USA extradition requests to Swiss.

Blatter didnt come to NZ and is not going to Canada. Extradition treaties by both with the US any coincidence?

You mean just like Switzerland does?

I would expect it would be easier to get him from Canada or NZ (kimdotcom not withstanding) than Switzerland. It is a very lengthy process from Switzerland.

A clear cut case of racketering or whatever, with lots of precedents, and a properly executed arrest is much better than a marginal test case with large amounts of law enforcement over-reach

First time Blatter's been terrified by the sight of money being thrown his way.

Visa CEO now saying that Blatter has to go.

I wonder at what point the sponsors will consider withdrawing their cash? It could actually be a shrewd move - positive publicity (at least in the wealthy parts of the world) from not spending money.

Latest news:

Over the weekend, the newly-named head of FIFA's latest "Reform Committee" (if you're keeping track at home, this will be the fourth such committee since 2011) a 77 year old (of course) Swiss (of course) lawyer (of course) named Francois Carrard delivered this summary of the situation:

“For the US football – soccer – does not bear the same weight as baseball, basketball and American football. There, it’s just an ethnic sport for schoolgirls . . . in addition, the case involves only a few rogue members of the FIFA executive committee.”

He then added that in his opinion, Sepp Blatter "has been treated unfairly".

This is the "independent" person who has been appointed by Sepp Blatter to preside over an 11 member committee entirely appointed by Sepp Blatter (one from each of the Confederations and five other FIFA lickspittles) to examine what went wrong with FIFA under the leadership of Sepp Blatter.

I don't know about you, but I feel better already.

I do take some comfort in the fact that the other "Committee" doing the investigation is the FBI

Swiss Attorney General investigating Blatter

Swiss authorities have opened criminal proceedings against Sepp Blatter in a dramatic escalation of the corruption crisis engulfing football’s ruling body, Fifa.

Uefa president Michel Platini – the former European footballer of the year who was once Blatter’s protege but has latterly turned on him and was favourite to replace the Swiss as Fifa president – was also dragged into the web of allegations engulfing the organisation. Investigations centre on a payment of 2m Swiss francs (£1.35m) made to Platini in 2011.

After arriving to question Blatter at Fifa’s opulent Zurich HQ and seizing his computer, the office of the Swiss attorney general said it had opened proceedings against him “on suspicion of criminal mismanagement” and “suspicion of misappropriation”.

Platini, who is lobbying to replace Blatter when he stands down in February, was questioned “as a person asked to provide information” in connection with claims that he received a “disloyal payment” from the Fifa president.

I like the bit about how Blatter's lawyers have advised him not to go overseas.

Yeah it does not look good. I see there are calls for Kofi Anan or Helen Clark to run it. They would be too smart to get involved in the quagmire.

It does make the position that NZF took in voting for Blatter look like a 'told you so' move within OFC.

One of those 2 running the shop would make sense as an attempt to right the ship, so to speak, and regain credibility for the organisation. Would the rest of the fish heads in FIFA accept that though? would need the serious backing of the big sponsors of the organisation to force it through perhaps.

Agree. The problem is that from the outside, FIFA looks like such a basketcase that if you want to lose a good reputation, then go run FIFA. I kinda wonder why so many people are lining up to take charge of such a clusterfudge organisation that if this was an NZ government department, quality candidates would run a mile away. It can only be the prestige or baubles of office.

Nah, he's not going anywhere unless it's in handcuffs. I don't even think he'll follow through with his pledge to step down and allow another round of presidential voting - he'll go back on it and say some bs about how FIFA needs him at the helm to implement reforms and increase it's transparency or something.

Sounds like it's all happening and coming crashing down for Blatter!

@NewstalkZB: Sepp Blatter is believed to have been provisionally suspended by FIFA's ethics committee.

@Tim_Roehn: Ok, more exclusive news: Investigators of #FIFA ethics committee demand suspension of #UEFA boss Michel #Platini as well!

Does anyone know???? This payment that Blatter made to Platini of 2m was based on a verbal agreement [which is legal under Swiss law] but there must have been a paper trail of the payment from the FIFA coffers to Platini if it was a legitimate payment. Has anyone read anything of the investigation and if this was raised? How does someone like Blatter use 2m of FIFA funds for a payment [for anything] without some form of paper trail?

So the Panama papers are showing more corruption and bribery in FIFA. Surprise, surprise.

Also saw this article, which could potentially add to the shambles around Qatar 2022:
