I don't think so especially if theres something at stake

Would have to beat the largest football crowd in NZ by about 15,000. That's a big ask.

Didn't Wellington go from about 1,500 (WC qualifier at the stadium against.....New Caledonia?) to 35,000 for the Bahrain game?

Vanuatu. Think it's slightly different circumstances, but that's not really important here. Any sell-out crowd will require significant support from 1) people outside from the city where the game's played, and 2) non-football people. That was much easier to accomplish in 2009 - Phoenix had had a good start to the season (6-0 over Gold Coast anyone), Ifill was becoming a household name, and there was genuine excitement about. Add in that the All Whites pulled off a great result away from home which got the people excited that we could actually qualify, and the month's gap between the games helping the ticket sales. Add into the mix that the game was on a weekend which helped bring in significant support from elsewhere, and it was basically a set of extremely favourable circumstances which helped make that game what it was.
Replicating any of that this year ranges from difficult to impossible. I think Wellington would struggle to sell out, Auckland I think will be near impossible.

I'm putting it out there now, the game wherever it is played will not sell out.  Sadly because there are too many apathetic kiwis and football has had it's time in the sun with the non-footballing public.

I agree with El Graps post.

Disagree completely. The game will sell out.

Out of the 35,000 people  who attended the last game, how many do you honesty think would not want to part of that again... and how many people sat at home and watch and thought to themselves, shit, I wish i had gone to that game.

NZer's are a sport savvy people. Even rugga heads who know nothing about the game no that there is notA  tournament bigger than the world cup anywhere in the world.

Buffy is right.    They still think the rugby world cup is the 3rd biggest sporting event.

So it's agreed then? Tegal dresses up in an all white chicken outfit and everyone at NZF insists that it really is a kiwi,

Sell out crowd at Wgtn.  Half time entertainment watching Tegal take out a girl in a mad "kiwi egg scramble".

Put me down for four tickets.

Two referee trios shortlisted for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil recently flew the flag for Oceania at a training seminar in Dubai demonstrating that the growth of the game in the region isn’t confined to players and coaches.

The two groups are made up of referee Norbert Hauata of Tahiti who is joined by Mark Rule of New Zealand and Tevita Makasina of Tonga and New Zealand referee Peter O’Leary with colleagues Jan Hendrick-Hintz of New Zealand and Ravinesh Kumar of Fiji.

What have I been volunteered for?!

Is it worse to play the 2nd leg at home with such a short turn around? My theory being, us being at home 2nd, have to travel there and then back for the 2nd leg, the opposition just have to travel here.

Allegedly

But if we can sneak an away goal and keep the score down then playing the deciding game in front of our fans in our conditions would be a huge advantage

What will be important is the proportion of the team we play who is playing in Europe. If the majority of them are based there then they will still have to clock up some kms to make it home.

Auckland will rise once more

Permalink Permalink

I would expect that we would assemble the squad in the States before the game, so the European based players wouldn't have add far to go. The European based players from the opponent will have to travel there as well, so I don't think it's as simple as 'we have to travel there, they do not'.
