seems all of Peru's players have now arrived. For whatever reason they are only training once a day, from 4.15pm onwards. I have no idea what they are doing for the rest of the day.

Now I know the average ability of the Peruvian squad is immeasurably better than the All Whites squad, however i feel it's important to not underestimate the quality of our best players. We have a first team premier league striker, they do not. We have a premier league team's vice-captain centre back, they do not. We have two Eredivisie wingers, they do not (Thomas is the star player of Zwolle too). Now I'm not for a second saying we have a better team, not by a long shot - but the fact is it's not completely impossible to get a result on Saturday, our absolute star players are arguably better than theirs (the problem is the rest of their squad is far better than the rest of ours). Looking at their squad without Guerrero, it the goal-scoring expectations will fall to Farfan/Ruidiaz, Cueva, Carillo and Flores. The rest of the squad is mostly Peruvian league players - and while the Mexican team from four years ago was also mainly made of domestic league players, the Mexican league is miles better than the Peruvian league. We're still massive underdogs, but maybe, just maybe the football gods will be looking down on us and feel like making Piney go mental in the commentary box. Get hyped folks #COYAW

Totally agree that we have good enough players to cause an upset at the Cake tin. Half our outfield players are starters in OK level European first Div sides. If you throw in Smith from the Championship and then the three who are regular starters at MLS level then we have plenty of talent. Certainly enough to give Peru a good match.
However for me this match will come down to a battle of the two coaches.....and I am afraid that this is where we will fall down.. I have little faith in Hudsons ability to formulate the appropriate tactics and analysis to win us this game. He was quoted as saying he did not enjoy one minute of the Conf cup. The reality is that he has been found out at this level. We are still waiting to see what Hudson football looks like,after three and a half years. Will we park the bus, will we long ball it, will we press high and try and win the ball in their half or concede possession and defend in numbers.....who knows..because we have seen Hudsons team try and fail in all these tactics.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Gareca is a really pragmatic coach who always gets to know how the other team plays and plans the game according to that. In Argentina he coached Velez Sarfield for 4 years, that's not something you see very often, and he won 5 titles, with his team being competive every tournament. And before that he already had 14 years of coaching experience. I'm afraid that our problem ends ups being our coach and tactics rather than the level of our players.

I read I think on stuff that Peru are travelling back to Lima straight after the match on Saturday. Obviously they’ll have to go to Auckland first and fuel up but they’ll have an extra day or so to prepare for the return leg.

I would have thought that travelling straight after the game on a long haul flight would not be the best thing to do after hopefully a bruising encounter against the All Whites (Even if they are in 1st/business class). Virtually no time for any recovery/treatment for sore bodies etc...Last thing i'd want to do after a hard football game is get on a 15 hour flight!
Also, what is the ideal result for NZ after the first leg to approach the second?

It's a charter flight for Peru. They will have their own physios, doctors etc all on board complete with massage tables etc.
Socceroos were first to do this (that I know of), with playoffs against Uruguay back in 2005. Helps to have Frank Lowry's millions, when need a little extra expense. They claimed it gave them a massive edge for game 2 in Sydney - the poor Uruguayans travelling on a simple commercial flight from Montevideo to Aussie - as AWs will be doing this time in reverse.
That 2nd leg of course went to ET, with Uruguayans virtually walking at the end of 120 mins, but managed to hang on until the penalty shootout.

Well it is at San Pedro Sula that place is dodgy AF, though I've been to San Salvador (which is homicide capital) and managed to get out alive but for those places security is absolutely necessary. Lima is nowhere near as bad as that and the AW's have been to El Salvador and Mexico during the previous World Cup cycle so they atleast have experience in Latin America and in my opinion the harshest countries in terms of hostility and climate. It doesn't mean that the AW's should let their guard down for a moment but hopefully the Peruvian people arn't as hostile to our team as the Uruguayans were to Aussie back in the day.
