Spain beat Mexico 2-1 in the final by the way.

So only team NZ lost too, was tourney winners.

We did lose to Ghana... Doesn't diminish from a fantastic tournament and achievement though

Oops yes forgot about that. Did rest most of the first choice eleven for that game.

nominated for halberg sports team of year - great to see they are getting the acknowledgement they deserve.

Having just heard on the Rock FM that a 7s team won the team award, I now realise just how big a joke the Helbergs are.

The girls were the best NZ sports team of 2018 hands down and should feel robbed by this.

Supporter world's best and worst football teams: Waikato/WaiBop, Kingz, Knights, Phoenix, The Argyle, The Whites & the All Whites

They did win the 1 award voted for by the public, which shows you how out of touch the judges are. Very significant for football though that they did get the people's choice vote

Yeah should have blown the team award out of the water, struggling to realise how they didn't win. At least they took home the Sporting Moment of the Year, one that I was sure they'd be less likely to win

well whilst a great achievement they didnt win the cup  and the 7s did. Celebrate what they did and dont angst that they weren't rightly not recognized as best team.

I see the next U17 girls crop have a trip to China coming up.

Good experience for them. This, the qualifiers (not much of a battle against OFC sides for girls typically) and whatever else they come up with before India should put them on n a good place to hopefully do well in India

U17 girls to China

Good effort from the new U17 girls to come second in their mini China tournament

Squad announcement been out for a week https://www.nzfootball.co.nz/newsarticle/83488 and no comment.  Must have the right regional balance then!

Credit to Leon, He does make an effort to visit the Federations and be at junior national tournaments. That is encouraging for any girls that consider themselves fringe selections but live outside of Auckland and Wellington.

News today. That the U16 qualifying tournament for next year's U17 WC, originally scheduled for September/October, and the for December, has been postponed yet again, this time due to the measles epidemic in the region.

Feel for anyone missing out due to age limits, if they're affected

that wouldn't happen.  The Oceania tournament is U16 so that the team can carry onto the U17WC next year.

In the short-term, the interesting thing will be effect on NAGT.  Does that mean the national players will now be able to play NAGT, or perhaps does it open up the possibility of the national squad playing games against the NAGT team that has the bye.

That's what I would do.

Probably couldn't do Central as they only arrive the day of their bye after a long drive.

At the same meeting the committee also agreed to cancel both the OFC U-19 Women’s Championship and OFC U-16 Women’s Championship which were to be staged next year.

Subsequently New Zealand were nominated as the OFC participant for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2022 and FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2022, based on historical results for both competitions.

In lieu of next year’s cancelled OFC U-16 Championship, Tahiti was nominated as the host of the OFC U-16 Women’s Championship 2023.

OFC General Secretary Franck Castillo said the committee had several factors to consider in making their decisions.

“While we had hoped to run our planned calendar of events as normal next year, the ongoing challenges presented by the pandemic unfortunately mean that wasn’t a realistic option,” Castillo said.

“At the forefront of our thinking was the health and wellbeing of our young footballers.

“We also wanted to make sure that the nominated teams, in these cases New Zealand, had sufficient time to plan and prepare for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2022 and FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2022.

Anyone know if this team has any pre-tournament warm up games over in India.

As a Cantabrian, it's pleasing to see five South Island players in the side.
Bercelli is an interesting player, a Mainland Pride player in the national league the last two seasons since the age of 15, Coastal Spirit in the MPL Women, St Andrews College (Christchurch).
Since April, has been playing for Alamein FC in the Victoria Premier League (15 games, 11 starts) since she received a Tania Dalton Foundation sports scholarship (financial support for three years plus a personal mentor)
Currently completing her NCEA through correspondence school.
Born in Australia, so let's hope we can hold onto her if she turns out to be really good.
Her national league highlights for the Pride:

Mortlock, McCann, Iro and Simpson are all current Pride players.
Kiara Bercelli; Alamein FC; Mainland; Te Kura
Charlotte Mortlock; Cashmere Technical ; Mainland; Burnside High School
Ella McCann; FC Nelson; Mainland; Waimea College
Madeleine Iro; Cashmere Technical; Mainland; Christchurch Girls High School
Megan Simpson ; Nomads United AFC; Mainland; St Andrews College

Big Pete 65, Christchurch

Bercelli grew up down here in Wanaka. Moved to St Andrews College 2 or 3 years ago. She always had good vision on field that gave her that ability to link up play well. I watched a couple of Alamein FC games this year. She did ok but was played out on the left wing, where I think her skills lend more towards playing her at 10. Has worked hard to get to where she is at. Her dad is Italian so is eligible for Italy also.
But there looks like a lot of good potential in this team. Going to be lots of competition for starting spots. Interested to see how they go.

Been awhile since I've seen Waimea College player in an age group rep side! Probably the first since Brockie (who only did year 9 there).

Valley FC til I die?

Seems still a fair chunk of Girls age group players, not coming through Weenix or Ole Academy systems. Early days for having young girls at both I guess.

That's a good thing I reckon. It shouldn't be a (near) prerequisite to get into national teams that you have been in the Phoenix system like what it appears is happening on the boys' side.

It's been a close game. NZ missed some good chances and gave away a silly pen. 2-0 is a bit harsh.

Was a disappointing showing by NZ. Yes there defending was poor.
The team started nervously, lots of hesitation, a bit overawed by the occasion by the looks. But the first two goals conceded were terrible defending by us. Ball watching and standing off. Then we never really recovered from that point.
Not sure what was involved in lead up to the tournament. Not having any proper games together as a team wouldn't have helped. And they did look a bit unfamiliar with each other.
In contrast the commentator reeled off a long list of pre tournament games the Chile team has played this year. Qualification tournaments in SA, Friendly tournaments in Europe and more. And that showed.
This is not an excuse. Just a fact. And I know its hard with kids in this age group at school. NZF budget, no OFC qualifying tournament for this group.

I guess that is one of the downfalls of NZ qualifying for every age group world cup, olympics etc. It seems NZF just don't have the budget to spread araound to be sending every age group team overseas for real game pre tournament experience?

Having seen some of these players since they were 9-10 and seen them grow, that game was disappointing.

Covid hasn't helped but NZF has sold them short with lack of meaningful game time together.  Chile had at least 7 qualifying games plus reference to some in Europe as well.  We have seen in NWL how the 4 Auckland sides have had a head-start on the 4 regional sides.  I think also a lack of preparation for warmer climates.  For some I would think it was the first time they had played with a temperature in the 20s :-)

Also an interesting comment in the commentary about NZ not having the 3rd goalkeeper in India.  An injury to the 3rd keeper and the replacement not travelling or something like that.  Sounded like more penny pinching by NZF.

Given the lack of matches together, I was surprised that there was not more of an Auckland bias in the starting line up.  Particularly given the dominance of the Auckland side in that year groups NAGT when it was last held, and the dominance of Auckland sides at NZSS in 2019 and 2022, and the experience they have gained with a season or two in NRFL.

On a positive. We did create enough goal scoring opportunities. And at the end shots and shots on goal were pretty even between the two teams. Chile's third goal was a bit of a screamer too.
Just seems our general play was more reactive than proactive.

Highlights here.

We were just very poor all over. Not fast enough, not Street wise, could make 2 passes, didn't seem to have a clear direction.
