Where to Play the Qualifier

Any updates on where it is to be played. Or even when the decision  is going to announced?

Couldn't hurt to have a few media stories about the race between North Harbour and the RoF. Thinking back to the debate over to redevelop  Eden Park or build a new Auckland stadium  that happened a few years back. Better than it just being reported in a small sections Wednesdays sport section Dom post.

I'm from Christchurch and obviously we won't get it but I'd normally like it to go to Wellington as the support for the Nix has been pretty good. I think it will go to Auckalnd though which wouldnt be a bad thing as it is a huge match and it would be good to get some support up there.

I think NZ football when/if it gets the $$$$ should build a new football stadium in Auckland. Not a big one at all by any means. But one that is designed to be a home to the national team wheneveer they have a home game. It could be desinged in a way that even though it would be small, it could have seats close to the pitch like Stamford Bridge, get the crowd involved in the game and generate some kind of atmosphere. Obviously Wellington would keep the Phoenix but this could become a home for every all whites game. Only problem is the cash money $$$$.

What do you guys think??

From the FIFA site: The dates for the play-off matches for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa have been confirmed. The intercontinental showdowns between the fifth placed team in Asia and New Zealand will be played on Saturday 10 October and Saturday 14 November 2009. The draw to decide who will be home or away will be conducted on 2 June 2009 during the FIFA Congress in the Bahamas.

One issue with this. If we get the home leg on 10 October then chances are it wont be in Wellington because Westpac Stadium is booked for the Home and Garden show.

I guess the dates and venues are due to be confirmed today ...or is that tomorrow in the Bahamas?

The Bahamas are 16 hours behind us, so if they start their meeting at 9am, it'll be 1am tomorrow morning our time, so depending where on the agenda this item is, we should know when we wake up tomorrow, or at least before lunch tomorrow.

Home leg is on the the 14th.
So if Wellington gets it and we should,
November will be a top footie month in the capital
Newcastle Jets  - Nov 4
Perth Glory        - Nov 8
Big Decider        - Nov 14

In a FIFA article posted 29 May, it states that it will be either North Harbour, Waikato Stadium or the Ring Of Fire.

pardon just a little incredulous at this ,...so support for an australian team makes a venue suitable for our {NZ} national team ...hmm must be down too Wellywood  or the Gold Coast , perhaps Melbourne then ...didnt notice a whole heap of crossover support when the AWs last played in your tinnie...

If we end up playing say Bahrain or the Saudis its obvious to have it in Wellington. The winter we are having now....just imagine it, a howling southerly gale, sleet. Don't you love it. The middle east team would be coming out of mid 30's degrees. They wouldn't know what hit them.

maybe thats what the Nix game in Qtown was all about. Has someone booked the ground there for November?

Surely not even Wellington can produce sleet in the midle of November?

Then again...yeah, it probably could.

Good to see the Christchurch City Council getting in behind the idea of having the qualifier played down here.

Anyone know the seating capacity at QE II stadium? Good to see this getting some coverage. But Wellington surely has to be the front runner.

QEII has a capacity of 20 000.  If that's too small then AMI could be a better bet.  I know Auckland and Wellington are frontrunners but they don't really have any proper reason to be.

I would hope that clever pricing and marketing would get us more than 20k for this particular game.
You know we belong together...

I think you bums in Wellington deserve to have this game. Its almost a win win situation though isnt it? Either venue (auck or well) will get a good crowd for this game. I dont care either way, if its up here then its easy for me, if its down there its a great trip and a few fun nights out on the town.

Talk is they are passing a by-law here so you're not allowed.

I think the MOST importnat thing is that no matter where it is everyone travels and for the first time we have a real feel of everyone for New Zealand.

NZ v Italy this morning..one more small step toward a good result for our WC qualifiers, hopefully.
Wherever its played, I'm there.
I'm old enough to remember the buzz in the 81/82 qualifiers but never went..This time want to be right in the thick of it!

End of June was the date they said there would be a decision wasn't it. Any one heard of a date of the announcement yet. Hopefully a good showing against Iraq and South Africa, will further to enhance the hype. Can't wait to see the busstop adds.

Not quite on the topic, but it will be interesting to see what the ticket prices will be, wherever the game is played.

This is what the FFA is charging for Wednesday's clash with Japan at the MCG - remember, these are $A figures:

Category A - $122 adult

Category B - $82 adult; $42 concession / child; $206 family (2 adults, 2 children)

Category C - $52 adult; $27 concession / child; $131 family (2 adults, 2 children)

Concessions include pensioners, full-time secondary and tertiary students with valid ID.
Children are aged 4 - 16 inclusive. Children 3 years and under will be admitted free, but no seat provided.
Ticket limit is 8 per customer

Cheers,

Pricing like that here would prove once and for all that NZF have no grasp of the market they operate in.

Gee, that's some big pricing right there! Both teams have qualified anyway. Interesting to see how many go. It's a completely different ball game in Australia, with them doing so well last World Cup, and in the qualifying this time around.

Pretty sure it's the same game

They are expecting a crowd of 70,000 apparently, do the figures on that, it would fill the coffers nicely

I read a news item recently where one of the Gulf States Asian qualifiers, maybe Bahrain, offered free entry to encourage locals to fill the stadium for a crucial match!
Contrast that with Aussie pricing above for Oz v Japan. It really magnifies the huge differences in wealth of the various federations.

The challenge is for NZF to get our pricing just right..enough to boost their coffers a bit, but cheap enough to fill the stadium with cheering NZ supporters.

Correct. And just remember that a small percentage of the gate takings from Socceroo matches goes into the A-League...

Maybe they should arrange for Beckham to play for the 5th placed Asian side...

Yeah i really do think filling the stadium is more important than the money. But i know how unrealistic that is. Surely thell keep the prices low. Even if it was at the stadium and they got 29,000 the 1000 or so empty yellow seats would look Tragic.
