What do you do if everyone applies though?  Taking away the issue of if players should pay or not there will be some players who can easily afford it and some at the other end of the scale who can't - then there will be some in the middle who just don't want to pay.

Having spoken to a former NZF staffer  - i asked him from his point of view if he thought the policy was because NZF couldn't afford to fund proper world cup/qualifying preparation or if it was a philosophical call - he indicated the former.  and he confirmed that the costs of running a team per year were roughly (100k per year with no major tournament and 300k per year with a major tournament).  excluding the main two teams of course.

I am of the opinion that if NZF really can't afford it then while this isn't the most ideal scenario then this is a required evil!

Two Wellington boys from the squad applied for  funding with NZ Football foundation to cover the costs of their trips to Auckland to be with the squad. The costs were over $2k per player. NZ FF granted them $500 each.
Don't think applying again would help too much.

How long has Colin Margison been out of NZF Chopah?

They can afford it if they want to and cut the troughers out. They don't want to. As was commented on earlier, how many people were in CHR for the Chatham Cup on NZFs dime that did not need to be?

No you haven't Chopah, but as has been stated by others, when you talk about the amount being asked for and doing some really basic maths lets say 2 (17s and 20s) teams of 22 players each (44 players) @ $2k each ($88k) and thats for a 2 year cycle making it $44k a year - lets call it $50k, that they cannot find that in their budget somewhere????

They make not be able to afford much, but lets not take the piss and say out of $10m annual revenue, they cannot find $50k for these kids. That's 0.5% of revenue.....

you know, my mind keeps flashing back to that incident at the asb prem final at fred taylor when NZF kicked the curtain raiser kids out of the clubrooms with a can of fizz, while they reserved the only indoor area for 'dignitaries'

for me, it highlighted both an arrogance and an incompetence which has since been proven with their mishandling of just about everything since

it sounds like there were a fair few of them in chch on a junket too, and for what reason?

after reading what the various experts have had to say here, i reckon there's a bit to be excited about with this team

when you consider that we generally aren't shit yet at this age, i'm hoping that this is one of our better teams

BTW, is rufer the goods or what?!?!

The days of youth international tournaments as key scouting grounds aren't quite gone, but they aren't what they used to be. So I wouldn't expect too much.

This is another thing NZF should be doing proactively by the way - taking an active role in trying to find these kids jobs playing the game for a living. But that's a topic for another time.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Was lucky enough to see the U17 game vs ACFC yesterday. There are some quality players in that U17 group - unlucky not to pinch the win yesterday when Judd Baker hit the post late on.

ACFC a bit wasteful in first half and should have gone in at the break 2 goals up. Hard to read too much into game as both sides hesitant in the tackle - pretty understandable when the U17s about to get on a plane and head to the World Cup.

This U17 side certainly not lacking potential and looking forward to watching them take on the big guns in UAE next week.

Best player on the park IMO was a toss up between old man Mario Bilen and young gun Sam Burfoot.

Another major fail for NZ Football.  Communication came out on Saturday advising there was the World Cup jersey presentation for the team after the game.  So the forgotten few (the out of towners) had no chance of getting to Auckland to see their sons get their shirts.

A few parents made a massive 24 hour road trip to get there in time, but most other out of town parents will wait for the photos to come out.

Huge moment for the parents, all of the Auckland parents were there, a bit of notice would've been nice to let the others at least have a chance to share this with their kids.

First I heard about any presentation was from another spectator when I was at the game yesterday.  Was that communication about shirt presentation just sent to parents ?

Certainly sounds like NZF needs to up their game in regards to communication - both to players & families, and also to the general public.

Do NZF actually have a communication policy/plan and someone responsible for communication ? Has anyone told them (in a constructive way) that they are consistently 'dropping the ball' on this ?

Young All Whites begin preparation for FIFA U-17 World Cup

12 October, 2013

AUCKLAND – The Young All Whites squad have arrived in UAE to begin preparations for their opening game of the FIFA U-17 World Cup against Uruguay on 17 October (local time).

