AWs squad could be named late next week. I think AV has written expect a naming about 2 weeks before their first game on the 27th March verus Finland

This was the 24 man squad named last November (Colombia & Ecuador).
Lots of withdrawls and then additions from the original team naming.

Nando Pijnaker, Ryan Thomas, Chris Wood, Tim Payne, Liberato Cacace, Alex Paulsen and Callum McCowatt were all either unavailable or withdrew from the initial selection.

OPP, McGarry, Randall, Tzanev and Tommy Smith were all added to the initial selection.

Think I have all the comings & goings correct, but might be an error in there.

Goalkeepers: Max Crocombe, Kees Sims, Nik Tzanev
Defenders: Francis de Vries,  James McGarry, Tyler Bindon, Michael Boxall, George Stanger, Finn Surman, Bill Tuiloma, Storm Roux, Tommy Smith
Midfielders: Joe Bell, Matt Garbett, Ben Old, Owen Parker-Price, Sarpreet Singh, Marko Stamenić, Alex Rufer
Forwards: Eli Just, Jesse Randall, Andre de Jong, Ben Waine, Kosta Barbarouses

The guys in
bold I think are at the most risk of being dropped/not selected, November to now.

Out - Singh
In - Paulsen, McCowatt, Payne
Possible Outs - Garbett, Tzanev, Stanger, Smith, OPP, ADJ
Possible Ins - Cacace, Nando Pijnaker, Henry Gray, Michael Woud, Callan Elliot, Lachlan Bayliss, and Moses Dyer - some others I can't think of
Unavailable -  Wood, Singh, Thomas?, Dalton Wilkins? Pijnaker?

Possible March 23 man squad
Goalkeepers: Crocombe, Paulsen, Tzanev
Defenders: de Vries, Cacace, Bindon, Boxall, Pijnaker, Surman, Tuiloma, Payne
Midfielders: Bell, Garbett, Old, Parker-Price, Bayliss, Stamenić, Rufer
Forwards: Just, Randall, Waine, Barbarouses and Mata

Singh and Wood are definitely not available. Thomas big question mark, he went off injured last night. Apparently he's been getting pain killing injections to play at Zwolle.
Garbett and Cacace likely not far off a return to play in the UK, but it maybe better they don't travel, and concentrate on having their bodies right for when the AWs go into World Cup camp.

I listened to Crocombe on the Ben Foster podcast recently, and Crocs said the 50-60 hour round trip to UK-NZ-UK is tough.
He can spend up to a day nearly in bed in NZ during a window, if the jet lag hits him hard. Window is a chance to look at different selection options like Old at LB, and Bayliss in midfield.

Sims (Swedish league to start after the March window) and Gray (Harrogate battling to survive in L2) may both stay in Europe.
So the 3rd keeper could be one of Tzanev or Woud. Experienced UK journeyman Tzanev more likely to be the perfect 3rd keeper setting up the cones, and offering Crocs and AP some coaching advice. It's basically his role now at Huddersfield it seems as 3rd/4th choice.

Bayliss deserves a crack ahead of ADJ. But both maybe picked if Thomas & Garbett are unavailable.

Pijnaker if over his groin injury, should come in for Stanger & Tommy Smith. Roux and Elliot may both miss out if otherwise CBs Bindon and Tuiloma are considered the best RB backups to Payne.

It might yet be that Bindon starts at RB in the World Cup. Honestly the AWs ain't strong enough to leave a quality Championship level player on the pine, at the big dance. He must be playing very well to keep his starting spot at The Blades.

Dyer is my smokey. I do wonder what would have happened if he had stayed with Galway in the LOI?
If he'd continued his hot goal scoring run there, he may just have forced Baze's hand. Mata got picked for the AWs for 1-2 years from the LOI.  But Cambodia is in reality just so far off the radar it's hard to assess his credentials.

His position in a full strength AWs is now at RB not CB. I think he’s still ahead of Roux and Elliot as a RB

Tuiloma at the Nix is pretty much the same as Tuiloma at Charlotte. Prone to defensive errors but a goal threat at the other end, plus a very useful long switch pass. That’s why they had him mostly at RB

Wood and attacking midfielder Sarpreet Singh are set to miss those fixtures with injuries.

Left back Liberato Cacace and midfielders Matt Garbett and Ryan Thomas are other key figures under injury clouds at present.

Bazeley is set to name his squad the week beforehand.

I think Woud has been in decent form and he’s playing regularly. Probably deserves the nod. Facing quality daily in training, tough corner routines and May, Randall and Brook shooting at him.

He’s currently the best kiwi keeper available in Australasia, given injuries etc.

I haven’t seen the video, but we’ve had a few interesting keepers over the time with Utting and Batty and a few others. I need my keeper to make saves, not necessarily be the most balanced individual! All Whites are All Whites, not the segregated by clubs English teams of the 90s and 2000s. Let’s keep it that way from the beginning and not make the extra professionals an issue we don’t need.

