Howieson is in the team. Keat missed out as he's injured.

Fitzgerald misses out cos its 3-4-3 and hes not a starting DM in japan. Rather clapham over butler and henderson for bright. I like james in there

i like having james back too, hope he's as good as he was for us a few years back

Odd that none of the U20s have made it through to this side, we generally have a terrible record of players coming through the grades and ending up in the seniors.

That is one of the weakest sides we've pulled together for a while I'd say.  The only players really international class are Winston and possibly Tommy Smith (jury out on Wood at that level).

I'd love to know what Chris James has done to get picked again after 5 years (i.e. what is he doing now that he wasn't doing a year ago?) - maybe they just want to have a look at him.  And they pick Clapham in loads of squads and then when he might get a game they drop him.  It's quite odd.

I think if I was choosing between Chris James and Aaron Clapham, James would win every time.

When you consider if Smeltz, Rojas and McGlinchy were there, we would not see Bright, James and 1 other.

Good point

So assuming these three come back into consideration by November then its the chop for Bright and James at least. Its a shame that Keat was injured. He has not had a decent run to try and establish himself in the AW's....a half game against  Jamaica where he looked OK and a start against China where he was average. Clapham has had more opportunities.

You kind of wonder how Bright and James are now back.....why now? what has changed. And what about Craig Henderson? who has been starting regularly and scoring goals in Sweden Div 1 which is way higher league than Finland.

The Butler selection does not surprise me at all. Classic Herbert.....he likes to have a wrecking ball in midfield to muscle up, turn over possession etc. Thats why he was playing Killen there(hopefully that disaster is over)

Not surprised or disappointed by the selection. Herberts plan will be park the bus, defend in numbers, be hard to break down and hopefully nick a goal from a set piece/long ball. So its his call to select the squad that will do the job the way he wants it done.

jd, you say that this is a weak squad.is your issue with the selections made, or the players that we currently have in our player pool?

There is hope with storm roux potentially starting for the mariners at RB, Appiah-Kubi coming on in year 2 poss as well as Fenton, Rufer, Fitzgerald and Tuiloma in France. Only Butler depresses me but you'd hope that he's warming Keats seat.

Player pool really - but I do think it has been exacerbated by Herbert's approach and team selections.  It looks weaker when you consider how we're going to line up.  In my mind he's still playing a formation designed around a very strong, physical defence and a very tall, strong, physical attack and we're going to end up with potentially Wood, Rojas and Smeltz none of whom are that comfortable trying to survive on knock-downs .

His only option unless he takes a chance on roux or Tuiloma and plays  a 4-2-3-1 which based on our pool is our best bet

Or you go 4 centre backs - Durante, Sigmund, Reid, Smith at left back.  No way I'd play lochhead who is going to be off the pace and is past it.  Full backs don't overlap.  Then you play Vicelich in front.  Super solid base, none of those are going to get forward a lot.  Then you pick a normal combination of 5 fairly mobile attacking players.  Mcglinchey and Rojas central, Wood in front flanked by Smeltz and Kosta, or some other combination of players all rotating.

That to me looks like a normal team, not the mish mash sides we've been sending out.  Ok it's still not going to be pretty and you'd feed off scraps but the players are in their proper positions!

The last side we put out in the nations cup looked like a club side picked during the uni holidays when half the team is away - as I said at the time Killen wouldn't get in the ASBP as a central midfielder and he's starting for the All Whites!

I agree with TV that the 4-2-3-1 would suit us in terms being strong at the back and spine but I have to say, that line up you have listed JD does look interesting. The only kicker is mobility/speed and I am worried about Sigmunds ability to give away dumb fouls or leave the line.

The one major difference that I sense between Ricki and Ernie (and this could just be my perception) is that he says to his front guys 'You've got no fixed position, just go for it' where as Ricki seems to be a bit more rigid on positional settings.

Dear god I hope he does not play a back 3. I honestly believe that will be the killer for us.

Yeah you could go Sigmund RB.  This is just a suggestion but just trying to show how we can put together a more orthodox side than the odd collections of players we've been coming up with

Sadly, I think back 3 is literally the last thing Ricki will change (along with dropping Tony Lochhead)

Hes definitely going to. Same formula. A shame really reid and smith diff players in a back 4

Speaking of right backs, what about Liam Graham getting a go at some stage? All I know about him is what I've read on here but if he was playing Serie B last year he must be worth a look at least.