Fresh from two confidence boosting performances against Waitakere United and Auckland City the team arrived in UAE this week and will play hosts United Arab Emirates U-17 on Saturday in the final warm up game before the tournament kicks off.

The Young All Whites defeated Waitakere United 2-1 with goals from Judd Baker and Michael Den Heijer before signing off on their domestic preparations with a 1-1 draw with Oceania Champions League winners Auckland City, with Alex Rufer on the scoresheet with a fantastic free kick.

After drawing 2-2 with a local UAE team coach Darren Bazeley will further refine his team in the training camp and in the final warm up game against UAE U-17s on Saturday 12 October.

The Young All Whites’ build up to the FIFA U-17 World Cup UAE was made possible through a funding grant from Pegasus Sports Foundation, enabling coach Bazeley to prepare the squad in the best way possible before the start of the tournament.

New Zealand Football’s Interim Chief Executive Mark Aspden welcomed the grant from The Pegasus Sports Foundation and the assistance it has provided to the Young All Whites and its players in the build up to the tournament.

“We are extremely grateful to the Pegasus Sports Foundation for this funding that provides a boost for our Young All Whites in the build up to the FIFA U-17 World Cup,” said Aspden.

“The funding has enabled the team to prepare effectively for the tournament through training camps and warm up games.”

The Pegasus Sports Foundation provides funding to clubs and non-profit sporting organisations that are of benefit to the community and not for personal or commercial gain.

Brian Corbett, Executive Director of the Pegasus Sports Foundation commented; “We are committed to assisting sports teams throughout the communities in which we operate and also to assist national teams to compete at the highest level where appropriate. We are delighted to assist the NZ U-17’s in preparation for the World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. “

“We would also take this opportunity to wish the team well at the World Cup as this level of completion is vital to improve player experience against highly ranked football nations. “

The Young All Whites have been one of New Zealand's most consistent sides at international level in recent teams having advanced from the group stage in consecutive tournaments in 2009 and 2011.

The latest installment of the FIFA U-17 World Cup will be held from 17 October to 8 November across six venues in the UAE.  New Zealand will play Uruguay in Ras Al-Khamaih on October 17 followed by Italy at the same venue on October 20. Our lads lost 1:0 to UAE. Don't know many details, just that the ref was terribly biased, awarded a penalty to UAE 5 mins before the end and he didn't award us a penalty earlier in the game. We created a few chances too.
Probably not too bad knowing that UAE drew 2:2 with Argentina recently.

True...

I wasn't there. Had an email from one of the U17 parents. It is his son that said all these things about the game. I have no idea if the ref's decisions were right or wrong.  Same as you, I would like to see some footage.

Not 100% sure what you're getting at Metal. I tend to think of private academies as youth finishing schools and if a player feels he wants to do that, fine - hence, Rufer, Tuiloma spent some time doing just that. All feds run FTC/NTC 'academies' up to 16; not all players are in that programme; some may or may not be in private academies.

As to Chch at 2013 U17 level; one Cantab made 2013 NZ secondary schools team to UK; a couple went to this year's Milk Cup with the Otago team; Burnley academy are not getting best quality players (only out of town kids north and south of Chch) and APFA at 2013 U17 level have only 2 Chch lads - one who missed getting a trial and one who never was going  to get one; the rest were/are in club/FTC/NTC. My point is that on a pro rata population basis - on average - you would expect 4-6 Sth Island/Chch kids in any given national squad. This year was one and last world cup was 2 (I think). Just seems a bit under-represented and doesn't seem to happen with the girls.

Some dodgy maths there. Christchurch's population is less than 10% of the country's (~350k on ~4.5m) so in a 23 man squad you'd expect about 2 from Chch on average. This year one and last time two is probably about right.

Expanding that calculation to include the entire South Island you'd expect about 20% of the squad (5 or so players) to be southern, but there are lots of reasons that might not happen, two of which are:

- Kids in the country don't get the same football development opportunities as kids in the city, so a majority of the south island is likely to contribute very little to the legions of decent footballers.

