I missed the start of the news. Did the game lead it? Nothing else happened in the world, surely!

But the All Black team was named!!!

Watched the game early hours of this morning and watched the replay at lunchtime to make sure that I had not dreamed it.
We seem to have got the tactics right but still think we played better against Oz.
I don't take too much out of friendly matches as usually players don't get stuck in (apart from Vince G)
I have watched about 4 WC warm up games this week end and none of the teams gave it 100%.
The only true test is our first group game.
I am hoping that because of the last 2 games the confidence will be high, as you need that to succeed.

Exactly. The reason why we are performing well is because the players are confident and believe in themselves. Makes a change from the "park the bus" and "hit and hope" long balls that have been our tactics in the past, and are indicative of a team who don't back themselves.

Great result,

Hopefully now more people will take us seriously and clubs will look at our players.

Id rather have our players playing in top teams and having a good go at there careers. Rather then staying with the NIX. Even though I love the nix

Lose a couple, gain Barron and Clapham (or Spragg and Prattley) or Moss back.

It's what we should be doing.

Well. I first had a bit of a fail when my 'nap' extended for a bit longer than I'd anticipated - and missed watching the game live. Woke up around 7am, and thankfully managed to see the replay on SS2.

Great goal from Smeltzy, and great confidence-booster for the World Cup, especially pleased that we managed to hold out when things were getting tough in the second half. Great stuff.

Serbs were exactly waht I thought they'd be - entered the game not overly pumped up, thinking it's gonna be easy for them. When things started going badly, they started panicking, and consequently failed to expose the gap in quality we have in comparison to them.

As for the Serb fans - well, unsurprising. But a lot of lols though.

I know the feeling re Murray D, but I guess you have to put it into perspective. If you go to most places on this planet football is the number 1 game. In NZ it is rugby. The biggest difference is that NZ don't promote their sports teams( apart from the AB) Having spent most of my life in NZ and seeing the medias delibereate surpression of football I was amazed that in Oz all sports get a fair coverage. If football is doing well(including womwn) then they get first mention on the news.
This is unlike the dorks in NZ that think that rugby is the worlds most popular sport.
But in saying that I guess if you were a rugby mad follower in the UK, all you would would get is football, football and football.
If the weather was the same as Qld I might move over.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

Agree 100%.

There is a 100% deliberate attempt by the media to play down success in any sporting code that they deemed to be in competition or a threat to Rugby Union.

Thats why sports such as lawn bowls, boat racing, down hill mountain running get a ton of coverage.

While NZ success at Football, basketball, League get downplayed and sports such as Ice Hockey and  Baseball are brushed off as USA sports.

Telfer, Deaker, Ramanos, Miriams and now this new generation of Journos are just carrying on this pathetic traditional.

Laugh all you like mate, just wait  a week out till the world cup, its going to be wall to wall LOMU in the media, with the same made up stories they use every year.

Yea, that Kidney failure was made up

I love football and want it to get the coverage it deserves. But Dear God, please, stop with the ridiculous conspiracy theories.

I can't believe some of you are still persisting with all this media conspiracy theory rubbish.
It's rather tedious and simply not true. I work for a major news organisation and I can safely say most journos are sick of rugby and are desperate for something else. If you have actually picked up papers during the past 6 months, you will see football has been getting a magnificent run, especially around significant stories liek World Cup and Phoenix.
Most major media outlets are sending teams of journos/photographers etc to the World Cup and spending thousands and thousands of dollars on coverage. They are not going to ignore it then, are they? Stuff has a World Cup mini site! I don't see a rugby mini site at the moment.
Sure, some media still ignore football - I cringed when I heard Deaks lead off today - but don't lump everyone in the same basket.
With regards TV, I don't consider them independent anyway because they always cover sports they have the rights to (netball, yachting etc on TV 1 and motorsport on TV3).
I also laugh at the guy who said the NZ media is crap for football and he gets all his stuff from YF. Now YF is a wonderful, wonderful website, but does he not realise the NZ media probably supplies more than 50 per cent of the football stories on the front page???
Can't wait for the World Cup. What a fantastic result today.

This.

Sure there are still Saville's and McKay's but for every one of them there is a Stanaway or a Gourdie.  This never used to be the case.

Closer to 70%

Think you need to rethink the media in OZ leggy.Visit melbourne during winter and you would be forgiven for thinking that there was only one sport played.Over the years i have had to my misfortune spend much time in Newcastle and there its all about league.

Think some of you are still a bit paranoid about footballs coverage, cast your minds back only four years and what we have today is 100% better. As good as the result was it was after all just a friendly and to see TV3 leading with it was outstanding.

