How much is he paying to be in their squad (and not play) just to say he plays for ACFC

The Rieralucion is back at City.

A for awesome! Albert - A-league - Auckland City. The Stirling Sports Premiership just got even better to watch.

Ramon confirms that Tade, De Vries and Moreira are back. Lea'alafa will be back after his Futsal World Cup tour, with Nic Berry and Clayton Lewis also joining up soonish.

I've been researching Auckland's new Basque goalie Enaut Zubikarai from Real Sociedad.

Decent pedigree - as recently as 2014-15 season he made 16 appearances in la Liga for Sociedad (a Basque country team).

2013-14: was their preferred keeper in Copa del Rey games on the way to the semi-final.

2009 - 2010: Twelve appearances in winning the Second Division.

His dad spent decades in jail for involvement in Basque terrorist activities with ETA (no suggestion he was ever involved himself - but some sources suggest it may have hindered his career since clubs outside the Basque region were reluctant to sign him).

(Near end of report):

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=11703522

"Their major new signing is Spanish goalkeeper Enaut Zubikarai, who spent more than a decade in the Real Sociedad system. For long spells, he was a reserve keeper -- for a time behind Chilean stopper Claudio Bravo, who has since turned out for Barcelona and Manchester City -- but still made 46 La Liga and Copa del Rey appearances, including games against Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Valencia.

The 32-year-old Zubikarai, who also played in the Champions League, made five appearances for Tondela in the Portuguese first division last season."

His career stats: http://int.soccerway.com/players/enaut--zubikarai--goni/61059/

2014-15 season: 16 la Liga appearances; 4 Champions League appearances

2013-14: Was Sociedad's preferred goalkeeper in the Copa del Rey in a run to the semi-final (8 games).

2010: played 12 times in winning the Second Division in Spain

His bio: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E%C3%B1aut_Zubikarai

His dad was jailed for 30 years for terrorist activities with Basque separatist group ETA, involved in the murder of two Civil Guards.

Of all the foreigners coming to this league and taking places Kiwis could have, this one is the most mind boggling. Plenty of good keepers around.

Really not that many who make it as professionals though - and most of the decent ones are already attached to SS Premiership clubs.

Scott Basalaj failed at Partick Thistle reserves and he's considered one of our better keepers.

Jacob Spoonley let Auckland down badly at last year's Club World Cup, gifting two goals to the opposition, and has barely played for City since.

This new Spanish keeper has played at a level way beyond any keepers in the SS Premiership and could make a difference in the Club World Cup. Worth a punt for Auckland I think...

Am I right thinking ES midfield will be Burfoot, Payne & Dyer? Probably the most All Whites playing for Suburbs since Leggy's day.

Where is the relevance to your comment "B Grade Foriegners"?

Are you saying the Phoenix have no obligation to Youth because there are privately owned as opposed to SSP teams who are not?

I just question what NZF spends on a competition which basically qualifies a non-English speaking team to try and reignite their past careers. I don't think that is unreasonable, cynical perhaps. This isn't a huge complaint just not a huge fan.

No the Phoenix don't have an obligation to develop NZ Footballers.

Was at ACFC vs Suburbs tonight.

Highlights of the game are the ref basically ignoring Auckland's pleas for free kicks, which is probably why they failed dismally to control the game. Suburbs basically played a side that looked not too dissimilar to their NRFL team for the second half.

Cynical, and possibly a bit racist.

Since the Club World Cup was revamped in 2005 there have been 3 Oceania teams qualify for it Auckland City (7 times), Waitakere United (twice) & Heraki United from PNG (once). Auckland City have bought in US$7 million in prize money , while Waitakere United have bought in US$1million.

NZF rules allow the participant clubs to keep 50% of the winnings. The rest gets split between the other "franchises", and NZF. I think NZF takes 10-15%, even if it's 10% that's $800k over the last 10 years (80k a year) and NZF has done nothing to promote the local game until last year when they managed to get it on Sky.

Meanwhile Auckland has become one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world and Auckland City Football Club probably portrays that

This is more or less the original question I was asking, thank you for the insight. I do not mean to be derogatory, from a relative outsider it appears as if they just import footballers for a few months. Hence why I was asking the question.

I was at the Suburbs/Auckland game last night and whilst it is only a pre-season game it was probably the owrst Auckland display I have seen in three years of watching them. yes Suburbs bullied them a little in the first half but were certainly the better team (and they still have Burfoot to add to their midfield yet). Second half Auckland had a lot more of the ball but couldnt out their few chances away and just didnt look comfortable!

Its going to be a very interesting season as a lot of teams will now fancy their chances against Auckland and I fully expect to see a highly competative league.