Well, although most of your stats are okay (except that it's more useful to consider the Canterbury region pop. of 559,000 rather than just urban Christchurch's 376,000 since distances in Canterbury are not large and talented kids commute to Christchurch to play) - and remember, despite the earthquakes, Christchurch is still the country's second biggest city.

However, it's simply not true that "the majority of the south island" live in the country.

The reality is that about 604,000 of the South Island pop of 1.04 million live in just four cities - Chch, Dunedin, Invercargill and Nelson,

Another approx. 120,000 live in the next seven largest towns (and kids in smaller towns like Blenheim and Timaru are certainly identified at age group level, whist a town like Rangiora is only 30 mins drive from Chch and kids commute).

So that's 724,000 of the South Island pop of 1.04 million - not far off 75 % living in cities and towns where they certainly get identified by the federation youth coaches.

In the past, I can remember in the 1980's not many South Islanders featured in NZ youth sides, although there was a golden generation of young South Islanders in the mid to late 1970's in NZ youth teams who went on to play for the All Whites e.g. Kenny Cresswell, Richard Wilson, Johan Verweij, Glen Adam, Richard Mulligan, Mark McNaughton.

In the 1980's usually only about two South Islanders per side e.g. Ceri Evans and Paul Brydon here v AFC Bournemouth 1982:

03/06/1982, Wanganui, Cooks Gardens, 1500 NEW ZEALAND U-19 0 AFC BOURNEMOUTH 5 (Milton Graham 2, Howard Goddard, Derek Dawkins, Ian Leigh) New Zealand U-19: David van Vorst, David Burgess, Ceri Evans [c], Martin Felton, Erle Fitzgerald, Matthew Cantwell, Fred de Jong, John Denham, Mark Cossey, Paul Brydon, Colin Tuaa. AFC Bournemouth: n/a Referee: Don Ratchford (Wanganui). Notes: Simon Millichip, Karl Bauerfeind, David Fagaloa and Matthew Walker came on as substitutes for the New Zealand U-19 team. The New Zealand U-19 team was coached by Allan Jones and Doug Moore (assistant).

So, not much has changed...

When you look at a comprehensive list of All Whites from over the years, a lot have been South Islanders, though it would take a lot of effort to sort out what percentage. Some of the prominent South Islanders on the list like Mike McGarry were never selected to play age group football for NZ.

YOUNG ALL WHITES SUFFER NARROW DEFEAT IN FINAL WARM-UP:The Young All Whites suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to UAE U-17 in their final warm up game before they begin their FIFA U-17 World Cup UAE campaign

AUCKLAND – The Young All Whites suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to UAE U-17 in a closed match earlier this morning in their final warm up game before they begin their FIFA U-17 World Cup UAE campaign against Uruguay on Friday.

The game was heading towards a respectable draw before hosts UAE were awarded a soft penalty which was converted by Mohammed Suleiman Al Akbari in the 84th minute, leaving the Young All Whites little time to grab a deserved equaliser.

Really looking forward to this. Just seems to be some real quality coming out of NZ at the moment in terms of youth.

Heard yesterday that two boys from Hamilton boys High are off to England having signed youth contracts at Torquay. Only League 2, but still getting across and in an environnmet where its easier to get noticed.

Yep has been confirmed for a couple of weeks. One of them, Dom Edwards, was going to play for the NZ U20's in the ASPB this year, which makes it a kind of weird decision to go play for a League Two youth side. He's a quality player though who should do well, the other lad not so much.

Maybe this way he gets the both of best worlds. Will still be considered for the u20's and might get noticed or move towards first team action there.

South Island could only claim one player - Cory Brown - and he's at Ole.

The mainland has 25% of the population and only 5% of the places in the squad.

It's tough being a footballer from the Mainland when national coaches are in Auckland. Who was the last national coach from the South Island?

Bazeley said on the podcast that they trialled over a 100 players across the country for the campaign

What a joke. He never saw South Island FTC/NTC players play against equivalent Nth Islanders. And I'm not a parent/coach of a kid in the agegroup.

He did see and note names of those Sth Island players who played in ACFC's national Under-17 club tournament last Easter.
