The Herbert defence is admirable, but the warning signs have been there since the Oceania debacle. Be interesting to see how the Stuff and Herald writers react. Like the radio guys, most are fanclub supporters of the game, and won't have a go. Millmow and Worthington hopefully will. Were they wrong about Herbert at the Phoenix ? Smith has written one article about Herbert needing technical help. The later issue is our only hope. Have a look at USA v Mexico tomorrow, and see how you feel then.

If we fail to qualify obviously ricki is gone but NZF will have to cut other jobs too. And less money for games at every international window; and obviously less other stuff. We should all be bloody praying we do get through.

Kotahitanga. We are one.

Don't worry I am praying. To see that sellout return game destroyed by the inability of the NZF to make hard decisions when they needed to, will take some getting over. It will take football years to be back in favour with outside fans, if AW's can't start the Wn game with a real shot at qualifying.

Tickets on trademe aint exactly selling like hotcakes.

If it was a trial game then we better hope our midfield comes back to play when needed...and Fenton gets lucky.

A small town in Europe........looking to bounce straight back up....well that aint going to happen

We have more depth than ever before and we are argubly playing as badly as we ever have over the last 10 years... so how do we explain that? Ifil saved Ricki for the first two seasons at the NIX and similarly Rojas in his last year with us and Nelsen at the Olympics. Ricki needs a talismen to cover his short comings as a coach. Best depth ever, as look at us.

Its all very well saying lets cut Herbert some slack because this was only a friendly and he was only trialing players and some guys were injured but the fact is thats crap....and we all know its crap because we have seen it all  before. This is classic Herbert. Playing guys out of position(Dura), playing guys out of form(Leo, Lochy).

Whats been the the big plan since the last WC? What has been the development process to refresh the squad since the last WC. Four years have gone and he is still trundling out guys who are well past it. What an inditement on the whole NZF World Cup plan that we are playing guys like Vilicich(a 37 y.o outfielder) and Leo and Locky who can't get a gig for their local club.

Why are we were we are now? Did someone not see the writing on the wall after Honiara? Two months away from the most vital games for NZ football in 4 years and we are floundering. Our defense is rubbish, the first 11 squad is far from settled, we are trialing players out of position, the tactics are baffling, the players seemed to be confused. How did we allow ourselves to drift into this situation?  The finger can be pointed at Herbert because he has been uber-fuehrer for the last 4 years but NZF must be held to account as well

I should clarify my earlier post about the questions to be asked.

I too want Herbert out and agree he should have gone after Honiara but for a loser CEO (who oddly enough bailed himself when questions got asked of him...) but the reality is, he is there. They are not replacing him until November or he retires in July next year so in the interim, we have to get on with it, as sad as that reality is. Yes he has a lot to answer for for the current shape of the team but this hand wringing will be for nought if he gets us back to WC2014. If that happens, who is really going to question him in this country having gone back to back WCs. Revisionists of history will write it up as a Rocky Balboa story getting up from the canvas. Football purists will be in the know but Joe Public will knight him like Graham Henry.

We do have some new talent coming through but it's not going to be seen under Herbert's watch. That class of '81 is there until bust or boom and there is stuff all we can do or say other than speculate. As sucky as it is and as much as the majority of posts on him are right, people should also know that as much as nothing has changed thus far, nothing is going to change in the immediate future unless someone can seriously bend his ear.

If I am wrong, please correct me but I think I'm pretty accurate in this one.

A poor display from the AWs, but also a very good one from UAR. Impressive skills and speed. That should be the end of Siggy in a white shirt for a good long time.

Sad when no one really has a good game.
Surprised that last game C James took the dead ball kicks and did quite well, instead today we have three other ppl given the job. All terrible.

I guess it was just Ricki giving a trial to others, just like Killen not required. He was better than Wood last game, so maybe Ricki thought, 'oh well that answers that question, Killy you can go back to your club!'

Kosta looked like the selfish player he was back at the Nix in the bad old days.

