Im going to annoy all you TV1 haters, but we record both sports news and watch them one after another in my flat and TV1 did a much better job while the team was in Austria. Probably just because they had the guy there with them but still TV3 didn't send their European Correspondent so TV1 win.

good to see TV1 lifting their game - makes sense considering their investment in coverage

let's hope TV3, Prime and Maori TV lift their news efforts as the Cup gets closer

TV 1 had enough coverage but the 'spin' as it has been described was something along the lines of: [firstly by the presenter] that the forward line was struggling and the backline was in dissarray [I'm paraphrasing here] and then the reporter on the ground prattling on about how we needed to lift our performance. It immediately struck me as a piece being written by someone that knew stuff all about football and trying to find a negative angle. Everything they said was contradicted by immediately showing Fallon scoring a goal, woods thwarted effort and Ricki being interviewed and saying we were doing really well. 1-2, 1-0, 1-3 against highly ranked opposition.... oh forget it, we all know the truth don't we?

agree totally, this was exactly what I vented to my hubbie at the time....
i've learnt my lesson - watch TV3

Don't you all still pay a TV licence in NZ? Or at least taxes toward TV production.

I have to take back what I said about Craig Stanaway. Thought he did a sterling job on tonights news. Crossed to him in SA after they did the queens bday honors. 4 min story. Then back again first item in the sports news.

Flicked over to 3 and they were talking tennis, rugby then the AWs.   I missed their main news. Did they have an extra story?

Not sure about the tv licence Traitor, I thought it was added into the cost of buying a television. But I'm pretty sure I'm wrong about that.

Three are kind of screwed as TVNZ have the rights and therefore TV3's access to any official FIFA stuff is negligible.

Why is it that Sky can have 4 extra channels devoted to the Winter Olympics but can't even have one for the WC?
Permalink Permalink
almost 16 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
Because there are a thousand sport going on at the same time.  All games are live on Sky so there isn't exactly a need for a new channel.

Do they even know it's on?

I must be one of the few who still watch one news

Am I right in thinking there was a channel dedicated to the 2002 World Cup, or am I tripping?

I think they introduced SS3 for the WC and kept it from there. 2ndBest2010-06-07 21:09:29

Why do TVNZ buy the rights to broadcast WC matches, and then broadcast so little about it in their news bulletins? silly people.

-e- on another note, there's a good write up by Tony Smith on the general media riot going on as teams touch down in SA:

TVNZ are certainly putting in a lot of advertising. It would be hard for anyone to not know that the WC was coming up and that the AWs were playing.

Not a fan of Stanaway or TVNZ in general, but I don't think they are covering things poorly at the moment.

Will start to be more judgemental when the WC kicks off. SOON!

Are you able to tell us what you are and aren't allowed to do as a non-rights holder?

Example was Stanaway being allowed into the AWs base because he was a rights holder or because he asked nicely?

Sorry if this rakes over old coals, but I noticed on the Stuff website the following article headline:

"An idiot's guide to World Cup"

Author: Eric Young

It's not often that SST gets things right (even if unintentionally)

It then prompted me to search for ML's HoG Blog

Essentially, as non rights holders we're not able to enter any "FIFA zones" i.e. stadiums and team hotels.

Basically we're unable to attend the captain's run and press conference at the stadium the day before the match, and can't take a camera into the ground on the day of the match.

My understanding though is that we WILL be allowed entry to where the All Whites are staying in Johannesburg because it's not a FIFA hotel - it was sourced by NZF themselves. So as far as i'm aware, TVNZ shouldn't have "exclusive" access to Serengeti.

That must suck for you - what do you do, wander around streets of Johannesburg hoping to see some All Whites and not get shot in the process?

You are welcome at Cedar Park. White Noise media policy provides for full and equal access for all networks and media stables.

Dude, that sucks. Perhaps White Noise should give non-rights holders exclusive access. Enjoy the trip, look forward to your reports!

This is not fact.

Phil Kitchin, Paul Henry and John Campbell are not welcome.

Neither is Billy Harris, but that's more because he fails the required IQ entry standard.

Wouldn't that prohibit most of White Noise from getting in?

Have Radio Sport not sent Chotey over to do the calls with Piney?

I enjoy Miles but I hope he remembers that he is broadcasting to NZ not England.

Miles and Piney have some mini-podcast thing available on radiosport.co.nz
