Good looking squad, for at least trying to take the game to them. No point sitting back. WE WANT 7!

Regardless of the result it will be great to see some attacking football in NZ against a top ranked side.

i like the line up and personally would have liked to have seen a similar shape in mexico bar for a couple personal changes as I think this system better reflects the squad we have now.

As mention earlier, with some of the other young NZ players around at the moment this is beginning to look like a nice team for the future.

Only down side is, we wont have any money to organise internationals for them after this.

I'm on the road from Auckland now. Ngarawhawhia (sp). Flags everywhere. Horns beeping. Guys singing from the pavements. Yeah right.

Sounds like Wellington  LOL. The whole downtown is a festival of football. Mexican themes everywhere. Thousand of fans hanging out soaking up the atmosphere....

As for the team announcement....probably the boldest team selection that Ricki ever made. First step is to name attacking players, second step....put in place tactics and plays that will put players in scoring positions. He gets a pass for step one. We will have to wait until Wednesday night to see how the tactics work. This is the team of popular choice so there can be no recriminations after match.

It would be nice to give some fan recognition to some of the older players finishing their careers. Ivan, Leo and Locky all deserve a good send off.

IMO this game will probably pan out with Mexico starting on fire....once they score a couple of goals they will probably sit back and let us play a bit. Should be a very open game and goals...lots of them.

Prepare your ........!!!!!!!

Moss -- Tuiloma . Smith . Durante . Roux -- Kosta . James . McGlinchey . Rojas -- Brockie . Smeltz

That's the lineup I called last Thursday...

Like this lineup and similar to the one I called for in the first leg. Only I would have played Wood instead of Brockie and replaced Smeltz at half time with Fallon. As it is Brockie should only get half a game at best, he's not good enough and I'd prefer Fallon in his place. The reason we didn't go for this at the Azteca is down to Herbert's innate fear and conservatism. Mind there were also a number on this forum saying we must go for old experience legs over youth and we ended up being torn apart.

If this lineup pulls off a better result than the Azteca then Herbert should walk into the night and not look back - please.

You mean you're predicting worse than the 5-1 thrashing at the Azteca? I see your reasoning as Ricki's desperate to shift the blame but I really don't think this younger attacking lineup will fare worse than Dad's Army at the Azteca. Even if we do we're bloodying new talent. I fancy a 2-2 draw.

Kudos to Ricki for reading my post and good on him for making a go of it in the last game.

For all those "counterfactual merchants" you got the team you wanted. You've got no reason but to be on board.

I bet he hangs on every word JV. I do wonder if behind the scenes pressure has forced Ricki's hand. This is not his natural team.

I'd rather lose 5-1 with this new lineup as they'll learn from it. Throwing on players whose careers were over does little moving forward.

In light of this would prefer Siggy to Durante who is not of international standard.

I remember reading in 1969, Brazil were having a few poor performances and a journalist was always getting stuck into them...so eventually the Brazilian Football Federation gave him the coaching job for Brazil!  He turned it around, brought in many of the players which eventually won the 1970 world cup...so ya never know, someone on the forum here might have a chance :)

He's effectively retired considering he's not going to leave Wellington to find a game somewhere.  It's the right call

I still struggle to understand how Brockie gets in this side.  What role is he actually going to play?  I like the personnel more but I'm still not sure about our midfield 2 against their 3.

Don't get me wrong, I agree its the right call but lets not say he has been dropped because he was shit in the away leg or because he has no club. He has been dropped (or to use your word 'retired') for a player of the future. Its absolutely the right call.

Brockie gets into this side because of his age and at 26, he has a cycle in him. Killen, Fallon and Smeltz are effectively done. In the 4-4-2 with Wood being suspended, the other striker is Brockie. I'm not sure what other strikers are there when you 'retire' those 3. I'm trying to think of the next lot of names up front actually.

You are effectively playing Marco and Kosta as attacking halves/wingers who will provide the delivery for the front two if it does not come from McGlinchy/James

I don't think Brockie is up to international level (and I think he's had plenty of opportunities) - plus I think we're likely to be overrun in midfield with two out and out strikers.  This is where I'd love to have had Keat in the squad so we could finally, for once, try out a 3 man central midfield with McGlinchey able to play a bit further forward and link up with Marco.

It's funny, we move out of the 80's with Ricki's long-ball 3-4-3 into the 90's with his flat 4-4-2!!

