Oughton was very good agaist wales, going back a bit now, but 10 years pro in MLS vs some other members. Please someone get the truth out of Rikki why he isnt going. Also taking amateurs is pretty embarresing isnt it. We left out pro's too.

This guy has a great point.

Rickis logic got us to the world cup, yours didnt.
End of story.
What managerial decision did Ricki make that got us to the World Cup? 5-3-2 perhaps? Hardly brilliant logic.

Agreed. I also think you'd take a beating.

I'm over this argument tbh. Feel sorry for Duncan he probably deserved a better look, but I trust Ricki's judgement.

getting to the world cup without playing a competitive game in,what 18 months, means the lad has done more than just kiss Ricki's derriere...

In reality Christie, Mulligan, Clapham will get no game time

Good points, and that's why I'd've taken a couple more players for developmental purposes, rather than Christie and Mulligan, who are essentially tried-and-faileds.

I do, however, feel that Clapham will probably get some time on the pitch, and wouldn't be at all surprised if he doesn't get picked-up up by a pro-club as a result. He's got the ability to keep possession and use it sensibly, which is like gold here in NZ and a prerequisite for the modern game.

In fact, it could easily be the Nix who sign him.

Have to say that Christie and Mulligan would not have been in my 50, but saw an interview on SBS with Steve Sumner on Sunday and he rated Clapham. That is good enough for me. Will look forward to seeing him play even if it is not is SA

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

im surprised about herbert's comments re clapham wide on the right.

There is a bit of a fashion right now for the wide playmaker.  doesn't need to have the defensive responsibility of the central midfielders who really aren't going to get forward at all, but can influence the play, think modric, gerrard when he plays there for England etc.  More of a starting position than  an end point, and not really a winger as such.  Can work well if you have an overlapping fullback to support you

Not trying to tell people what to write about but the squad is picked now, perhaps we should try and move the discussion forwards about how we see this group lining up.

I guess the big talking points about the team has been about the fringe players like Mulligan and Plodder. However if you look at the potential first team plus the bench this is definitely one of the All Whites best teams ever.
In past years there have been many amatuers making up the team. However when you look at the AW's of 2010 the team is stacked with experianced professionals.

in the defense we have Nelsen...EPL, Vicilich...7 years Dutch Div 1, Reid....Denmark Div 1 and Danish age group international, Tommy Smith....Championship level with Ipswich and England age group internationa, Boyens.....MLs.
In attack we have 3 strikers with Championship level clubs.

Then there is Elliot...ex Fulham and MLS.

You then can add the A-League pro's including double Golden boot winner Smeltz and you have a team made up of guys who are full time professionals.

I am very excited about this team. The first eleven looks very good. They will be disiplined, well organised and hard to break down. When you look at the WC team just announced by Slovakia...they have two names that stand out as quality players. Skrtel from 7th place Liverpool and the playmaker from Napoli. But the rest of them mostly play in a scattering of midlevel clubs in Europe. We can respect these guys but we don't need to fear them.
Bring it on!!!!!!!

Having looked at the 23's individual pics in the Dom Post today I think Herbert cd have selected his team on hairdos...

19 short back and sides
2 (Vicelich & Mulligan) with almost shdlr length
2 (Reid & Killen) with maybe a No.3
Must be a bias against skinheads and ponytails

How is Elliott going at the moment, is he still training with the galaxy??

Does he have any clubs lined up???

Although in saying that, I wouldn't be surprised to hear that Elliott decides to retire after the WC. Going and playing at the WC would be the pinnacle of his career and a great way to end at 35 years of age.

For example because the goals conceded stats I use and the ones he uses are different I suppose? My ones are useless and his are some how relevant? Double Standards I suppose.

No surprises there and as has been said Ricki has obviously decided that Duncan Oughton is not his cup of tea. I think Jason Hayne is unlucky, but who could you leave out? All the others deserve a chance, especially Kris Bright who has finished the season well with Shrewsbury.
I would have had Jake Gleeson in for Spoonley myself, but then again I'd've had Gleeson in the squad instead of Jim Bannatyne or Glen Moss. I still don't see the sense in taking Moss to be honest, there should be no room for sentiment.
Nix, Leyton Orient and Alloa Athletic supporting schmuck.

I find it interesting that theres been a lot of debate about Moss going and not much about Tommy Smith.

Whilst he will no doubt strengthen the team, I have trouble considering him a Kiwi. He was born in England, emigrated to NZ stayed about 5 years then went back to England and played for English rep teams  - hardly the move of someone who considers himself a Kiwi.

I know he meets the "official"  criteria but I can'thelp but think that he realises he'll never play for England so NZ is a good second choice.

And yeah I know that the 82 team was full of similar stories, but we have progressed since then....

Played for New Zealand secondary schools so at least has some history here.  Those performances are what got him the deal at Ipswich.

How's my driving? - Whine here

I think if he hadnt played for the England teams I wouldnt have a problem with him.....but i guess in him doing that,  it sounds like an English lad who just happened to live abroad for a few years.

I'm eligible for 3 countries but there is only one I want to play for.....

I couldn't give a sh*t where they came from. If they're eligible and keen, get them into the team! Widen our talent pool as it's not that big to start with.

I don't see the problem. Ricki had to pick the best players available, and Smith was available. As far as FIFA are concerned, he's a Kiwi. As long as he gives 100%, I'm happy to to have him play for the All Whites.

THis happens all over the world. No reason to feel shy about it. In fact, Smith, Reid and Mcg have strong connections c/w what goes on elsewhere.

Permalink Permalink
almost 16 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
Of the three, I think WeeMac has the most tenuous connection and he was born here - that makes him pretty eligible!

Just a bit of trainspotting .....

In 1982, half the NZ squad that went to the World Cup was born outside New Zealand.

In 2010, just 3 of the 23 squad members were born outside New Zealand: Smeltz (Germany), Smith and Mulligan (England).

Interesting in this time of greater player movement, and much-publicised (and, in some quarters, much-criticised) "changes of nationality" that our squad at this year'e World Cup is much more of a truly Kiwi sqaud than in 1982, when it had a significant group of players prepared to travel the world looking for a football break.

The majority of the "international" players in the team are simply playing for their place of birth.

And the twon/city where the greatest number of squad members were born? NO prizes for getting it right: Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand in football as well as Government, with 7. Auckland - 2nd with 4!

Even with Brown making it four thats a great effort- haven't we come a long way!!! And as others have pointed out, there's a lot of other countries who are selecting players with tenuous links to the country they are representing
