No one has been conclusively able to rule out Hiddink? He’d definitely be an NZF preferred candidate if available. 
Hiddink is 76 years old, I can't see him on the sidelines in the Pacific Islands in that heat or doing 25hr flights to and from Europe and it would be tricky if the coach died of old age on the plane to the world cup or during the national anthem. Although his mind might not be what it used to and he could sign for NZ and think he is coaching Brazil, we could try that strategy. If you were Hiddink, what would be in it for you? Living further away from the rest of the world, even further than Austraila and living in UK/NL type weather? We could play him in the midfield I guess.

I didn't know they had fax lines down in Antarctica.  Maybe NZF has stepped up their technology game.  

But on a serious note, given they have said they had applicants from every continent, maybe they believe that and an Aussie said he was from Antarctica so he had a chance at getting the job.

Now, I also believe it’s not that hard to get out of these contracts, but I don’t think it’s as clear as Herdman re-signing with Canada vs. signing with New Zealand.

Secondly, I do think there is some merit to the idea that Herdman was using the outside interest as a bargaining chip with the CSA, but I actually expect he did it demand more resources and more money to fund the youth teams (who have been incredibly under-served during the pandemic) and get some higher profile friendlies in the few windows we’ll have for them in the next three years. I don’t think this was necessarily about improving his own financial situation and was more about his own frustration with trying to be competitive at a home World Cup with a federation that is beyond cheap and pleading poverty at every turn. 

I saw Scot Gemmill start for Scotland in a friendly at Easter Road against Canada. God I feel old.  

I find it interesting the discussion about the manager having to be based in Auckland. U.S. Soccer is based in two historic homes beside each other in Chicago. It was always a requirement of the manager to live in Chicago. Jurgen Klinsmann has been the only exception that I know of, so far, because he wouldn’t take the job if he couldn’t live in Southern California. Frankly, it makes no sense to me, particularly since the team almost never plays in Chicago and they have winter. But I bring this up because the story (which may be apocryphal) is that the US needed a new U20 manager when Tab Ramos took an MLS job and no one wanted to move to Chicago in the middle of a pandemic. So despite a calamitous run with the Colorado Rapids, Anthony Hudson was willing to move to Chicago – which is how he got the U20 job. The U20 World Cup was cancelled, they hired a proper U20 manager for this current U20 cycle, but threw Hudson a bone in Gregg Berhalter’s backroom staff with the senior national team… and now he’s the interim manager as the US cleans house following the Berhalter-Reyna mess. May we all fail upwards as well as Anthony Hudson has.

Man just reading that it seems really pathetic of Sinclair. If the organization has no money then surely they can't afford the program, thats just how it works.

I'm sure they'll be putting all the effort over the next few year into the men's team as they have a home world cup coming up that might actually make them some money.

Edit: on second reading is see that they haven't been paid for camps that they've already done, fair enough to be upset.

On another not does anyone else find to idea of getting paid to represent your nation a little weird? Maybe it's just me but I find the whole concept a bit strange.

It's more that they've had record money coming in and have absolutely fudgeing squandered it, leading to their Olympic champion highly successful womens team (who carried Canadian football on the international stage for a long time) not even getting a see-off home game before the World Cup. That's fudgeing poor, and Sinclair & co. have a right to be aggrieved about that and other cuts.

I've observed him to be a bit up himself on Sky coverage. Plus has had mixed fortunes coaching domestically (did win Southern League with Christchurch United last year though).

Just to gauge the forum's general feelings, as I'm seeing a bit of both. Would you rather;

a) take a complete flyer (Riera, Ifill, or a foreign hotshot) who while an unknown and unfamiliar with NZF is able to brand their identity on the team, or;

b) keep the status quo with an underwhelming yet consistent culture guy (Baze and Emblen, Hay pt. 2), taking both harmony and grievances that may come with having an NZF yes-man in the role?

Perhaps a bit unfair to lump Emblen in that group - I thought he did a superb job in the caretaker role, and would have willingly had him over Hudson when the opportunity was there.  Not saying he should necessarily be the coach now, but I'd be OK if he was the current caretaker too.

Not sure it's accurate to categorize Hay in with that group. He was hardly a yes man during his time as head coach.

