I seriously doubt you'd fill the Westpac on a tuesday night for a rematch of a world cup game, that largely means nothing- no 'one shot for glory' etc.

The Phoenix only got 4k mid-week last year, and Oct is a long way away from the hype that the world cup generated.

Are you serious?

I can see Auckland/ North harbour making a complete dogs breakfast of it.

I don't see why that would necessarily be the case. It'll all depend on ticket prices and which players come down from Europe. And, of course, also how many of you Wellingtonians come up to join us in the White Noise section!
Yep, I think pricing, the opposition, and whether a full strength AWs side, plus night of the week, will be key variables in determining crowd (wherever it is).

It worries me that Paraguay are apparently trying to play us, Aussie and Japan in mini tour. They cant possibly have their European players, even South American, all released for that length of time - so what kind of team are they going to bring here???

If its in a FIFA window they should get most of them available, But I doubt any top clubs will want their players travelling halfway around the world to play in some meaningless friendlies.

The FIFA window is only a few days though.

If they are playing Japan, AUst and NZ, those Paraguayans will be away from their clubs for 10-12 days minimum at a time both European and Sth American leagues are being played.

This makes me think we are unlikely to see a top Paraguay team.

El Grap - what are your thoughts on this???

I see that FIFA has removed Paraguay friendly fixture from both the Paraguaian and All Whites fixtures list.

I say tackle him in the face.

Would love to see Roque Santa-Cruse play but apart from that i don't care. The average punter going to the game would not know many if any of their players. I want to see NZ win. If they are understrenght then all the better. Big big mistake playing midweek. You would not come close to filling a NZ stadium midweek in NZ.....for any code.

Dont think it would be a meaningless friendly as they all count in the fifa rankings.

I agree, play two games instead.  Mid week against an Oceania/lower Asian team in say Hamilton or Wellington and play a big team on the weekend in AKL or CHC.

The Oceania/Asian team would be cheap but put the AWs in the media spot light.  We should get a win here and this would increase interest in the weekend game.

I'm sure Hamilton or Wellington could get a decent enough midweek crowd (<10k) to make it worthwhile .

Agree Marius. The FIFA window is for 8-12 October, so there's no way they can squeeze 3 games in that period, especially considering the distances required. Furthermore, since the games are friendlies, the clubs are under obligation to release players for the maximum of 48 hours (rather than 4/5 days for competetive matches) only, and this too would make it difficult to have this kind of tour with all their best players.

At any rate, I doubt that that is the purpose of the Paraguayan FA at any rate - the 12 months following the World Cup are the quietest for South American teams, since they don't have a qualifying campaign for their continental championship, and is usually a good opportunity to start introducing younger players to the rigours of international football, so that may well be what Paraguay is hoping to achieve with the suggested tour.el grapadura2010-07-27 11:06:45

If it is going to be Paraguay B, or C, then the tickets will have to reflect it. $20-$25 will sell out anywhere in the country, in my opinion. A top Paraguay and New Zealand could reasonably be $15-$20 more.

sounds like paraguay are not playing japan during this window - making it possible for them to bring a "first" team. according to the Herald that is what they have agreed

Paraguay play Japan and China in September.

Australia and NZ in October.

from radio sports news, sounds like it's all but confirmed, just waiting for Australia to confirm their date.  Also the game being played in Auckland is unlikely due to Eden park not having over $30k capacity till the end of October.

Gee, I wouldn't really describe the possibility of having the national team play in other centres around New Zealand as "petty parochial bullsh*t". In fact, isn't that pretty much the complete opposite of petty parochial bullsh*t?

And I say that as a Wellingtonian.

If the game does go ahead I really hope NZF hold their nerve over the ticket prices and keep most of them under the $40 mark.

In fact, I can't understand why they seem to be nervous about the finances of this game at all.

The highest estimate I've heard of the cost to host this game is around $500k. So unless there's something wrong with my calculator that would mean a $40 average ticket price would mean needing a crowd of only 12,500 to break-even. That should be easily achievable, even on a Tuesday night, just about anywhere. And a $30 average ticket price would still only need a crowd of 16,700 to break-even and might even generate a much bigger crowd.

Herald article on the homepage has RoF as frontrunner for the paraguay game in October (unless Nana Misskouri wants to hold a surprise concert then).

If they hold prices to similar levels as 14 Nov I will buy an extra one so that Larissa can sit next to me. I will be constantly texting her throughout the match.

I'm taking a punt. Booked and paid for cheap flights to and from Napier [$171] and took the mystery hotel deal with wotif at $77 a night [Travelodge it ended up being].So if the game is not in Napier or Wellington, I'll be flying to Wellington to watch the game on Sky in my Travelodge room. Being from HB, thise air nz flights don't get much cheaper and if I waited for game venue confirmation I'd probably be paying another $100 minimum on flights. Just thought, if the game doesn't eventuate at all - I'll see you in Mermaids......

NZF is putting on a Money For Jam pony-show. Paraguay won't send the best players here. NZ Football won't have the best players on 12 Oct either.

NZ Football continues to rake in oddles of cash through extortions on kids through high junior levies. Kids are now turning away from football (soccer).

Waste of money in turning up for a pointless game on 12 Oct whether it si in Auckland, Wellington, Hamilton, Christchurch or even Dunedin! Just remind yoruself of the boys from Boca Juniors recently! Don't waste yoru money!

Aj13 and ShowUsYaNix, you do understand that others are allowed to express their opinions. Both of you have become phoenetically violent and your conduct here is a disgrace! Wonder you are equally disgraceful around or on the football pitch. You are setting a bad example for kids!

Wasn't it correct that 7 of first teamers from Boca Boys did not come to Australia and NZ? Great that WP put up the best it has to offer. We did get flashes of Argentinian brilliance but we got continuous aggro and poor sportsmanship. Remember the flying tackles, the near al- out brawl where both teams assembeld near the YF end? Surely that was not an epic game.

If that was an epic game, it shows how football supporters are one eyed and naive!

NZF can milk you guys dry and you guys will love it while being milked!! NZF must guarantee that players like Ryan Nelsen, Shane Smeltz, Ivan Vicelich, Simon Elliott, Tom Smith and newest expected Hammer-signing are going to show up on 12 Oct. Well we can leave out that violent Rory Fallon out!

$50 will be better spent in a real WP game and support WP instead!!!!

When did i say you wernt allowed to express your opinion? I didnt, I just reckon its stupid.

NZF can milk my titties all they want, i dont care if tickets for the Paraguay game are $200 each and we field an entire team of cloned Mulligans... I'll still be there. Likewise when we play the next round of WC qualifiers, I'll be there again. And I'll continue to be there.

You sound like a blouse. And i apologise to all the distraught 7yr olds on these forums who took offence to my previous 'censored' comment.

We will see the best Paraguayan players come to NZ. End of.

While I admire your support for the game I would just like to say that if you are willing to pay $200 then I would like to see the size of your titties.

Mine stop at $40.

It was previously indicated in media that a condition of this game was that Paraguay field their best team. Presumably AUstralia also expecting similar. However, it would hardly surprise me to see they are a few players short of the WC side.

I am more worried about the team we put together. We need to put out a top side with our European players back on deck. It is a tough ask for our lads to travel this far but I think if NZF can lock this October window into the calendar every year for a really decent home fixture then the players should make a committment to be available for it each time. If the players want to be looked after, they need to play their part.

I think I might hurt someone/cuss wildly if it's another game in Wellington.  The amount I lose travelling up there is shocking.  Christchurch game, please.  I understand there's some conference booked but with a bit of initiative they can work around that.
