How about you start from the top and work your way through the post. I'd love to hear your views Feverish, just love to.

considering those that were at the games stayed on for an hour + to celebrate with the team X3 - I would have thought the public who weren't there deserve the chance to pay their respects to a team that did bloody well (if you dont think that- then again I dont know where to start).

This is not a parade wanted by merely the football fraternity - I think it was ever Mayor Prendy who initiated it. And why you are bringing rugby into it I have no idea.

That is actually a very good point that I did not even consider. I still think an american friend of mine had a point when she said that in essence, it is a parade to let the AWs know that we're happy they didn't suck as much as we expected them to.

WCC may suck at some things including having adequate football pitches - but the one thing they can do well is organise an event. You are having a laugh alright Buffon

There's a difference to being in that euphoric moment and knocking up a parade 3 weeks later.
Also, I never said we shouldn't respect them at all (we already had people show up to airports ect) and I certainly never said I wasn't proud, I think you missed the last line of my first post there.
Just that I don't think that this is the most appropriate forum. The All Whites have also been one of the more publicly open sporting teams in the country, perhaps those who didn't go can write them a nice letter.

Part of being one of the ones who couldn't get leave/ lacked the money to tell his boss to shove it was that I accepted the fact that I couldn't be part of those post match parties, which did look fantastic. Lining the street will never replace missing that.

Also the team knows how much they captured the imagination of the New Zealand public, ask any of them. Check out the interview MIchael Burgess did with tvnz.co.nz today, they all saw news packages from back home and full well realise what they've done even before we have a parade.

I'm totally with you on this one. If it were held on Friday, all of us coming to Wellington from around the country for the Boca game would have been able to join in in showing our admiration for the All Whites. Sure Wellington is the football hub in this country at the moment and the only city where the parade would probably be appropriate, but it is the NEW ZEALAND All Whites. I doubt many people from around the country will be able to come down a couple of days earlier to enjoy the parade, whereas if it had been Friday you could of counted on many of us being there. Me for one. I'm quite gutted about it, to be honest!

it being on the wednesday i bet it will be on the news, which is good promotion for the game on friday and still leaves time for people to buy tickets.

sounds like your only issue footpaul is that you wont be able to make it.  how many thousands of people do you think are driving to wellington for the game on friday?  do you think they would have made f**k all difference to the number of people at the parade? no, of course they wouldn't.  so while its a real shame you cant make it and i'll miss you you are not part of a group that should be dictating when the parade is, as much as you might think youre very important

All I'm saying is Wellington football fans are not more important than any other fans around the country. And holding it on Friday would have allowed those of us dedicated enough to drive eight hours to Wellington to see the Nix also be able to show our admiration for what the All Whites achieved. Sometimes you Wellington football fans forget how lucky you are!

Depends, could be a good excuse to get out of work. I already said if it's going to happen, it might as well have good numbers so I guess I would use it as an excuse to get out of work for a while and either get there, think this is stupid and leave after I've given a bit of a wave, or I'd get there and realise how wrong I was. Yeah, probably should have a parade in every town that has more than 4 people and a dog. That way it's fair for everyone.

Get over it. Wellington is the capital of New Zealand. It is also the home of most of the All White players based in New Zealand. And the event also doubles up as promotion for the Phoenix v Boca game on the following Frida, and having it a couple of days prior allows higher media coverage and hopefully a bump in the attendance figures for the game. I don't think I'm making generalisations, it just seems many on here have a "screw you if your not from Wellington" view. Not just on this thread, but others too. All I've pointed out that if this parade was held on Friday, more people would be able to enjoy it, particularly from outside the region. What's wrong with that? Surely the more people who can get together and celebrate New Zealand's achievements the better. Vuvuzela's comment that I just want everything to suit me is ridiculous, there will be quite a few people coming a fair way for the Boca game, to me it would have been nice to let us enjoy the parade too.

Enjoy your parade, Wellington. We know when we're not welcome!

No, but you are in the minority.

Can't believe the amount of angst about a f**king parade.

With all due respect to the out-of-towners, WCC do this kind of thing quite often and it does involve closing off Lambton Quay and Willis Street for the best part of an hour in the middle of the day so they can do it whichever day they like as far as I'm concerned. It'll also get a decent turn-out simply because everybody is out at lunchtime anyway.

And yes, I'm sure it's been timed to give maximum exposure to the Boca Juniors game, which I'm also totally OK with given the contribution the Phoenix have already made to NZ football, and will continue to make in the future. And of course WCC also have an interest in promoting the Boca Juniors game and keeping this whole footballing bandwagon rolling along.

Actually, just thinking about it don't you think it's really poor form of Wellington to have the Boca Juniors game at all? It's really unfair on people who don't live in Wellington.

The main attraction with all parades through the streets of Wellington, whether graduation ceremonies for Massey or Victoria, the 7's, Wellington rugby winning something (a 1 in 100 year event), or the School Patrol parade last year, is that it screws up the trolley bus timetables and pisses off the drivers.  Those guys really deserve inconvenience.  So I vote for two parades.

In fact, it is far too selfish of us to have a professional football team at all when no one else does. Down with the Nix! Give the franchise to Canberra!

Its an event organised by the WCC. It is part of a week of festival of football that is also run by the WCC. I fail to see how this translates to Wellington fans being more important than others.

Any council would be free to organise such an event, its just that Wellington have.

Have the parade in Wellington, and then play all Phoenix league games in a different city in NZ.

Problem solved.

I was just thinking the same about some of the replies to me voicing my opinion! I understand that Wednesday might be the best day for promoting the Boca game, but I fail to see how there would be more people than Wednesday. Can you elaborate?

I think people are over estimating the effect this parade will have on ticket sales for the Boca game. Considering the price of tickets casual fans have been priced out. I don't think too many people who rock up to the parade will then think "sh*t, that parade was good, I feel like splashing out and watching some football". You'll have better luck encouraging more out-of-town football nuts to come down who are willing to pay for the tickets.

Again, previous comments about the parade keeping football momentum going are rubbish too. Wellington is not going to have any problem with football momentum - the Nix are playing top football in your city every couple of weeks for the next few months. It is the rest of the country that needs to remain engaged. So it is important to get the entire country right behind the Nix - think about that next time anyone wants to have a moan about pre-season games in Hamilton, or regular season games in ChCh. But in saying that it is the Wellington Phoenix, so I understand any angst around keeping it the capital's team.

And for the record, nowhere did I say other cities should have parades, in fact one of my first posts I said Wellington was the only appropriate city, as it is New Zealand's football capital.

All I wanted was for the Friday to be similar to the "festival of football" experience of November 14. Clearly too much to ask!

Deep breaths, everybody.

Oh FFS, the parade is happening, it is on Wednesday end of story. Get over yourselves...really! I for one will be there just as I was at the post game celebrations in SA. I think that they should be rewarded with a parade regardless if they drew every game or not.
The WCC have decided to have the parade and good on them for wanting to get on the bandwagon.
We do not want the mistakes of '82 happening where football went backwards for a bit, we want to grow the game and promote it.
I also beleive that the Boca game is a good way to continue the momentum.

So sayeth the Shepherd.....
