Hello. I am a Waikato fan and would be interested to hear Canterbury fans' views of their teams prospects ahead of Sunday's match against what will be relatively raw and unproven opposition.
In your view, how strong is this year's Canterbury team compared to previous years? And will the absence of a couple of players, as noted in the NZFC preview, make a significant difference?
As for Waikato, from my view, if they play badly, Canterbury could again find themselves 4-0 up very quickly. On the other hand, if they play well to their possession style, Canterbury could be chasing the ball for protracted periods.
If fit, Mike Thompson will be a handful for Canterbury defenders. And don't be fooled by the slight stature of some of the Waikato kids - loads of them are just kids - they are very skilful.
But having said that, I expect Canterbury to start as favourites, unless there is something i don't know.
Early days yet but overall more depth in the squad this season with players fighting fot position across the park which mean we have a far stronger bench compared to 2010. Also look to have better attacking options this season, with big George looking the goods . Hopefully with Cole in the squad Aaron will lift in the midfield as I felt he was poor last season compared to the previous one, if he whats to play in a higher leg he need to make a mark week in week out in the ASB Prem League.
For any team to challenge either of the two Auckland sides they need to be consistant from week to week, which is an area Canterbury has yet to achieve.
Should be a good game looking forward to it. If you believe the TAB odds then Waikato no chance but I think it could be close if Canty do not settle early, no doubt Waikato will be the better for their first run the other week.
