Well I don't really like the 3-4-3 anyway, however because of injuries we don't really have a left back and no recognised right back so I don't see the point of changing it for these games. Whether we have two wings capable of playing in the style the 3-4-3 demands depends whether you trust Fitzgerald. I've only seen him for the cameo at the end of the China game but was quite impressed. I genuinely think he could be a starter for the WC qualifiers but need to test him out before that. Due to injuries this is the perfect time to do so.

This is the team I would like to see

                    Moss

   Sigmund     Reid     Boxall/Vicelich

Fitzgerald  Brown Elliot   Brockie

            McGee
  Smeltz            Kosta

McG was our most effective attack in the game against Waitak...coming from the left.

Also lack of targets in the box...only Siggie and Smeltz with presence there and the crosses didn't find them until late in the first half.

I wasn't at the game and there was no coverage but Ricki said McGinchy was playing in the front 3 with Smeltz and Kosta. Playing him as a wing in a 3-4-3 will burden him with a lot of defensive duties when he is our most creative attacking player. I just don't see the purpose in that. As for his exact position in the front 3 I think he is better suited to a central and slightly deeper role. Basically the classic CAM.

I do acknowledge that leaving out Killen and Wood is a big loss of height but I think we will get a lot more possession having more mobile players on the field and playing to feet.

New Zealand Football: Herbert gives young guns starts against Mexico

May 31, 2011

DENVER, USA All Whites coach Ricki Herbert has handed Michael Boxall and Michael Fitzgerald their first starts in naming his line up for an international against Mexico on Thursday (NZT).

The pair made their debuts from the bench against China in March and now get their first run-on appearances on the flanks of a four man midfield at Denvers Invesco Field.

Fitzgerald will play on the left hand side after performing a similar role on the right as a second half substitute against China, while Boxall lines up on the opposite flank.

Normally a right-sided central defender but capable of playing full back as he did occasionally for the 2008 Olympic team, Boxall wasnt fazed about adapting to the wing-back cum midfielder role.

Its always a big honour to get your first start for your national team and to be honest I dont really care what position it is, Boxall said.

Im just going to go out there and do the best I can. Im sure good things will come from it. I have faith in my team mates and they have faith in me and well just go out there and do a job.

Kosta Barbarouses wins his third cap in a front three combination featuring Shane Smeltz and Barbarouses former New Zealand U-17 team mate Chris Wood.

Tim Brown is expected to captain the side from central midfield, where he will partner Simon Elliott, while New Zealands most capped player Ivan Vicelich anchors a defensive three with Winston Reid and Andrew Boyens outside him. Goalkeeper Glen Moss wins his 18th cap.

Despite a long list of injuries, the All Whites have the luxury of firepower on the bench with Chris Killen, Michael McGlinchey and Jeremy Brockie among the substitutes as New Zealand coach Ricki Herbert keeps some powder dry to balance the demands of two internationals in three days on different sides of the world.

The group is quite depleted. Its probably the most difficult position weve been in terms of players missing. But Michael Fitzgerald and Michael Boxall come straight into the side and Kosta starts.

As weve said before we left New Zealand, the priority is to give these players exposure at this level, and they are going to get it.

We know a lot about Chris [Killen] and Jeremy [Brockie] and were starting to know a little bit more about Michael [McGlinchey]. Those three will probably play a more major role in the Australia game on Sunday.

Somewhere along the line, Michael Boxall needs exposure at this level and Michael Fitzgerald the same, while Kosta adds an exciting element.

Midfielder Craig Henderson is struggling with a hamstring strain and is not available for selection.

The match will be broadcast live on Sky Sport 1 at 2pm, Thursday (NZT).

3-5-2 or 343?

Kosta in the mids? McG in the mids?

Kosta, Wood and Smeltz could produce some interesting football. It also seems like a team capable of playing route one- Elliot to Wood, as well as a team that can move the ball on the deck or dribble...

Well lads its going to be a hot one in Denver tomorrow, high of 28C with a game starting temperature of 24C.....looking forward to seeing how the line up will compare to the one preformed in LA last year.

