Question.... What was Rikki's credentials before he got the All Whites job? From memory it was National League only?

Assistant and then shafted the boss (Mick Waitt) and successful coach of Central United.

Didn't he help shaft Fallon too where they were sharing a coaching gig?

Ricki's got a record for being a bit of a snake in the grass.  Not just in football but also while working for BP where he also just happened to be a good friend and collegue of FVH.

Aha, the name we've all been waiting for... ;)

http://www.radionz.co.nz/news/sport/244392/rufer-puts-hand-up-for-all-whites-job

'The former All Whites striker and Oceania footballer of the century Wynton Rufer has confirmed he's among the 50+ applicants who've already applied for the vacant New Zealand coaching job.
Rufer's recently taken up a contract to coach the Papua New Guinea national team and under 20's side.
He says he's added his name to the list of candidates to take over the All Whites, but doubts he'll get very far judging by his history with New Zealand Football.'

I like Rufer... speaks his mind, passionate to a fault.

I also think him and Shane had the Kingz play some of their best football when they were in charge for a short while.

One thing that would be of interest would be... could he get nz MORE MEANINGFUL GAMES THROUGH HIS CONTACTS in the game??

Might be able to get us some games against 5th german football clubs.

Former All White and NSL Newcastle player and former male model Mark Atkinson could coach the team on how to strike a pose and look good in a game. Actually anyone know what he is doing ATM>?.

Someone like Luc Trani would be good wouldn't he? Or Merrick. Someone who knows what a shit house NZF keep so wouldn't be scared off after five minutes.

Farina throws his hat in and I mean he has to right. Because he always applies for any coaching gig anywhere. I cant see us going with him as he is a 'ricki' level/standard coach. We've got to aim higher than him

And because, well, it's Frank Farina.

Fuck this stupid game

I read that this morning and I literally went 'oh fuck' cause you know someone somewhere will go 'well Frank has done this' and before you know it, everyone is in agreement.

I would think his history of being an active alcoholic and the stated intent to change the team culture following 'the invisible review' would stop the Frank appointment dead in its tracks. I mean, how serious is he actually being in contending for this or just putting up the appearance of wanting to do so (if you kinda follow my logic) when this report and shambles we have just had is pretty much common knowledge. Do they want another idiot in charge of the place when players seems to be enjoying Emblen?

Interesting that Martin said he has started sorting into the possibles, probables and not a fucking chance piles. I would love to find out whom makes the final cut, you would assume that Emblen, Ramon, Frank and Wynton would make it there on publicity alone. Wynton will slit his own throat when he tells NZF how its going to be and Frank will smell like last nights ashtray....

Can someone please explain all the hate of Farina for me please. Had success with Australia as coach. has experience winning in Oceania and somehow got that Sydney team into the playoffs. Am not saying he should be coach, but  surely hes a better option than Emblen

.

Sydney underperformed given their resources. Although this is debatable I think they were quite lucky to make the finals with things like refereeing decisions, freakish last minute goals and lack of draws (high number of wins and losses). I don't think they played very good football for the last two seasons and just making the playoffs of the a-league isn't exactly a high endorsement.

He is quite a defensive and pragmatic coach. His teams have never been renowned for fluency. The powers to be need to decide whether to stick with that approach or to be after someone who can develop better transitions and keeping the ball on the deck. I think with the better players we have at the moment, and their distinct lack of height, I don't think an aerial route is a good option any longer.

He doesn't come across particularly well in the press which is actually quite important to help raise the profile of the sport in NZ. Added to which, with NZ journalists and media the coach needs to be a little patient and shrug off irrational and undeserved criticism, while he tends to bristle when angered.

He clearly didn't have the dressing room while at Sydney. Its a little unfair to speculate too much as to the reason, but it still isn't a good look. I'm just guessing, but I don't think the players want to play like he would likely dictate, so he wouldn't be the players choice.

Off the field he doesn't have a good reputation with alcohol. While you can overlook some flaws if he was a brilliant option, I don't believe he is.

Against that he does have experience and did have some good results with Australia when he first took over. They didn't last very long but he has had some success 15 years ago in a similar situation to what we are in now.

Farina did well with the Aussie side, Got them a win in the 1st leg against Uruguay then roasted in the 2nd. Leaving guys like Aloisi and more so Cahill on the bench when he pushed so hard to get him past the Samoa/Aus playability shite. Playing Mark Viduka up front who couldn't score for his national team only when he was in Thailand (LOL).  I guess Herbert did the same thing (Tim Brown) however you have to remember there is a 1% chance we  get AFC play off then another 1% we get CONCACAF and %98 we get CONMEBOL.

Are any of the mentioned coaches capable of getting the AW pastes the 5th best Sth American side?. Maybe Farina but i feel our squard are more then ready to play with the ball on the ground.

I think that Farina's success is too far in the past. Football has moved on in the last decade and he hasn't been an outstanding tactician in the A-League, while the Australian side he coached was significantly more dominant in Oceania than NZ is now. The off-field stuff in recent years just seals it for me.

I might be a loner here but I think Wynton may not be such a bad choice.

While his playing career was stellar, his coaching record doesn't do anything for me. What coaching badges does he even have?

It sounds like some people with strong coaching backgrounds have applied and I think NZF would favour someone with international experience unless there is a candidate with outstanding domestic history. I wouldn't be surprised if some coaches with experience with African or Asian sides have put their names forward.

The problem with Wynton is it's his way or not at all. He just does not compromise. In some respects, I understand why considering his pedigree but you also have to look at the landscape and be able to cut your cloth to what you have. He point blank refuses to do that.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Rufer at least would be interesting at first- sure he might be able to empathise a bit with the two lads in continental Europe. Then it would probably all go to crap- but it would be a bit like Miron Bleiberg, but with the bonus of him having been a Kiwi football legend...on the flip side it might mean the end of decent soccer radio.

Farina has to be a non-starter. Papua New Guinea, Sydney, NZ? If we wanted Farina, we shoulda just kept Ricki.

Not convinced about Emblen. Guess we did ok against Japan. Ricki was ambitious for football in NZ and himself and I don't get the same buzz from Neil. Feel like I'd like to see someone absolutely dead keen for the job and hate to say that he was a part of the Solomons debacle. Know he's got his fans, but just want to see a bit more I guess- not the feeling that this might be the highlight of his career.

Ok- to put this another way- would you want Emblen coaching the 'Nix? If that's not a 100% yes, I don't want them near the AWs.

almost 12 years ago · edited almost 12 years ago · History

Rufer isn't exactly impressing as coach of PNG U20s (and doesn't have a great coaching record as a whole), and he has a history of rubbing people the wrong way. Not ideal if that happened with key players.

Don't know where the idea that Ricki was ambitious for NZ Football or himself comes from. Refusing to change formations so playing Killen as a DM, or picking Christie for the Mexico game, don't smack of ambition to me. And as for his ambition for himself, wouldn't he have taken one of those big money offers after the WC if that was the case? Wouldn't he have gone overseas to find a job after he left the Nix?

I still think that Emblen is our best option. It's not like we've got millions of dollars floating around to pay a coach. I'd guess the Nix pay more than the AWs.