The only reason the back 3 worked previously is Ryan Nelsen's leadership and reading of the game. With Bertos and Lochhead pinned back we were really playing a back 4 + sweeper most of the time. None of our current CBs can play that sweeper role that Nelsen occupied.

i'd rather have 3 center backs behind a dodgy right back than just 2

but i do like JVs idea of playing our 4 best defenders in a line across the back just like we used to in the 80's and 90's

Well we tried a 442 in Honoraria, didn't we?

Same thing- who do you play at left and right back? We've got wing back options, but not so many full back options.

I think Vicelich is too slow these days to play at  the back in meaningful internationals. Durante maybe could do it, but not as effectively as Nelsen did and not as effectively as he could play as a regular CB. I'd rather have makeshift fullbacks in a back 4 than a makeshift sweeper in a back 5, because at least most players are used to playing in a formation with 4 defenders to start with.

Lets face it guys, Ricki will play back 3 Reid, Smith, Dura/Siggy with 2 wingbacks...Lockhead left and Leo right....bet your house on it.

The problem with this is without Nelson running the defense we are liable to be carved up. Remember how streaky at the back we were against New Caledonia in Dunedin. If we don't improve, a Honduras side would slice us to pieces. He will probably want Vicilich in at DM  for his experiance. So out of our defense we will only have two players Reid and Smith who are young, mobile and playing at a decent level.

Its got train smash written all over it.

The other problem area for me is on attack. I fear Ricki will pick the skillful little guys like Rojas, Weemac and Costa and then pump long ball at them. Lets face it Ricki is too old to change his tune. Its too late to turn the AW,s into a fast, mobile, ball on the deck attacking force. If he is going to play longball then I hope he picks the players to play it properly. So its tall timber up front.

The irony is the longball game with a rock solid defense is more likely to trouble a CONCACAF team than anything else. Rough them up in midfield, strangle them at the back and pump balls into the mixer could well get us a result...fine by me, whatever gets us there!

Team picked a month ago...Fitzgerald wasn't playing J1 then and Henderson well he may or may not be injured we don't know. Nobody   knew WeeMac was out because his wife was expecting...

Mostly agree with last sentence. However against Jamaica at Mt Smart (last year?) we did play fast & mobile with balls on the deck, and the movement and passing between Kosta, Marco, Payne & Wood, etc. looked damn good and v promising. However on the breakaway, Jamaica were also fast - very fast - and it cost us. Siggy and Lochead unable to prevent. But it was only a friendly, of course.

Yep have to agree Vicelich is a bit long in the tooth. I do wonder why we've gone with an older Australian who has thrown his hat in with NZ obviously because he didn't think he'd get a call from the socceroos. Nothing against Durante but aren't there any young kiwis we could give a chance to? What happened to Cole Peverley - wasn't he right up there at one stage in Germany? What about that lad Darren White - wasn't he playing overseas for years?

Some people have mentioned in other parts of this forum that Fitzgerald hadn't been playing for his J2 side, then his J1 side take him back and he starts playing - shows that maybe if we give one of our younger players a chance they might do the job for us. Need to try and blood young players in when we can, not keep using the old soldiers!

He's another good young player that maybe should've gotten a call up - is he out of favour?

Darren White is a winger playing Northern 1... Challenging stuff.

Peverly has talent but prone to brain exlosions. You don't want that in and international game. Lower levels do not punish those mistakes as much

I suspect the reason why Dura is being looked at for that DM role is that Ricki views Durante and Ivan as similar players. What position does Ivan currently play? Bet he thinks that if Ivan can do it, Dura can too.

Ricki confirmed it in todays Doom Post. Three at the back, Dura trialing at DM, Locky and Leo wingbacks.

So it will be

                             Moss

   Reid    Siggy/vicilich    Smith

             Dura        ?????

He also said that Fenton was unlucky to miss but he will watch him at RB in the A's game against the Nix with an eye to him coming in in October. IMO they should leave to kid out.....way too much pressure to throw him into internationals when he has not even played a game at A-League level at RB. Let him develop in the role...give him time.

Yeah can't see Fenton playing RB before Nov qualifiers. 3-4-3 stock standard Herbert but should we qualify he'll have more options depending on development of Fenton/Storm Roux at RB. Left back will most likely be the new nightmare.
