Hey everyone..
Been lurking for a while and enjoying the richness in banter and speculation. Finally decided to sign up to participate a little.

This morning I found on the dutch football site 'Voetbal International' the following article (rouglhy translated below the copy):

Pot 1: Zuid-Afrika, Brazili, Spanje, Itali, Duitsland, Argentini, Engeland, Frankrijk*
Pot 2: Nederland, Portugal/Bosni-Herzegovina, Rusland/Sloveni, Zwitserland, Griekenland/Oekrane, Servi, Denemarken, Slowakije
Pot 3: Ivoorkust, Ghana, Kameroen, Nigeria, Egypte/Algerije, Paraguay, Chili, Uruguay/Costa Rica
Pot 4: Japan, Zuid-Korea, Noord-Korea, Australi, Nieuw-Zeeland, Verenigde Staten, Mexico, Honduras

* Mits Frankrijk wint van Ierland. Mochten de Ieren de Fransen uitschakelen dan gaat Nederland naar Pot 1.

"Holland is, according to the Spanish Newspaper 'Marca', grouped for the WC 2010 draw in South Africa in 'Pot' 2. The result of this will mean that Holland has an increased chance to be grouped with another major football nation in the group stage for the championship.
The team of manager Bert van Marwijk still has a chance of 'promotion to the first placed nations but only if Ireland defeats France in the qualifier. A small enough chance after the 1-0 loss in Dublin.

The 'Pots' to draw from for the WC Draw"
'Pot1: South Africa, Brazil, Spain, Italy, Germany, Argentina, England, France
Pot2: Holland, Portugal/Bosnia-Herzegovinia. Russia/Slovenia, Switzerland, Greece/Ukraine,Serbia, Denmark, Slowakia
Pot3 : Ivory Coast, Ghana, Cameroon, Nigeria, Egypt/algeria, Paraguay, Chile, UruguayCosta Rica
Pot 4: Japan, South Korea, North Korea, Australia, New Zealand, USA, Mexico. Honduras"

Regretfully it would mean the All Whites cannot be placed anymore in a Group with some of the weaker nations like the Koreas, Honduras which i was hoping for. It also would mean a nice mouth watering clash with Australia is off the cards.
You can see what chances The All Whites have meeting who and the odds for all your preferences.

Regards

Im pretty sure that has a flaw, in that if Costa Rica won, then it'd mean the pots can change. Not likely that will happen though.

Gues we can't pull Hondorus like i hoped

How the pots will look depends on the outcome of the Uruguay and Costa Rica tie. It's not a straight swap one for the other.

Greece and Algeria are our best hope of getting a result, both don't score many goals and defend well. 'A' game is required tho to ensure 'NAE GID KICKINS' tho.

Can't have two African teams in the same group - if we get South Africa as the seed, Algeria's off the table for us.

In real terms, the AW's are one of the rank outsiders in the tournement, on form, experience and ability, but as I always say..... EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY....

Won't happen until after the World Cup. The risk of injury to players on either side on a 'no holds barred' pre- World Cup friendly will put to rest this idea. This is the World Cup we're talking about, not a mickey-mouse tournament.

Wait until the FIFA-breaks in September or October 2010, then let the boys go for it. One match in Aus, one match in NZ.

Pim's World Cup warm-up might be a mild Guus chase <!--articleTools Top--> Michael Cockerill
November 20, 2009

CROATIA, Uruguay, Paraguay, Portugal and even a revenge mission against world champions Italy are all possible match-ups for Australia in a blockbuster World Cup farewell match in Melbourne next May, but the chances of the Socceroos resuming their age-old rivalry with New Zealand seem remote.

After yesterday's final round of qualifiers in Africa, Europe and South America, the list of the 32 teams who will be going to South Africa has finally been filled. That list, and the impending World Cup draw in Cape Town, will be used to finalise the Socceroos' build-up - which is almost certain to involve only one match on Australian soil.

While Football Federation Australia has tentatively booked ANZ Stadium for a match on the weekend of May 21 to 23, it's understood coach Pim Verbeek wants only one farewell match, which is virtually certain to be played at the MCG on May 26. Contrary to some suggestions, there is no rule preventing Australia playing a team it draws in the World Cup, although Verbeek is likely to avoid that scenario for fear of giving away too many secrets.

FFA chief executive Ben Buckley remains coy about the schedule, and possible opponents, saying: ''We're now in the process of reviewing which teams are available. We now know the results from Europe and South America, so there's a lot more clarity. But I can't confirm any dates, how many games will be played, or any teams.''

Asked who would decide, Buckley added: ''That's up to the coaching staff. Pim and the team will ultimately determine the best way to prepare for the World Cup.''

