Interesting that this article suggests that, while Guerrero didn't train on Friday with the Peruvian squad, he trained "normally" with Flamengo - I wonder if this means he has shaken off the injury he was supposed to be carrying?

yeah he was expected to play for Flamengo vs Gremio on the 5th November

Guerrero and Trauco were not expected to make the chartered flight from Lima to Wellington and would fly via Buenos Aires on Monday 6th

Holy shark. I was looking for one of these back in May for a musical I was playing in the band for.

Where did you get this from? The only ones I could find online were going to cost me $200.

J Hudson & Co. Birmingham. Made for the RAF as a "downed airman's" whistle. Didn't help the manufacturers tho - they were hit by a German bomb in 1940, which nearly put them out of business.

Note: the article states provisionally suspended for 30 days after failing a doping test...When this is confirmed and can not be over turned or appealed then OK...

Also, Paolo Guerrero's fear of flying is very well known (major panic attacks) - So, I would not be surprised to see him return as captain and lead the team in the return leg in Lima...if this remains provisional decision.

Personally I think its pretty safe to say he wont play

starting CB Christian Ramos pulled out injured from his club game, his usual replacement Miguel Araujo is still injured. Peru might have to use their 4th choice CB

If it's a sign, surely it's that we make it to the WC and get smashed by Germany during pool play but manage to scrape through to the next round.

'cause if we don't qualify that would nearly put NZF out of business

A quick look through Peruvian press shows that they provide regular coverage of all our All White related stories from Stuff, NZ Herald and such. The daily "El Comercio" (so the equivalent of Financial Times etc) has daily digest of what our media say about the playoffs.

I'll say they probably expect that the relative lack of football coverage (by Peruvian standards) in our media is simply a sinister Hudson conspiracy ploy to keep our tactics and selection secret from the prying Peruvian eyes.

(NB. the same paper reports the suspension for Guerrero as given, not as provisional. But I agree with others here that whether it is provisional or not the coach will make plans to bring someone else anyway to avoid last minute complications.)

The Peruvian coach called up 27 players, there does not appear to be any new player called up to replace Paolo Guerrero.

The team is pretty much set in stone with the only doubts being the injury status of CB Ramos and who will replace Guerrero (either Farfan or Ruidiaz). Most of the press believe it will be Jefferson Farfan who is Peru's 4th all time scorer

team should be the standard 4-2-3-1

It looks fairly certain that Guerrero will request another test of the 'B Sample' to see if the same result occurs. It also sounds that the substance found in the first sample is a by-product of cocaine, but can also be produced by drinking coca leaf tea, or even using some topical ointments in that part of the world.

The question is: does the 30-day provisional suspension stand regardless, and how long will testing of the B sample, and Guerrero offering his explanation to FIFA/CONMEBOL take? Seems unlikely the whole process could be finished in time for next Saturday either way?

Obviously his absence would help the All Whites, but I would feel very sorry for the guy if he missed the playoffs, and was later cleared of doping because he could prove he just had a munch on a coca leaf or something.

I dont think the B sample will be done in time. The coach has moved on and has called up Yordy Reyna from Vancouver.

There was a similar case a few years back involving a Peruvian player. To this day he does not know how the substance got into his system, essentially he had to take a hair sample test in order to prove he was not a habitual user. He was given 6 months (potentially best case scenario for Guerrero at this stage).

There was also a case involving a Brazilian goalie in the 90s who 15 days after testing positive was cleared due to proving coca tea was the culprit, his ban was revoked immediately.

The question is how the Peru team will react, will they lose the plot like Argentina did in WC 94 after Maradona was banned or will this galvanise them to play their asses off for their fallen captain.

Winston Reid played 90 mins this morning, looked ok (West Ham got beat 4-1) He pushed out too quickly on one of the goals, and maybe was on the wrong side of the defender for another. But made quite a few interceptions and blocks for a terrible West Ham team. Took a kick to the shins late in the game but seemed fine.

Chris Wood also played this morning, got through 65mins before being replaced... was pretty lacklustre. But I'm mostly pleased to have these to playing just before the playoff games.

Great to see the big names come through fine. WIll certainly have an impression on the team by just being there. Reid's wife seems to be in Auckland already according to Gordie on twitter. Good signs.

Very pleased to see Brockie back. Rory obv only there as a motivator. I dont have a problem with him being there.

It would have been very poor to ignore Brockie just as he has been nominated for "African Player of the Year (Based in Africa)" this week.

Brocks is the first non-African to ever be nominated for this award for the best player playing on the African continent.

Happy to see Lewis there. Think he was a good part of the confeds cup work.

Ingham and Colvey there, but Doyle not is an interesting one.

Doyle has the ability to hit the odd wonder strike or make a wonder run which could come in handy, plus has been starting.

Roux fans will be happy.

Fallon wasted space. You don't have to be in the squad to be a motivator. Bring him in as part of the coaching staff and take a player who might go on the field.

Brotherton and Dyer out, can't say I'm not mad if Hudson's finally got over his love affair. Would have loved to have seen more Jai

I honestly don't think Fallon will play a minute, but I do think its important that he's part of the playing group and not the staff. In any other games this would be a silly selection but I think in the locker room, the training pitch and the team morale he'll bring alot to the team. Think it would be different if he was outside the team.

For these two one off games, he will be more valuable than Boyd not getting minutes.

Permalink Permalink

If Fallon wasn't called into the squad then his club didn't have to release him.

Permalink Permalink

It's a cliche but Fallon will bring the belief... "it can be done."

That attitude is probably more important than any selection.

To summarize the key players that have missed out - Doyle, Gleeson and Boyd.

The people possibly should have been left out - Fallon, Crocombe, Smeltz or even one of Wynne/Colvey.
