Is sunny days Joel? Can't imagine anyone having those sort of states at hand for a player who is  not well known... Or you a 14 year old girl with personal boundary issues maybe.

Here's hoping the team put it together for the comp and get us to the cup so we can have all these  arguements again when that team is picked.

It's interesting that the Wellington based players are slagged by the Wellington people, everyone is slagged by the Auckland people, and  some people just make up lies.

I hadn't seen anyone slag Stevens but I can make some guesses who might have.

I spoke with Milicich a couple of years ago about Watson at the Napier tournament. He basically was a player he had tagged because at that age group level, he could dominate (because of size) and he had put in a bit of work in getting in shape.

I've not seen him play this year but the highlights and what I know of him, he's probably not far off maxing out his potential.

Watson, who I've been critical of from time to time, was an absolute weapon at U19s, and in Central League last season. Averaged a goal a game in Central League. He'll suit the 20s style of play down to the ground I reckon.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Does anyone know if Tom Spragg is in this age group? I've lost track of him but I think he might be a 1993 kid. He is/was decent when he was here for the YF Youth Scholarship (RIP).

He is. Remember seeing him play as a 15-year old in a Phoenix pre-season game, he was outstanding. Really rated him, but seems injuries have knocked him around a bit.

Joel Stevens is quality! We are talking about a 17yo scoring 3 times in 7 games for the least prolific team in the ASBP, team of the month for December. Goals against Canterbury, Waitakere and Wellington. Had he not injured the shoulder he would have finished with more goals than Watson, Turner and all the other young forwards in the comp.

I dont think any one is bemoaning the fact that Joel has been picked. There definitly is a lot of support for Joel. GI has a very good setup for Juniors, it must be a proud moment for all the hard work these volunteers do when one of there own is picked at National representative level.

Don't share the extreme negative response to this squad of some on this thread - believe there is enough talent there to get through the qualifiers.

Granted there are no strikers named who stand out as major talents at this stage in their careers.

But with six players already at pro clubs and some of them already playing first team football, that gives a solid core that must inspire some hope (Howieson, Adams, Fenton, Boyd, Crocombe, Roux) - plus Tuiloma will soon apparently either be at LA Galaxy or a club in Europe if they like him during current trials.

Met some visitors from Oxford in the UK who said Crocombe is highly-rated by the club and supporters and is a "tall bugger" - about the tallest player they've ever seen at the club (6' 4" apparently)

Be interested to know out of those strikers, apart from Watson, how many goals have the others scored this season. The guy that only plays youth league surely must have scored a bucket load! ......... Not even in an ASB prem team squad of 24??

Watsons got 8. Highams ended on 0 i think. thomas left waikato early on in the season. boyd 0. not sure on van elia. turner 6 and ASB youth league golden boot (so far) stephen carmichael not included. baffling

Dan Grimshaw equal highest goal scorer in the ASB Youth League scored all his goals in one game, does that make him the best striker in the league? Definitely not.

Your post really does show your bias. Boyd may not have a left foot, but he is a better footballer than Boyd by some margin. You'd probably be in a small minority that don't think Boyd is better than Turner. The fact that Boyd plays A League is not a relative argument that he is a better footballer however just watching the 2 of them, it becomes apparent rather quickly.

I must have missed something there. Not comparing Turner and Boyd. They are different types of players. Boyds the type that plays off a big frontman or wide. I can't see how you can pick a youth league player who hasn't been playing in the ASB prem. The youth league is a poor standard. I actually think Boyd is a good player. Pre season Greenacre said he was a natural goalscorer. Well hes not and even Declan has said that. JV, you seem to slag alot of players working hard to do well. You obviously have something against Turner by the sound of it. I heard Waitakere have signed him for the O League. I suppose your reply will be "the others that have scored zip weren't available lol!

I do slag off players that are well overrated. Tell me about Rory's career and what he had achieved..

Nothing wrong with him signing at Waitakere. Every team needs training ground fodder.

im simply saying there is hardly daylight between them. boyds struggled in the a league and no doubt turner would have the same issues.

i just wouldn't have left out a guy scoring goals in the asb prem on a regular basis who is actually a natural goal scorer.

Well I can agree with you that the difference is not completely day light. Boyd looks a lot better balanced and composed on the ball and glides through the game a lot better. I find Turner to be quite a lazy footballer (just to show I am not slagging players off without reason)

Tell me about the strikers picked careers and what they have achieved?? That's what the point is.At 18 years old your CV is not going to be that huge if you are playing in NZ is it. So what has Van Elia, Higham, Stevens. Watson etc achieved. Your the man JV, come on tell me?

I'm just a football fanatic that watches the game as much as I can. I support Waitak in the summer and Birko in the winter. To me, there is alot of young guys working hard and doing well. I watch Waitak train sometimes and Turner is definitely not lazy there. Same with Jordan Vale,(now at Auk) he has a great attitude and work ethic. Personally I would have him ahead of Edge but I still think Edge is a good player and has some strengths. I also watched the 20s play  7 aside tourney style games at the latest camp. I can tell you Milly put all the Welly boys in one team. Turner, Carmichael and Vale were in another team and their team beat the Welly boys 3-0. Turner 2 Carmichael 1. I thought then Milly favoured the Welly boys. When the Phoenix Ressies played Waitak he was on the Phoenix bench. Go figure! I just hope they do well in the qualifiers.