Verbeek seems intent on mirroring the schedule devised by his predecessor, Guus Hiddink, before the previous World Cup in 2006. The Socceroos played one farewell game, against Greece at the MCG - which drew a record crowd of 95,103 - before flying to Europe, where they finetuned their preparations against the Netherlands (in Rotterdam) and Liechtenstein (in the German city of Ulm).

This time around the team is likely to head to base camp in Johannesburg immediately after the farewell match in Melbourne and play at least two games in South Africa. Based on Hiddink's model, one game will be against a strong opponent and the final match against a weak opponent - although Liechtenstein didn't quite prove to be the walkover they were expected to be. With the Socceroos a big chance of drawing an African opponent, southern African minnows such as Botswana, Mozambique, Mauritius, Seychelles, Malawi, Rwanda, Burundi, Lesotho and Swaziland will all come into calculations. Minimising travel for the players in the final week will be a key consideration.

If the World Cup draw on December 5 gives Australia a relatively late start to the tournament, there is a slim possibility of a third game in South Africa, which could raise the possibility of a long-awaited match against the All Whites.

While Buckley praised New Zealand's epic victory against Bahrain in Wellington last weekend, he has cast doubts on a match-up against Australia's oldest opponents, saying: ''It was a wonderful achievement by New Zealand, and they should be congratulated. It's potentially a defining moment for the sport in New Zealand, much as our match against Uruguay [2005] was.

''Of course we all know the great rivalry which exists between the two nations, but when you're preparing for a World Cup, you can't romanticise about that. You have to look at what's best for the team.''

While Australia have played New Zealand 62 times since their first meeting in Dunedin in 1922, the two nations have not met since Australia's switch from Oceania to Asia in 2005. Earlier this week, New Zealand Football chairman Frank van Hattum said he would ''love'' to resume the rivalry in a ''meaningful way''.

"Final Draw for the 2010 FIFA World Cup note to media
The detailed criteria to determine the seeded teams for the Final Draw for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa will be confirmed at the next meeting of the Organising Committee for the FIFA World Cup in Cape Town on 2 December 2009 (and announced at a press conference following the meeting).
If the criteria to determine the seeded teams were to include, as in the past, the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, then it would be the October 2009 edition of this ranking which would be considered, and this for sporting reasons. In fact, using the November 2009 edition would create an uneven situation, specifically for the European Zone, where the play-offs involving the eight best runners-up led to an imbalance in the number of qualification matches played between the teams."[/quote]

1 Brazil        59.7 29.3 30.3

31 New Zealand     2.3 0.0 2.3
32 Korea DPR       1.0 0.0 1.0

Pot 1 (seeded teams): Argentina, Brazil, England, France, Germany, Italy, South Africa, Spain
Pot 2 (rest of UEFA): Denmark, Greece, Netherlands, Portugal, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland
Pot 3 (AFC + OFC + CONCACAF): Australia, Honduras, Japan, Korea DPR, Korea Republic, Mexico, New Zealand, USA
Pot 4 (CAF + rest of CONMEBOL): Algeria, Cameroon, Chile, Cte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria, Paraguay, Uruguay

Possible draw (using random.org):

Group A: South Africa, Serbia, USA, Uruguay
Group B: Argentina, Slovakia, Australia, Ghana
Group C: England, Portugal, Mexico, Paraguay
Group D: Brazil, Netherlands, Honduras, Cameroon
Group E: France, Greece, Korea Republic, Nigeria
Group F: Italy, Denmark, Japan, Chile
Group G: Spain, Slovenia, New Zealand, Algeria
Group H: Germany, Switzerland, Korea DPR, Cte d'Ivoire

I like this random pool group suggestion. Although Spain is a tough exercise to minimise the goal difference. I do think we can push Solvenia and Algeria and nab enough points.

This group reminds me of Australia's pool group in 2006 against Brazil, Croatia and Japan, where they lost to Brazil but manage to nick enough points off Croatia and Japan.

In any case, such a group is still fairly exciting to watch. Can't wait until the 4th Dec (SAT) draw.

Bit of a quiet afternoon.  So I've just done my own WC draw (done from 4 paper cups):

Group A
South Africa (as host, automatic Group A seeds)
Holland
Nigeria (is it OK for two African nations in the same group?)
South Korea

Group B
France
Greece
Algeria
Japan

Group C
England
Denmark
Ghana
North Korea

Group D
Spain
Portugal
Paraguay
Oz

Group E
Germany
Slovenia
Chile
NZ

Group F
Brazil
Serbia
Uruguay (I'm pretty sure that's not allowed - two Sth American teams in one group)
Honduras

Group G
Argentina
Switzerland
Cameroon
Mexico

Group H
Italy (Pot A was found empty.  Italy was later found under my chair after a frantic search)
Slovakia
Ivory Coast
U.S

No, you can't have two teams from Africa/South America in the same group, so swap Uruguay and Nigeria around and you get a possible draw.
