Of course I'm not naive enough to that you can ever completely eradicate racism, thus I used the phrase "much of the problem."

I also don't quite understand where you got the idea that I thought Racism was confined to white people or what relevance that has to South African situation for that matter?  Mr_Incredible2010-07-08 21:06:02

I also lost count of the number of times I saw a white guy driving a ute with black guys sitting in the tray

This.  Smithy has a photo of a twin cab with 3 spare seats while a handful of black guys sitting in a cage on the back of the ute.
Like JD I only ever saw one white person working in a service type job. And she was about 16.

One of the things I'm curious about (particularly after watching the loltastic piece the daily show did, and because I'm reading "More than a game" which is a book about the FA set up on Robben Island) is were the racial issues of the past obvious at any stage?

Funnily enough I just read a blog entry about it a couple days ago, written by a member of the Canadian broadcast team for the WC. He talks with a former Robben Island inmate who was part of the football scene there. Good read, might be worth checking out

I was just making a point. The blacks in SA are made up of many tribes and for hundreds of years they have not really liked esch other. In fact they don't speak the same language.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

Without getting into too much detail, I think one of the biggest issues is that black or white, your chances in life are pretty much defined by the family you are born into.  In most cases, white people are wealthy and occupy the top of society so that will perpetuate and the same for african.  If your family has influence you will be favoured, if they don't you don't have much of a shot.  That's not really an issue of racism but you would say that it is a hangover from apartheid.  Basically it is a massive problem

I met a young white guy (early-20s?) in SA who was quite resentful towards the law which says if both job applicants are equal, and one is white, the other black; then you must hire the black person.
Also that black ownership is required in companies (I'm not sure of the exact details of this)

His point was that the law was only supposed to be for five-eight years after the end of apartheid.
He said there has now been 18 years since it, so the generation since will not be institutionally disadvantaged (by worse schooling, etc) therfore the law should be rescinded.

Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite

Better yet we could organise to meet at the Backbencher prior to a nix game and organise a Bus, get a local taxi driver that looks like John (Our SA bus driver) to drive it cos it would take him 2-3 hours to negotiate how to get to the stadium, tell people we have FIFA accreditation, get dropped off at platform 9 cos they wont accept our accreditation. We know greeny would probably wanna throw up down the side of the bus, smithy has probably got some rib shack red wine left, we could sit back and watch Trotter get slapped by Hone, sing a few songs and will be just like we never left.

that's a freakin fabulous idea!!!
Noticing Trotter and Hone got capital letters. Are Greeny and Smithy not worthy?

Maybe could also arrange for Red Badge to push everyone out of the stadium after the match?

We could hold it in Wellington. It would be a lot cheaper.
(though missing out on the excitement of a foreign country)

Nope, was driving in a car at the time; not somewhere I usually like to drink. But anyway:

Let's sit, let's talk - politics goes so good with beer ...

Lol, me too. I even sang along like on the bus trips (out of tune and out of time) :-) My 2 1/2 year old said "Daddy, stop singing" :-(

Its no longer a problem.