Totally agree. The raw talent is there imo but would be doing him a disservice by gifting him another AW cap. To my mind has not really developed anywhere as much as we were all hoping. Whether this is a function of the coaching and/or the environment only time will tell but he needs to be putting in more consistent performances with an end product to really kick on.

Yeah I think Bindon at right back is a great shout. Payne has been pretty poor this season. Maybe he can show he’s worthy to keep his spot under greeny but it’d take a lot for me to pick him a starter now. He’s been getting exposed at A League level and I can’t imagine what’d happen when he faces world class wingers.

Problem is it’s not Bindon’s best position by any stretch but I think we are just gonna have to make it work. He’s not one to get forward and beat a man or whip a quality ball in. But I’d rather sacrifice that than have someone who’s gonna be able to defend on the other end which is the priority.

Besides the right back position which has a question mark I think every other position is locked in.

Crocombe
Bindon/Payne, Surman, Boxall, Cacace
Bell, Stamenic
Thomas
Singh Wood Just.

Anyone differ?

Might be a strategic consideration. Having a strong defender in reserve given injuries or late impact or the nature of tournament play might be a go. Wilkins is a LB?

Payne/Elliot/Roux are a step below the CB and CMs. Tuiloma should be asking to play RB at the Nix.

Wilkins is primarily a LB, but can play on the right side.
Sadly he's just consistantly breaking down.

Can Libby play on the right?
It seems that Old is now making a great fist of it as a LB with St Etienne, and he has genuine pace.

It's the biggest negative with FDV at LB. Just fear that some of really pacey opposition players that are in the AWs pool, he will struggle to contain. His WC role should be to come off the pine if the AWs are chasing a goal, and bang in some crosses/dead balls to Wood.

But if Cacace could pay on the right, then with Old on the other flank, the AWs would have two genuinely quick full backs playing at a very decent level in Europe.

Of course that is all reliant on Libby himself being injury free. And yes agree Tuiloma should be asking for Nix mins at RB/RWB

If we're talking chance of Tyler Bindon as right back (pace possibly the only thing holding that back) to get our best players on...

Why not three at the back and wing backs? Libby was signed for such a position and could a Ben Old or Callum McCowatt do similar and a Boxall-Surman-Bindon work as a three at the back?

Bazeley seems pretty set on a 4-3-3, and apparently alot of that has been player driven.

Though I'm sure if the AWs are ever looking to protect a lead, or even hold onto a draw in the 2nd half of their pool games, Dazza will be tempted to throw on a 3rd CB.

Boxy slotted in between Bindon & Surman in the 82nd min of last year's 1-0 win over the Ivorians.
86 mins (1-1) against Norway and Bindon comes in alongside Finn and Michael.

Into an international break on the back of two Nix wins, how good.

Hope Tuiloma is OK, we only have 3 CBs in this squad, and it isn't like we can replace him with Hughes after what happened to him today. Hughes or Stanger should really have been in the squad for me.

Wonder if we will finally see our three best midfielders together. I am hoping for the following XI:

Crocombe
Payne Surman Bindon de Vries
Bell Thomas
McCowatt Stamenic Just
Waine

Would love for Payne to regain some form and confidence from this window too.

Pretty much agree with the above my only change would be De Vries benched for Old. But Baze has said they see Old as LW not LWB, also I think there is a good chance one of Bell, Thomas, or Stamenic will on the pine as they are all more DM and put Just into the 10 spot and Old starts on the LW

I'd like to see Old gets mins at LB. Sounds like he's playing really well in that position at St Etienne, and to play at a really high level that might well be his career club spot from here.

Also have concerns about FDV's pace and defensive abilities against the pacey top attackers he could face at the World Cup. That's if in the worse case scenario Libby is not fit to start in June.

Though I also think the idea of OId playing LB and Cacace RB might have some merit. That's given Payne, and Elliot have been very mixed this ALM season. Elliot got dragged at HT yesterday, I see in Auckland's loss.

Two questions need to be asked about that idea, firstly is he up to the task defensively? He plays LB in a team that is very dominant in Ligue 2, the AWs will be unlikely to dominate possession and territory at the World Cup. And the other question is, can Cacace do that much better than our other options at right back?

The fact that McGarry was picked in this squad signals to me that Baze is not planning on trying Old at LB.

SE had a dominant 4-0 win overnight, but they usually have to fight harder than that. Dangerous to just look at a highlights compilation in isolation, but Old doing some good defensive stuff in here (via Niche Cache). It's FDV's lack of pace I worry about if Libby wasn't fit to start in June. Old doesn't lack speed.

Reckon we may need to see some Ben Old left-back minutes for the All Whites next window 👀 https://t.co/36AasrtChX
— The Niche Cache (@thenichecache) February 23, 2026

Without Singh and Garbett, Old is more needed this March FIFA window as an attacking wing option. But if they are both fit in June, Bazeley could be looking more at Old as a LB/LWB.

