I hate to say this but in my opinion they will not qualify from this tournament! The Phoenix boys are simply not up to it! Alec Solomons is a trier but so far out of his depth its hard to understand how hes got where he has to this day. Tom Biss has had one good game in 12 months. Justin Gulley i wont comment on because id be here all night.

Chris Milicich is telling us there is not a better player out there than Jesse Edge? he is as mobile as a stone house.

They are really going to have to rely on good finishing up top where there is actually some quality. Overseas players like Cameron Howieson and Luke Adams have to really drive this side.

I hope they prove me wrong but i can see another Islands disaster on the cards.

i actually think its a helluva lot stronger than the side 2 years ago but i think guys like gulley, edge, stevens, higham and van elia might not be there come turkey with tim payne and likes of turner, ken yamamoto, dylan stansfield and possibly rhys jordan actually being brought in.

well they wont get the chance to come in if they don't qualify will they. Ok Gould gave those boys a crack but hey he didnt pick this U20s side. Think Milicich is shooting himself in the foot big time. However il be first to put my hand up if im proven wrong.

got any suggestions though on who he should've picked?

Hogg.

You guys make me laugh... They must be doing something right to get selected in the under20s, Phoenix, passed age group sides etc etc

Tad naive mate. People still play favourites. The best kids/young players arent always selected. Politics etc. It has improved in recent years years with the advent of youth league etc

I remember being a part of a selection team which beat the 1999 under 17 side 4-0 prior to the world cup and we were their age and not "good enough"

Its more to do with the way the coaches want to play.. like last time chettleburgh or however you spell his name missed out because he didnt fit the style of play

Permalink Permalink

What did he say, I actually like to pass the ball and have possession, not simply kick it to the other team and chase.

Not a fan of Milicich and can see us playing quite a direct style of football. I hope not, but wouldn't be surprised. Watson of top and a pacy striker off him. Similar to Woods and Barbarouses I guess.

I liked Edge for the u17's. Thought he was one of the stand out players. Good touch and pass and seemed to look like he belonged which a few others did not. Would be disappointed if he's fallen away.

I was secretly hoping to see the new Rufers name there... not that i have ever seen him play. But someone wrote in the paper that he's an excitment machine, which sounds so un NZ its a good enoughedorsement for me : )

Can't see players like Yanomoto coming in after qualifiers. If he's vailable now, pick him now. The players to miss out will be replaced by young guys overseas or maybe a U17 kid who does well aka Payne.

If they played like that mate they would of gotten killed 5-6 nil. Milicich plays the way he does to combat not getting beaten so badly. hence why they drew 1 all with Uruguay and Cameroon and lost 2 nil to the finalist Portugual

Yeah rufer could come through indeed. Milicich is a bit limited. 2011 side was awfully frustrating to watch. Ah well

He was the only under20 coach to get a point at the world cup

Should make a play for mitch cooper. Wasnt part of australias afc under 19 side

Trip, that is a silly comment, you slag the selectors for not picking a local player that you watch regularly and then offer an alternative of an Aussie who has missed out on selection but you haven't seen play.

Joel will impress, good kid who loves to play. In some camps Joel was rated a better player than Cam, Cam made the u17s and Joel missed out, sometimes you just need a bit if luck.

Ive seen turner a number of times and that discriprion is inaccurate and terrible.

Mate get your hand off of it. You hold your candle for him but if that is the standard for strikers, then to quote HN, we are fucked.
I wont comment on what I think of your footballing opinion. You seem to do a decent job of showing everyone else what its worth with your comments.

Come back here in 2 years time and tell me how huge he is then. I bet you wont because that kid wont be.

I look forward to it. The kids scoring goals. Hes in the right place at the right time. You cant argue with that. My opinion is certainly worth more than yours at this point. You're among an elitist pack on here who think they're shit doesnt stink

you can think what you like. You just keep proving you know fuck all about football every time you post

They need Watson to mix it with the big island boys. He will need to be a platform to play off.

Joel Stevens looks decent when Ive seen him.

Was Steven Carmicheal not available? Also David Browne could have been an inclusion. Would be good off the bench

Only seen that Simon Arms play once (City v Waitak few weeks back) but he looked very very good. Can't remember who was running at him in the 2nd half but from memory nothing got past him. Where's he come from? One to watch IMO.

Simon Arms: ACFC youth player of the year 2011/12. Born New Caledonia, educated Auckland Grammar, now studying architecture.

Thanks. Promising talent, hopefully he can go places.

Right I've had enough of both of you.

Consider this a warning JV. No need to talk to people like this. Tripvincent - that goes for you too.

I saw Cooper play for Gold Coast United and I saw him in Mexico as well. Haven't obv seen him with Jets Youth this season but he has ties to NZ and we're light in MF so why not. I'd previously discounted him due to him playing for Australia but hey.

David Browne has been capped at age group international level by Papua New Guinea already.

Also, the chances of David being capped by the All Whites sometime in the future may be compromised by the fact that when he turned out for Papua New Guinea U-17, he wasn't eligible for New Zealand selection as a dual national.

Of course, as we've seen before, FIFA eligibility regulations change every now and then over time, so I wouldn't rule out anything in the long run.

As it stands, he's not eligible for New Zealand, as far as I am aware.

Aight.

Well I hope he sticks with PNG anyway. Don't like us pinching the top Island players.

Some good chat in here. There are a couple of Wellington boys who I had hoped would be in the mix, but they haven't been playing ASBP so I guess that rules them out.

Some might say that's because the Phoenix Academy kids were shoehorned into Team Welly at the expense of other (better?) local kids. But I couldn't possibly comment. Some of them maybe owe Gareth Morgan a thank you card.

Football's a funny old game. You get picked for one thing, meaning you can't be left out of the next thing. Etc and so on.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

The team is fine, all the kids(not boyd, fenton or overseas players) that are being spoken about went to camp and had their chance.

Watson, Biss, Gulley, Solomons and Rory Turner all had equal opportunity to show what they can do.

Some performed some didnt.

Its so like nzf to base selection around a 'camp' id like to think its based on form and on a season than said 'camp'
