This is not fact.

Phil Kitchin, Paul Henry and John Campbell are not welcome.

Neither is Billy Harris, but that's more because he fails the required IQ entry standard.

Must be a pretty low standard, you didn't exclude Murray Deaker

Or Dave Burgess ...

I like Miles too. Think he would go bonkers if we'd won a game.

That's not to say I don't like Chote & Piney commentary team. They are awesome.

I think the Media Angst to end all Media Angst is why was this morning's game broadcast in Chile and the internet when it was suppose to be closed? If the Chileans could get in, why couldn't Sky? I know it was a training match, but hell, they broadcast school boy rugby for ffs! Rant over.

Are you able to tell us what you are and aren't allowed to do as a non-rights holder?

Example was Stanaway being allowed into the AWs base because he was a rights holder or because he asked nicely?

Essentially, as non rights holders we're not able to enter any "FIFA zones" i.e. stadiums and team hotels.

Basically we're unable to attend the captain's run and press conference at the stadium the day before the match, and can't take a camera into the ground on the day of the match.

My understanding though is that we WILL be allowed entry to where the All Whites are staying in Johannesburg because it's not a FIFA hotel - it was sourced by NZF themselves. So as far as i'm aware, TVNZ shouldn't have "exclusive" access to Serengeti.

Andrew... you know I respect you enormously.  I just think though this is a defeatist attitude by TV3... it is the only major New Zealand news organisation that does not have a presence over here at the moment and its noticable.  Even Crowd Goes Wild is here.  Despite being rights holders, we have really, really struggled to do things.  We are working extremely hard.... probably harder than we should be because of this "expectation we are rights holders so it's easier for us to deliver"  We can't just rely on being rights holders to deliver the stories because it doesn't happen.  A hell of a lot of hard work is going on behind the scenes.  But it is true, One News is the only organisatation that will broadcast live from the All Whites training base for the duration of the tournament.

On One News tonight we will have Simon Elliott live with reaction to Tim Brown.... we will also show you all the different central midfield combinations Ricki Herbert employed during the Chile game.  Tv3 would have had no problem getting into this morning's game.  But they weren't there.  Neither was CGW.  We could have saved ourselves the 4+ hour drive going there and back and found something else to do knowing our major competitor was not going to be there but we still did it.  We're committed.

Regarding getting into the AW base camp.... security is incredible.  Everyone else has been thrown out and has been told not to come back.  We have worked extremely hard to build a relationship with Serengetti to bring those live crosses to our audience.  Around 3 months work's gone into it.

That being said, it's not the same without you here at the moment. I look forward to seeing you and Billy when you come over.

Mate, I've just watched that story and I cannot for a moment see how you could consider it racist.

In fact, I found the story really interesting.  I think Stannaway did well, and gave us a bit of an insight into what Joburg townships can be like.

You want to be careful about throwing about allegations of racism.  In this case, it just doesn't stack up and makes you look pretty silly.

@CraigStanaway - cheers for coming in and putting your views across. Most commendable.

@Terminator - if that's the piece I saw the other night where Craig was mobbed by a bunch of dark skinned people in the market, how the hell was that racist?

@MurrayDeaker - your Deaker on Sport just replayed on Sky just now. I didn't catch the whole show but in the last 20-30 minutes you dedicated 10 seconds - yes TEN SECONDS to the World Cup. You asked Rikki Swannell @RadioSport to sum up our chances - "in ten seconds".

I think you were in too much of a hurry to ask the next question of how you can become a metrosexual...

Permalink Permalink

Smithy - it even got commented on during Deaker last night, of all places.

EDIT: Ahmad, it was earlier in the show during about a 10 min piece on the World Cup. From memory all three guests agreed it was racist.

Can you imagine how pissed off people here would be if a white South African journalist took a camera crew to Otara and just because a few youngsters gathered round and jumped up and down he then sent a story back to SA basically running the line "Polynesians are scary, I felt threatened".

This is just another example of the casual stereotyping that reinforces racism. Just for yours and Stanaway's information it is criminals you need to watch out for in South Africa, not black people. There's a difference.

Not racist.

I don't think Deaker on Sport can be taken as any authority now when it comes to Race Relations somehow.

It's great to have Craig and Andrew come on here to see what fans think of their coverage, and for the most part we are harsh critics. That comes, as far as I'm concerned, from years of rugby being all over the media, and football getting little media time. That's the nature of living in New Zealand, but the most pathetic story will lead the sport if it has anything to do with rugby. As a result even rugby fans have rugby fatigue.

I think in the last week I've seen even more football in the media, which is fantastic. The All Whites have even been on the front page of the Waikato Times twice this week, which is incredible (great World Cup guide inside today too!).

Damn it, Sonny Bill is leading 3News sport... and on One News... much better!

It's nonsense like this which made me give up reading this forum in the first place.  The first thing that comes to your mind, despite us running six football stories from South Africa this week, and offering more comprehensive tv coverage on the All Whites than anywhere else is to run tvnz down.  Mate we're putting a bit of effort to show the real South Africa.  No credit, just the good old kiwi knocking machine.

And to essentially wish out loud that it would have been good if we got attacked is actually pretty disgusting.

Well done. You are doing a terrific job.

So are the other media channels though as well. I am just absolutely loving the fact that you open the paper and football is the headline most days. It is great. Only hope it can last.

Also, don't really see how the article was racist. simon_hampton2010-06-10 20:42:58

Craig.

In the past I've knocked you and TVNZ in general re football coverage. You'll note I haven't done so for the World Cup and what you are sending through is good (and I hope there is much more to come in a couple of days time).

However I do agree somewhat with term-X (not the attacking bit which I take to be tongue in cheek). The piece came across as "we got lost, we ended up in a township full of blacks, it was scary" but the camera shots showed just inquisitve locals who didn't look threatening at all.

Then you start talking to the police - "what would happen to us if you weren't here etc". I'm not denying that you felt threatened or unsafe but it did come across as rather strange.

If you were uncomfortable why didn't you get back into your car and keep driving with your escort?

Anyway. It's the football that I want to watch you/TVNZ for - not any social commentary on SA. There's always the pinko John Pilger for that sort of thing or Ross Kemp trying to set up meetings with no-show gang leaders or pirates.

Keep up the good work.

Craig, thanks again for returning to comment. You have to have thick skin - you being in the media don't need me to tell you that.

I am relatively new to football and the forums and I know people are very passionate and opinionated here, but I for one try to give credit where it is due (and I know others do too).

On one night I'll be annoyed at TV One placing the AWs back in the bulletin (I know that is not your editorial decision), but at the same time I (and others) do commend you guys when we have been happy with a story/coverage.

Anyway I would just say to try and ignore non-constructive comments - we are probably just having a vent. But do take on board the positive feedback of course!

Can you please elaborate on the situation about the game played last night? Someone distracted me and I missed out on what you said about the status of the game and why it was initially a closed session but ended up being open you to and the public?

Oh no, no. We are totally stoic and very balanced!

If you look at term-x's reply it's actually constructive in explaining the context for his remark re racist. I myself wouldn't classify it as racist (in its intent) but there was quite a good thread on this re the KFC ads in an off topic thread.

Craig's response was more of a vent (I can understand his frustration but it was a vent nonetheless- he needs to lighten up a bit!).