There is always Ryan Nelsen. Putting aside his pretty average Toronto F.C stint and his partial involvement in the current debacle and his lack of interest in doing the job, he would definitely get the respect of the players and inspire the team and have the support and name recognition of the public.

All I hope is that likes of Nelsen, Wood & Bell have a huge say in who the coach is. They will have a far greater feel for what is required to coach the AWs, than likes of Pragnell, or the new HP guy who has come across from netball. I have little confidence those latter guys alone would get it right.

Why Hay was obviously a prickly character in the corridors of NZF, and he should have made more of an effort with other coaching staff - you don't want a spineless yes man. You want the best coach you can get. That may not be someone that ticks every box in the McKinnon report.

media was adamant the coach who was selected was Herdman, even after Herdmans press release. If someone else is announced everyone's going to need new sources, I don't think I've ever seen the football press all unanimously so confident about a leak.

Don't get salty! Perhaps he could just say "no thanks" and look to get into the Senior Canada squad which his father coaches. That is a bigger shop window than playing for NZ at an U20 world cup. Also playing for NZ puts him further into the NZ system who could call him up to the senior squad tomorrow and prevent him from playing for Canada ever.

AWs likely won't play a competitive game until 2025, only then would he be cap tied. Don't think playing for Olywhites at Paris 2024 (which Herdman would be a chance of doing) - will. It didn't cap tie Stensness at Tokyo. I mean bizarrely Sapreet Singh is still not cap tied to NZ!

I'm sure Herdman junior will be sharing a little joke with Bazeley, about his dad turning down the AWs role.

Also playing for NZ puts him further into the NZ system who could call him up to the senior squad tomorrow and prevent him from playing for Canada ever. 
Yep, also NZF could say "no thanks" if they felt they were being taken for a ride by either Jay or his father. Like anything, the relationship between player and country has to be mutually beneficial and built on honesty and trust. Hopefully they don't fall for another Stensness situation.

It might only be mildly interesting but it's interesting none the less.

Not sure why Jay Herdman being selected is ‘interesting’ given he got best player award at qualifiers, Canada didn’t qualify and age group representation doesn’t tie him to NZ for seniors.
Would have been more interesting had he not been selected.


Its "interesting" from the point of view he is still committed to NZ rather than deciding it's time to switch to Canada. 

Canada didn’t qualify, it doesn’t commit him to NZ beyond this, and the U20 World Cup is a shop window.

I get what you mean, but he is still a player with zero first team professional minutes, so he is a long way off making a senior Canada squad. I would not at all be surprised if that is where his long term ambitions lie though. He may well even be there in March against China, in at least the U23 (U22 really) squad because turning down any call up there would jeopardise his U20WC participation. Beyond that, he can turn down any call up NZ offers if he really wishes to. 

Cynically, I reckon his career path could well determine which country he leans to - if he's 21/22 and not really cracking it at MLS level he may well approach us, if he breaks through at Vancouver this season he could be Canadian. Players look after number one - fair enough - and will do what they need to get the outcome they want; Boyd, Stensness and possibly Jelacic next have all used the easy accessibility of the NZ youth international system.

I think NZF clearly communicated that they were going to reassess the situation after the March games, and so there would be no updates until then. I think they're hoping Bazeley does really well and they can appoint him full time then. Puts fans like us in a bit of a pickle - of course we want to see the all whites score and win at home but we know that that could condemn us to years of more mediocrity

What’s really embarrassing is the fans who think NZF should forego any integrity and privacy issues and name their preferred candidate who has agreed terms but not yet finalised contract due to the fact his [redacted] year old [redacted] has [redacted], and until [redacted] or [redacted] or otherwise, is not wanting to leave their home in [redacted], because what [redacted] really needs right now is to get hounded by mediocre journalists.

NZF have already clearly stated they would not comment on individuals and they were in no major hurry as it is about the 2026 World Cup, and even if the situation with [redacted] was not resolved after the March games, if [redacted] was still open to the offer NZF would wait until after the June window if needed.

So just to put the fans at ease OJ, you have some inside intel that the 'Standout Candidate' was not Herdman as reported by the media? 

And that the actual 'Standout Candidate' does have a genuine major family health issue, which for the moment is stopping them signing on & being announced as AWs coach? 

I genuinely hope you are correct.