....on a random note.... I was in the barber shop in downtown Denver getting a buzz cut when no other than 'Naked and Famous' came on over the sound system. A good Omen? I said Yes!!!

There'll be a small pocket of support for the All Whites when they take on Mexico in front of around 50,000 in Denver tomorrow.

An expat Kiwi has rounded up some mates to don white shirts in support of New Zealand.

Geoff McPherson says there'll be a couple of hundred of them and not all are Kiwis.

He says there are going to be a lot of British expats and a few Americans too, who will cheer them on.

All Whites coach Ricki Herbert is due to name his playing squad today.

Not sure about Boxall playing wingback - i'd like a player with maybe a little more technical ability than physical presence.

Surprised Brockie not playin there.

Henderson also unavailable with injury... not surprised by that, he shouldn't of been picked until he proven his fitness. Its a wasted spot on him, especially now with some many other injuries. Really could have done with an extra (fit) player

Maybe Brockie being kept for the Socceroos match?

Good to see the young guys being put out against the tougher opposition, and our A squad being targeted for the Convicts

But who would we have picked? so many injuries at the moment. At least Ricki had the chance to see him in training.

I was meant to take 2 hours off work and watch it live but thanks to people not showing up I will have to work the whole shift and will record it on the box. I really hope it works, the last couple of times I set it to record a program, it recorded something else! I'd be pisssssed if that happens!

If he has an injury he wont be showing much at training

Hogg has potential and has done well when given the chance against higher opposition (universally dislike though).

Luke Rowe would be another option. I also would have like to have seen a couple over u20 players maybe taken along that have obvious potential.

Hey Geoff

Just want to acknowledge you for all the hard work you have done in getting the trip to denver organised. I really wish I had been able to go but I can still see the hard work and dedication you have put into this event.

Cheers,
Tim

Herbert's line up choice actually boggles my mind. He says he has to put Boxall traditionally a centre back into midfield because of injuries. While there are injuries a formation change can fix this problem very easily. After seeing this lineup I would struggle to call it a 3-4-3 and more call it a 5-4-1. I can't see Boxall marauding up the side to often.

I don't know enough about him to say whether Boxall will get forward much or not, but for a young guy in his first start I would have thought it be a bit fairer to play him in his natural position. And putting him on the right means Fitzgerald has to move to the left and so the same problem happens with another player. I am really pleased to see these two guys getting the start because they both did well when coming on against China, but I would have preferred to see them slotted in in more familiar roles.

Remember the first time Reid played and Herbert put him in right midfield and he flopped. I remember hearing something along the lines of Herbert not wanting to use Reid and Nelson lobbying for Reid over Sigmund, may be wrong though. Playing inexperienced players out of position is dangerous but after reading the article that Ricky is trying to prevent a Mexican rout I think he is just playing 5 defenders but avoiding saying it to look bad. What annoys me is that 3-4-3 is designed to be quite a defensive formation yet he employs it against teams like Honduras and China and that is why we are having to settle with draws.

I don't think a 3-4-3 is defensive (although Eilliot does tend to play very deep) so long as it isn't really a 5-4-1 or a 5-2-3. It tends to leave a lot of space down the flanks when the opposition break quickly and thats my big issue with it. I thought it was brilliant against Bahrain at the time because we couldn't reliably transition the ball through the midfield and so a more direct route to our strikers, who were much bigger than the opposition, was actually a better tactic. It was high risk but against better opposition you need to take claculated risks. We also didn't have a right back of acceptable quality so the formation allowed us to play all our best players. I think we are better than this now though. And particularly against the other Oceania teams I don't want to take risks by leaving that much space for their quick strikers on the break. rjmiller2011-06-02 10:34:26

It really depends if it is two attacking wingers in midfield it is really attacking if has two defenders there (most common) it is really defensive.

3-4-3 defensive? I've always heard it touted as a very attacking formation.

Anyway.. damn the timing of the game.. have to duck out t get kids, and will probably miss part of the second half..
