Now i know you're all upset about tv3's coverage etc ... I leave for SA on Friday. Lets just say broadcasting from the world cup is not a cheap exercise
cheers
Are you able to tell us what you are and aren't allowed to do as a non-rights holder?
Example was Stanaway being allowed into the AWs base because he was a rights holder or because he asked nicely?
Essentially, as non rights holders we're not able to enter any "FIFA zones" i.e. stadiums and team hotels.
Basically we're unable to attend the captain's run and press conference at the stadium the day before the match, and can't take a camera into the ground on the day of the match.
My understanding though is that we WILL be allowed entry to where the All Whites are staying in Johannesburg because it's not a FIFA hotel - it was sourced by NZF themselves. So as far as i'm aware, TVNZ shouldn't have "exclusive" access to Serengeti.
Andrew... you know I respect you enormously. I just think though this is a defeatist attitude by TV3... it is the only major New Zealand news organisation that does not have a presence over here at the moment and its noticable. Even Crowd Goes Wild is here. Despite being rights holders, we have really, really struggled to do things. We are working extremely hard.... probably harder than we should be because of this "expectation we are rights holders so it's easier for us to deliver" We can't just rely on being rights holders to deliver the stories because it doesn't happen. A hell of a lot of hard work is going on behind the scenes. But it is true, One News is the only organisatation that will broadcast live from the All Whites training base for the duration of the tournament.
On One News tonight we will have Simon Elliott live with reaction to Tim Brown.... we will also show you all the different central midfield combinations Ricki Herbert employed during the Chile game. Tv3 would have had no problem getting into this morning's game. But they weren't there. Neither was CGW. We could have saved ourselves the 4+ hour drive going there and back and found something else to do knowing our major competitor was not going to be there but we still did it. We're committed.
Regarding getting into the AW base camp.... security is incredible. Everyone else has been thrown out and has been told not to come back. We have worked extremely hard to build a relationship with Serengetti to bring those live crosses to our audience. Around 3 months work's gone into it.
That being said, it's not the same without you here at the moment. I look forward to seeing you and Billy when you come over.