In the game at North Harbour against either Honduras or Paraguary [can't remember, saw both games] i thought Brockie was the best NZ player on the pitch.

Wrong thread? But good point. If we go down with all guns blazing, he'll have shown he's able to reinvent the wheel. So maybe he'll next be seen sporting a grin and a blond mohawk and we'll be hearing he's both the public and the NZF favourite among the next applicants

If the New Zealand All Whites needed a reminded that
Miracles can happen in sport, they only need to look at
the USA Ice Hockey team that beat the mighty Russians
for the Gold Medal in 1980.

What the All Whites need though is beyond a miracle,
if they were too beat Mexico 4-0 and qualify for the
world cup, nothing in our sporting history would come
close, I would say it would go down as the biggest
sporting upset THE WORLD has ever seen or will seen.

To qualify for Brazil before the first leg would've been a
massive upset, perhaps in the top ten sporting upsets of
all time.

To win the second leg 4-0 and qualify, would be the biggest
thing that has ever happen in the history of sport.

That is why it won't happen.

Reality rules over the dreamers.

At around 930pm Wednesday night, kiwis wont be
jumping for joy, we wont be setting trends on twitter,
we wont be txting family and friends around the world,
about how the All Whites did it.

We will be very proud, that we put up a better effort, we
will talk about the future of NZ Football and who should
lead us, but this will be no miracle on ice.

Let the 37 thousand kiwis have fun, let us sing and chant,
let us admire the Mexicans, let there be talk before the
match that IF we get a early GOAL, things could go our
way, but deep down know, it's just too big of a hill to
climb.

We're not going to Brazil, a Miracle on Ice is just that,
a Miracle that only happens once in History.

But that's okay, as long as we play like a football
team should.

Here's hoping that we do.

We may have, secretly. According to some Mexican media reports that suggest their Federation in league with their powerful TV networks paid the All Whites off to get that result - actually that would explain some of Herbert's strange selections such as Christie and the way we sat back and "prepared our anus."  They could easily afford to pay us more than we would have got for qualifying because they stood to lose hundreds of millions of dollars.

If NZ Football mysteriously come by some money to finance internationals & programs over the next few years, you'll know where it's coming from.

I think it's far-fetched and Herbert was just incompetent. Mexico is so corrupt, conspiracy theories are always flying around and their fans are very disillusioned with their federation, so they believe them capable of anything.

But anything is possible...

This report from a Mexican paper suggests the President, who has shares in media giant Televisa and so stands to lose a lot of pesos if Mexico don't qualify, and Televisa, may have been involved in paying NZ off:

http://www.jornada.unam.mx/2013/11/17/opinion/008a1pol

"A photograph of false euphoria of Enrique Peña Nieto, his wife and close to the triumph of the national team against New Zealand has a whiff of the typical corrupt arrangements that usually characterize football. If something is held in the tested image, rather than the victory of a mediocre selection, but the relief that both invested in Televisa broadcasting rights of the World Cup....

If Pena Nieto bought the election that brought him to the Presidency, if the Treasury Department bought its expenditure budget for 2014 with prices ranging between 10 and 24 million pesos per member, and the big oil lobbyists buy at the price is feathers and consciences in order to approve your energy reform , why not Televisa would buy a football match that for the selection of New Zealand meant absolutely nothing?"

Nothing there most of us don't already know. It was never all that likely we'd qualify against Mexico.
But the fascination with sport is that anything can happen on the day, and you want to see what actually unfolds, for good or ill.
But these "sporting miracles" are not so rare they happen "only once in history." Every sport has dozens of them.
Denmark won Euro 1992 after not qualifying and being invited weeks out, knocking out hosts Germany in the semi.;
Wimbledon beat Liverpool in the 1988 FA Cup Final; South Korea had a giant-killing run to the 2002 World Cup semis; Italy was knocked out of the World Cup by losing to North Korea (1966) and Slovakia (2010);
The Faroe Islands beat Austria in their very first A-international in 1990 (they didn't have a pitch so it was played in Sweden).
My team I was playing junior football for at the time, Nelson United, beat Mount Wellington on their ground in the 1977 Chatham cup Final.

Far fetched? They'd only have to pay off Ricki and he simply puts our Dad's Army and hey presto! How else can anyone logically explain Christie and Lochhead's selection? A billion dollars was at stake and we could have spoiled it all. I'm not saying it happened, but when the stakes are high enough anything is possible.
