There is not a single positive to take out of this so far.  This is absolutely shocking.  It is so bad it's unbelievable.  Really summed up by the NZ player who had a ball roll (slowly) less than 1m away from him, ten seconds before the half-time whistle went - he didn't move at all and let it run to a BF player.  Surely NZ has better u-17's than this?  I understand it's hot, but I've played football in searing heat (probably as hot) and I managed to string passes together.

Added to the shambles on the pitch is Steve Cain wearing a dress?

I'm going to be honest, these guys (undoubtedly) are fitter than me by far and way, but even I could do better than your average kiwi player right about now - that is no lie.  Don't think I'm boasting because I'm not.  Better than one of our players isn't good at all.

That's quite a childish rant

100% true if you watch the first half so don't bother acting mature.  Second half is better fortunately.  I've never seen a team deserve an equaliser less but I most certainly won't be complaining.  It even looked for a minute before they stopped that we could snatch another or at least threaten.

The rain is unbelievable and the artificial surface isnt draining. looks like our goal was a BF own goal. Damn we were actually back in the game which is amazing considering how far under the cosh we were in the first half. The rain definately helped us as we were banging it long.

The conditions are hurting BF more than us so far
The game may be abandoned

I shall overlook your sarcasm and take your compliment.   Truth be told that rain is something else and I'd probably drown in it.

As I understand if the game is called off the current score counts but I'm not 100% on that so if someone could enlighten us it'd be appreciated.

Anyone know what happened in the first tournament match? They said this happened in the first game - did they ever get back on and if not what result was declared?

And re: our goal - what are the laws of the game please? Does a free kick like that have to be touched or can it go straight into the goal and be counted? This is not a question about whether or not this free kick was touched - just a general question.

The trouble is that if the sun comes out which it possibly could the humidity off the pitch would kill us. If anyone has played on the North Harbour tiger turf pitch (same as this one) you will know how hot the pitch is and how much heat it radiates.
What we need is for the rain to ease enough to let the pitch drain a bit but just keep it wet enough to disrupt the BF style of play. if we get out of this with a point Im buying a lotto ticket right away. Fingers crossed

Apparently at the end of an Argentina game (so the commentator said) it started raining in a similar fashion but that was different to this game as we still have 25 minutes to go.

That was a direct free kick so it could go straight in and didn't matter if it took a touch.

From my POV I didn't see a kiwi player touch it, if anything I thought one of the Burkino Faso players touched it last.

I cant believe how we went from 30% or so possession to probably 50/50 in the second half. The rain didnt start right away and we did look a little better but man that rain has had a huge impact

C'mon guys even though we're being out played I'd to see us score another and take a hugely undeserved win!

We need a win right? From a tournament point of view I mean. How likely would it be that 3 draws would be enough to advance?

Would be great fun to be there.  Message just came up "FIFA U17 World Cup match suspended due to inclement weather".

I wonder if that means suspended for a few minutes or until another time.  You'd think for a few minutes as they're still broadcasting and would they really replay a match that's 1-1 and over an hour in?  Looks like it will be abandoned.

lol - who's on at SKY at 5:30am?

Didn't even know there was such a word as "inclement".

Why are the fans so happy? Because they are on TV or because they presume BF will now advance to the next round on the basis of a draw?

I think they are just happy because they are happy, they seem to think its great fun. Love it. I havent seen rain like this before at a footy game. There are a sh*t load of young women with wet shirts there......

Don't worry, the game will be resumed in time for SKY to replay highlights of the UK snooker heats.

Its that badly waterlogged I can't see them draining it any time soon. Probably have to abandon or reschedule.Question is: the match following straight after was  Costa Rica v Turkey, will they get to play that?
At 1 -1 if the result stands, BK would need to beat Costa Rica next round to stay in I'd say. NZ is be 2nd equal still. Even before result of Costa Rica v Turkey is known we'll probably still need to beat Turkey  or at very least draw with them and hope other results go our way.

Whole load of school pupils just appeared to be filing down and (assumedly) out.  Maybe they know something we don't or the school teacher has had enough. loyalgunner2009-10-29 05:43:42

I thought BF won their game vs. Turkey 1-0? Surely this is almost enough even if they qualify as a 3rd place finisher?

No idea.

I thought BF had beaten Turkey also, but the commentator kept mentioning a Turkish victory.

Can anyone with knowledge of previous world cups with only 24 teams tell me if 3 draws tended to be enough to qualify as one of the best 4 finishing 3rd placed teams?

Yes Turkey beat BF.
Im betting the game is called off, we have premier highlights on tv now.

Back when we had 24 teams only 2 qualified. Not sure why they are doing the best 3rd team this time

No, when there were 24 teams it was 6 pools of 4. 16 went through to the "round of 16". That was the top 2 in each pool (12) plus the top 4 teams out of the 6 that placed 3rd.

Subsequently the world cup was expanded to 32 nations meaning only the top 2 qualified from 8 pools of 4 to give you the 16.

82 world cup....
The format of the competition changed from 1978: for the first time, 24 teams qualified, divided into six groups of four (1 through 6). The top two teams in each group advanced to the second round, where they split into four groups of three (A to D). The winners of each group advanced to the semi-finals. This was the only World Cup to be played under this format. The decision to expand from 16 to 24 teams came from FIFA to give the opportunity to more teams to participate, especially teams from North America, Africa and Asia.

In the last U17s WC, three teams finished with 3 points and were in 3rd place in their groups. Only one team made it through to the next round though, because they had a better goal record with -1.

So in theory it is possible to go through with 3 points if we come 3rd in our group and a goal diff of zero. It would have been enough in the last WC.

However could come 4th in our group with 3 points? its possible too.

If we build it, they will come...
