By the way, who do you prefer as a goalkeeper? I think Paston should be n.1, he seemed really cold-blooded  during both matches in the Play-off, and that would be really important in the WC, although Moss did well in the Confederations Cup.

As I know Paston probably wouldn't be going to the World Cup through injury and Moss will miss 2 first games at WC through disqualification. So bad

I thought FIFA had offered NZF a chance to make another appeal against the rest of the Moss suspension. (NZF missed the first window to appeal soon after the Moss incident happened, otherwise we wouldn't still be faced with this problem.)

And what happens if Paston and Moss both go down? I'm sure Bannatyne is a great bloke, and a competent keeper, but is he really up to WC standard?

No, NZF said they were going to FIFA to see if they could re appeal, not the other way around

RE: TOMMY SMITH, IPSWICH TOWN (NEW ALL WHITE):

Does anyone know his NZ background....how long was he here? who did he play for...NZ u17?

Tommy lived here between the ages of 8- 16 and was initially in the NZ u-16 squad (no full internationals) before moving back to England to join Ipswich. He played here for Westlake Boys Highschool, North Shore United and Takapuna and was spotted by someone with Ipswich connections while playing for Westlake Boys in 2004. He had three trial periods as a youth player at Ipswich before signing full pro terms in July 2007. See this NZ Herald report on his NZ youth career and signing for Ipswich from 2007:

I watched the Xmas day replay of the November 14th match and it reminded me what a fantasticv game he had.  On the end of chances and ran himself ragged chasing Bahraini defenders up and down the pitch.

Plus his 19th minute scissor kick that hit the woodwork - best shot of the fixture (excluding Fallon's header, I suppose  )

When that shot cannoned back off the cross bar I nearly shat myself thinking it had gone in. What a goal that would have been.

Interesting quotes from Ricki in the Sunday News this morning, saying his World Cup squad is "80% finished".

This goes against what has been said previously, with RH saying all 18 from November 14 v Bahrain, plus Moss, plus Tommy Smith would be going - that's 20 of the 23 players allowed or 87% ... I know it's just a number, but I wonder if there might be one or two from the 18-man Bahrain squad who perhaps might not be dead-set certainties on the plane to SA.

Mulligan, Scott, Boyens, Barron....??

But as we discussed at lunch the other day Feverish, who goes instead ?

We could only name 23 or 24 even remotely in with a chance.

Mulligan has to be left behind. That leaves the 17 others from the Bahrain game + Moss and Smith makes 19. You'd also have to consider whether Scott and Barron should really go. If Reid joins up (Very unlikey IMO) then you'd probably aso have to leave behind a central defender (Ivan, Siggy or Boyens). That gives you a squad of 17 to 19 to which I'd definately add Oughton and at least one who can play on the wing (Costa or Brockie probably). Then there's James, who'd make it simply because he can play as an attacking central midfieder. Then you cna only add up to 3 players, and those would probably all come from the NZFC.
You know we belong together...

I think Barron deserves his spot.  Wouldn't take Bannatyne if Moss wins his appeal unless you have to have 3 goalkeepers.

You do, and even if you didn't you'd be mad to take only two - what if one got injured?

Reminds me of the 2007 U20 World Cup when Stu Jacobs in his infinite wisdom only took two keepers (Spooners and Keene) so Rowdy Roddy Brown had to be designated as the 3rd keeper and didn't see a minute of game time.

Three for me, and two for them.

I can only see Mulligan being left out from the Bahrain squad. We need the cover that Scott provides wide defensivly. I'm hoping Old makes the squad. Surely an SPL regular MUST be ahead of an NZFC regular and A-League non-bench player. Brookie must be close too. Three keepers is a must and Banners is all but assured tho Spoonly will be pushing hard.
What is James doing these days. I'd have him if he's playing regular football.

Its no longer a problem.

Write off Reid and confirm Boyens. I'd also have Scott ahead of Coombes and Oughton over Hayne.

Its no longer a problem.

More correctly Oar just broke his leg. That was a dreadful tackle from behind and in any other league would have earned Oar a red card.

How far away is the world cup? anyone still think he has a chance of making it? ..feel for the guy, he had played his way into the team for sure over the past few weeks.

big call to say he played his way into the team.  He will miss the Mexico game, and with the a-league finishing up he may not have any opportunities to prove himself.

there's no way he will be able to get fit enough to prove himself before the squad is named. Poor guy, although now he can say he would've been picked if he didn't break his leg.

He's plenty young enough to play in the next 2 or 3 world cups, or at least their qualifiers.

hardly comforting though,

sorry mate, you can come with us to the WC, but don't worry we will play you in future quaifiers and hopefully another WC, should we get there again with the next 27 years.

He's problay lying in bed dreaming of killing Zullo!!

Didn't Ricki mention an australasian only game for A-League/NZFC players. He may have a chance for that, and I'm sure that game will be treated as a trial S.O.N2010-01-25 21:28:04

what's happened to Chris James? can't find anything about where he is now? I know he had that trial with MK Dons but haven't heard anything?

He is a good player I can't see why he can't get a contract. Maybe he thinks he's better than he is and isn't going for the right teams.

He should be looking at playing for anyone so he get's a chance to be included for the AW's

Scotty's a gun a club level, but can't seem to translate that to International success. Not sure if he'll make the Oz squad, but Pim will take him 'to be safe' is my guess.
