with goals and assists. Easy in Hindsight though like I said.
But against Australia. This is different and more the type of game that you give young potential a crack. When the stakes are not so high.