GET YOUR SHIRTS OFF FOR THE BOYS

But it was a historic result. Even if you weren't necessarily into football.

What's with the whole "friendly" tag anyway?

In rugby such a game would still have had Test status right? Even if it was some midweek clash? Or am I wrong there.

Dont even bother with One news mate, theyre sh*t house. 3 news had the AWs as their headline story bang on 6pm before anything else. Then it was Andy Haden talking about darkies...

Still fizzing over that result.....I have had heaps of emails from ex work mates round the globe. all saying well done NZ. This result has made many people sit up and take notice.

Agreed on the comments about Aw players getting picked up by bigger clubs. This is the world showcase.

The last two games I have been really impressed by Fallon. He has dominated in the air in both games. tommy Smith looks a cool customer. Reid has heaps of ability. Wood was Ok too. Unbelivable we have all these good youngsters coming through

Only bummer about the whole experiance was Sky TV. We had a AW"s diner....heaps of people stayed over....bodies all over the house. Set the alarm for 5.30 to watch the replay.
Got all the kids up. We were all ready sitting waiting at 6am....the advertised time for the replay......what did we get. Hour and a half of grunting tennis players.
There were many four letter words hurled at Sky's direction

Sky treat their customers like sh*t....anyone got an email address we can complain to? tried ringing and got some call centre idiot.

I have been reading bad translations of Serbian news reports for fun. Mostly the fun comes from trying to work on earth they are on about (Smeltz is apparently our "leading car", while Vidic calmed the crowd by talking about throwing kittens into the water). Generally the Serbs focus on their team (naturally), but there was a lot of praise for the way Smeltzy took his goal - and one report said our boys were "Insufficiently trained technically, but powerful and highly disciplined." After the match their coach praised the All Whites and said that they "played with a special inspiration".

This comment also caught my eye:

Matches in Klagenfurt yesterday was accompanied by a large number of European scouts. In the stands ... were more than 40 clubs from the Old Continent.

If you use twitter, just complain directly to SKYNZ if many people publicly say 'oi @SKYNZ stop messing with the Football' or words to that effect everytime they put off the All Whites or Phoenix for Golf and Tennis they'll find it a lot harder to ignore than a few emails that no-one else gets to see.

Well, there is bashing going on here but since I'm taking it as a request from you I'll repost it

I don't even work for the news department so it's no skin off my nose what you all think of the 6pm bulletin but it seems in many cases that people are bashing the news without even having a look.

Edit: Actually I won't since others have made the same point about the sports news and fair play to TV3 for putting it right at the top of the News itself.
Now as long as they never lead with a tiny pop singer visiting the country again they'll be going well. Plus it'd be pointless me really going 'us vs them' as 1) I don't work for the news department 2) It's plain to see that Gourdie does do a great job. (See you at the next TVNZ VS TV3 Football game if you're reading)

Great result! No way the best result for the AW's ever, but up there.

Boxhead, you where right, Serbia played like retards. Murphy's law being what its is, even though you where wrong in what you said, you where right in how they played so I put a lazy $50 on a one zip result. Thanks. Know any Slovenians? Lol.

In that case how the hell did you miss it? The first sentence out of Saville's Mouth was "The All Blacks team was named today but first a massive result for the All Whites (que highlights)

Is your attention span really that short that you looked away after six words?

It's not uncommon for the News to do a short preview of an upcoming story in that fashion.

I'm not the only person with a laptop and wireless in this digital day and age. Occasionally the bachelor can use such technology for more than internet porn.
It can also be useful for preventing fruitless trips to the lounge on cold mornings (although not in this case)
Yes, but in bed........... what was that about internet porn?

Lazy Sunday, I am not getting out of bed just to argue on here. I don't get up until I have something to do/ something to watch.

Next step, TV in my room (big screen porn innit)

Stick to match here, media whining above.
.
.
oh, right - great game, altho' on my fuzzy internet video stream I spent the first five minutes supporting the Serbs ..... what's that all about then? The Serbs dress as All Whites and the All Whites dress as All Blacks - bit hard to take in at 3am in the morning.
Ajnyways. the early part of the game was interesting with the AW long passes being way off target - was that due to the altitude and mis-judging the effect on flighting the ball?
Play seemed to settle down when the AW's changed to the short passing game.
And pass of the match has to go to Reid (/Read?) whose briliantly weighted ball led to the Smeltz goal.
Overall, it was really brilliant to support a team that came across as confident and capable of footing it on the world stage.
And just as the '82 world cup led to Rufer's establishment with a big European club, I'm sure the same will happen for a lot of the 2010 AW players

Good to see Smelt scoring again, hopefully fallon can start putting them in the back of the net, hes had two close chances in two games.
