Seems increasingly likely that Fiji will be stripped of the June Oceania Nations Cup at the OFC Congress next month and OFC apparently will either  give it to us (yay!!!), Solomons or New Caledonia.
The March Men's Olympic Qualifying Tournament was taken off Fiji last week and awarded to us.
 
 
Our chances of hosting it must be pretty damn good!!!
 
Sky will then have no excuse not to show all the AW's group games against Fiji, Solomons and PNG plus the Final. Be interesting to see how many people turn out to see the AW's against Island teams- I'd wager more than in previous years.

Pitty. I was looking forward to a Fijian holiday. I'd suggest for the 'good of the game' it'll go to one of the island nations. They could probably wager on a few Kiwi's traveling this time too.

Yeah I was eyeing up some time in Fiji, if they move it to Auckland or something it won't quite have the same "June holiday" about it.

He isn't eligible. He's represented Australia at age group level and he could only play for the All Whites if, while representing Australia, he was eligible for NZ. We know he wasn't eligible then as he's still several months shy of supposedly being eligible this time around.

FIFA seem to turn a blind eye more for smaller countries but have blocked players switching from (and to) major footballing nations:
"Arteta, a Spaniard playing for Everton, had hoped to represent England but it transpired he wasn't eligible because he played for Spanish youth teams without holding a British passport at the time.

Lia, who captained Australia at under-17 and under-20 level, is in the same boat as Arteta and a spokesman for New Zealand Football admitted Article 18.1 might catch them out.

'Ultimately it is up to the Fifa player status committee to decide on the matter and if a player wants to put his hand up for selection, and the coaching staff of New Zealand thinks he may add value to the national team then New Zealand Football will apply to Fifa to hear his case,' the spokesman said."

Like I said in the other thread, your information is wrong - neither of these players played an official game for the junior teams of Ghana and Nigeria respectively.

As such, they're not in the breach of the regulation in question. Lia, on the other hand, has played an official game for Australia's junior teams and therefore is in a breach of the regulation.

At leat we are sure that Daniel is now eligible to represent the AW'S

The Phoenix will take on Sydney without midfielder Daniel after the Brazilian suffered a high ankle sprain shortly after coming on as a second-half substitute. He is likely to be sidelined for three weeks.

Daniel, who is off contract in April, was given permission to visit a club in Thailand last week but the 32-year-old maintained his preference was to stay in Wellington.

"It didn't take me long to realise that Thailand was not a place I wanted to take my family," he said. "Had I been younger and single I could probably have given it a go, but I want to continue playing for the Phoenix and the All Whites now I am qualified to do so."

That's not right Midfielder,  5th best Asian has to go through Conmenbol.  Meanwhile the Oceania winner plays the 4th best in concacaf.

Wow, great trolling from denchy. The finer side of humanity always shines through on internet discussion forums. Anyway I think in FIFA's view WC qualifiers count as WC games and that's why the tournament itself is sometimes referred to as the World Cup Finals. But I'm not sure what his point is about that though - we've only played 3 WC games since the Bahrain match and haven't lost any either and one was against the (then) defending champions.

I think we would have a run for 3rd in either of those groups - but it wouldn't be a sure thing

The only things I do agree with is we do need to develop more coaches.  Not convinced about Herbert having all the hats. 

And this I also agree with "Some of our other players were still at A-league pace and got caught out. Tim Brown and Tony Lochhead are too slow at international level and are severely lacking in one-on-one marking situations. Michael McGlinchey should have stayed on in the midfield, instead of Brown, if we are building for the future. We are still in desperate need of a strong midfield playmaker,.."

Tuaa is a great coach, he did wonders with YoungHeart back in the day. In terms of a director of football/development type role for NZF though, what about Wynton? I know he's a bit nuts but he is really into player development and working on the technical aspects, and has connections all over the place. The Wynners programme has produced some decent players too.

Anyone know how much it costs to get the UEFA coaching licenses? It would be good if NZF could pay for all the NZFC coaches to get their badges. Its that sort of thing which could have real long term positive results on the quality of footballers we produce.

'[Fiji FA President] Patel said the Nations Cup is now up for tender between the OFC's 10 other member associations, including NZ Football, who scooped the Olympic qualifiers currently being played in Taupo.

Van Hattum said NZ Football is currently assessing whether it will now bid for Nations Cup hosting.

"We've received the documents as with all other member associations, but haven't made a decision yet," he said.

"I don't think it's a forgone conclusion, a number of associations will be interested in it.

"We also have to make sure we don't overstretch resources, there is financial risk involved."

Good to see another island nation having the opportunity to shine in the global football limelight.Sounds like the Solomons have a great stadium with good facilities for the tournament. The top four teams to progress to round robin home and aways, wonder if we'll get live streams provided of the quality we had for the Under23 Olympic Qualifiers, OFC?

Decent looking stadium. Haven't NZF and Sky agreed a deal for this? So we wont get a free stream like the U23 tourny.

edit - Turns out it's only the home games during phase 3 of qualifying so no certainty that we'll see any of phase 2.