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

That last line there is bang on. Kosta would beat one guy and the try and dribble through the rest of the defence when he had Wood etc in good positions.

Thought Howeison was pretty good at dead-ball but agree that James was brilliant in game one so strange not to see him given a chance.

WTF is it with Ricki? ok, I agree with some experimenting but why does he continually play players out of position? Does he like to see them struggle? Leo at RB is a classic example. Come on Ricki, try different formations but at least put players into those positions whom actually play in them. DOH!.

Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Saddest sight for me was a camera shot of Rikki about ten minutes from the final whistle. He was sat on the bench, mouth gormlessly hanging open, staring into space and not saying a word. Where did the passion go mate?

Lochy? Really?

Siggy? You tool. Some people said words to the effect "I know he's a thug, but he's our thug". Not good enough. Goodnight.

I am also VERY worried about Moss as No.1 for the Phoenix on that performance (and the previous one).......

Nostalgia isnt what it used to be...........

I believe he will. That move to Russia was the wrong one, shouldve stayed in Aussie.

But then he did well in Greece at Panathinaikos, appearing in most of their games in the second half of last season, a league somewhat better than the A-League.

The real question is, what's left of the momentum from the 2010 campaign? Are the AW playing better football then four years ago? Can we see improvements when we watch those games: style of play, introducing youth, tactics, fitness? Coaches always have a philosophy, the next step, what is Ricki's plan, did he talked about it? Why is Fenton, Boyd not playing?

I fully agree. I feel like we are sufferring from a serious lack of foresight and long term positive vision.

This question needs to be asked after November because how would that team have gone today with Marco, Wee Mac etc and had Ricki picked his best side rather than trialling players in positions. To be fair, they may not have done better, but those two are key pieces in our team (plus others) Ricki may have asked them play a certain way to test something (which clearly did not work)
Game was a debacle - but could all be part of some genius secret master-plan to confuse the potential opposition come November who would've been scouting these games in Saudi.
Ricki did say during the week that he won't be revealing his tactical plans in these games...
I remember that in friendlies before Bahrain, Ricki kept his real formations for training sessions and then sprung them on Bahrain....

It's generally understood that a keeper is responsible for organising the defence. In this game on several crucial occasions our defence appeared to all fall into a trance at once. Not very impressed...

Didn't he play 3,4,3 in the game in Jordan, which was our real practice game? That was the first time he played that system

I hope they fine Siggy his match fee as punishment and as a way of recouping the cost nzf will face because of the red card.

We have two more friendlies to sort out the mess that is nzf at the moment.

Alot of pressure will go on Rojas and McG to change the dynamics of the team.

disagree.  a keeper's isn't responsible for full backs tearing off up field while the ball is being lost in a vulnerable position.

Moss has his Captain just in front of him - who should be doing the organisation and chatter. (did not see much evidence of it though)

I kinda laugh a little at this.

As I mentioned on the Saudi match thread, in that game, all you could hear was Moss twittering away. I actually said something to the effect of 'for all those people that say Moss can't organise a defense, his voice is very loud and very clear at doing so'

Sam Malcolmson obviously wasn't at Newtown Park when Kevin Hagan kicked a prone Russian player in the head. As one the crowd booed, then chanted "off, off, off", then cheered when the red card was shown before booing Hagan all the way to the dressing rooms.

I thought that Moss should have been shouting "don't foul him and then deliberately stomp on him" when Siggy was chasing the attacker near the end of the game.  Paston would have.

Worst? Worst? Younger generation just won't believe ye when ye tell o' dirty deeds of 70's and 80's.

Kevin Hagan - there was a hard man and favourite of Fallon (Gee, "Four Yorkshiremen Sketch" seems even more relevant - just realised Kev Fallon's the fifth Yorkshireman !!!)

Ahhh, memories of appropriately-named Kevin Huff of Manurewa marching up to Frank van Hattum, Christchurch United's new signing from Manurewa during National League game at QE II Stadium 1983 - POW!!! Punches Frank in the face, breaking his jaw...