The Libby to RB is yes more a left field idea, and yes I doubt Bazeley is seriously considering it. Bindon (playing bloody well at the Blades) to RB is far more likely, as an alternative to Payne/Elliot/Tuiloma. None of those last 3 are standouts in the ALM, which I think you should be now as a minimum to start for this AWs side.
Permalink Permalink
Early days but Tuiloma does look to me like he will generally be a top-tier A-League player (though maybe not at right back). But he clearly has been picked as a CB only in this window with two (other) RBs picked.

Payne at his best is one of the very best in the league too, though hasn't been anywhere near his best in a while. It really does seem to me that the hope (and Baze's plan) is that Payne will be able to get back to his best in time for the World Cup, as he should not have made this squad on current form. Elliot and Roux currently are far better (though Elliot for me will always be too shaky defensively even at his best).

4 or even 5 of Randall, Waine, Garbett, Singh, Old and McCowatt will likely be bench impact players for a fully fit AWs at the World Cup.
They all have vastly more experience than LBS, and Singh plus Waine excepted, have been regular starters for their clubs this season in leagues comparable or superior to the ALM.

LBS needs to contribute a goal or assist every Nix game until season end, to be a WC chance. Basically knock down the selection door like Randall has done.

If he could somehow join the squad in the USA as a wider squad member, would be a great experience for him. Even to have him up in Auckland this window training with AWs would be really good for his continued development.

Of that group, only Randall has a similar profile to LBS. Someone with the pace and directness to genuinely challenge tired defenders in the last 10, 15 minutes. The others are all like-for-like changes, fresh legs, but outside of Randall (who could well start) they're not going to dribble past three and create something out of nothing.

Totally agree he needs to keep proving himself, but he hasn't been given the minutes this season to really stake a claim. Hopefully that changes with Greenacre in the remaining matches.

But there's room for a punt on someone who offers something different. we don't need all 26 to be safe picks.

You are forgetting ALM season 2023/24 and this guy. Note he's playing as a defender in the clip below.

Again if LBS finishes the ALM season with goals and assist he becomes an outside chance.
But with only 327 ALM mins and 2 assists this season to date, he's not currently in the 26 to be picked. As above I'd hope Baze can bring into the squad at Albany to train for a few days this week.

The likes of Old, Randall and now Bayliss got into the AWs off the back of break out A League seasons and consistent goal contributions. And that's the way it should be.

As coochiee says - LBS will dribble past three and create something, but Ben Old won’t????

Luke’s ball skills aren’t there yet, especially his initial touch. Still deserves far more opportunity than he’s getting at the Nix

Really sorry. This isn't the right thread I know but I didn't know a better one (okay maybe the final pick for 26 world cup). Hope you don't mind me asking. Based on form surely Hughes isn't far away from getting a call up? I get he wouldn't be like high on the list/behind other defenders but from my mind (or maybe my bias) he has been mostly solid that even I didn't expect him to play I still would've thought he might've been called up for these games. Though of course now with what occurred during the last Nix game he wouldn't be able to play.

Totally get others will have different opinions....especially because others probably follow All White players at their clubs way more closely than I do

Here are the CBs on Piney's latest top 50 rankings (which didn't include Hughes).

Boxall, Surman, Bindon, Pijnaker, Smith, Tuiloma, Stanger, Kelly-Heald

- First 4 clearly ahead of him
- Smith's in Piney's list coz he thinks Baze will take him (good team vibes man and Woodsies mate), personally I don't think he should be near the playing squad and if you want too take him take him as a coach
- If I was picking a starting center back I'd take Hughes over Tuiloma based on how they've performed next to each over in the last couple months, but in a squad as cover I'd take Bill (can cover RB and his set piece threat)
- Stanger I'm not as familiar with, but he is playing in a higher league
- LKH, Hughes is picked over him every week, only benefit LKH offers is LB cover where we are stacked

So somewhere around 7th choice for me. Given 5 CB in a squad that gives him a reasonable chance at a call up sometime

Ahh okay that is interesting! Thank you!

Boxy and Smith will retire from international football after the WC, and yes Hughes should be ahead of Tommy S already in the CB pecking order.

Good chance Issac will get a 1st AWs cap before 2026 finishes, but the WC is unlikely for him. Especially now that Stanger is back starting in the SPL.

Hughes would likely need two of Pijnaker, Tuiloma & Stanger either injured or not playing for their clubs to make the final 26.

Still IH is the best transfer fee prospect for the Nix in the immediate short term.  UK born and you'd think some League One clubs will be looking at him.

As Baze says in this short snippet this squad is for this window, the WC selection will be different. For example I think Bazeley almost sees Tuiloma more as a RB option for the WC, if Surman, Bindon, Boxall & Pijnaker are all available. Billy T has played more as RB for the AWs this cycle than as a CB.

What a celebration 🥳🥳🥳 as it should be...

Don't see Finland troubling the All Whites even with all the injuries. Looking at the squad for these two games who would you say is really inform?

To me that where Baze sometimes gets things wrong. Forget the club they playing for, forget their reputation. Who is on fire..

On that just alone....his got to start Bayliss

Vancouver will be the wrong place to get in form.
