ACFC 4 Bay 1

I was running the twitter for ACFC today and must confirm a correction. My contact at the ground missed ACFC's 1st goal Mikel Alvaro scored in the 5th minute the other 4 are correct.

Just confirming Kyle King was the goal scorer for Hawke's Bay today.

Brad Hickling and Kyle King signed from Team Taranaki...
Angell did well last year with a brand new squad, appears he is going to have to do it again.

I guess the deeper lying question is: Why does he have to assemble a new squad?
Grumpy old bastard alert
There has long been conjecture that he is a bit of a prat and that last year, local players didn't want to play for him along with the untidy way HBU handled the Greatholder coaching exit. So he was forced to go elsewhere to get players and did a pretty good job if results are anything to go by. This year he has lost most of those players, in the main they have gone off to other clubs [bearing in mind that most of these guys hadn’t any ASB experience until he signed them]. I haven’t heard anything about how he was regarded by the team last year so don’t know if he has driven some of them away or not. I would imagine though that he won’t have too much problem in recruiting new talent that want a chance at that level and an opportunity to put themselves in the shop window of the Auckland clubs or Wellington. Would be great to get the hot oil from someone a little closer to the action than me.
That's how I understand it NP but the obvious problem is HBU looking outside the region for players while HB players are going elsewhere. Surely a concern for the board
Fuck this stupid game

Also, is there any word on where Tom Biss has signed? I know they haven't signed anyone bar Milne from City Rovers but if they could nab Biss that would be good.

Last I heard he was moving to England so hasn't signed with anyone
Anendra wrote something in the local rag recently that talked about the likes of Hoyle and Tinsley deciding to go elsewhere because 'they didn't think they were shown enough respect' during the recruiting process. I think it entailed them having to trial for the team. The overall impression I got was that some of these guys were being prima donnas whereas I think it was Fergus Neill gave a footballing reason for his going back to Waikato and I think someone else might have given one too.

I agree NP, from what i saw of Hoyle in the Chatham Cup Semi and Final he was hardly a stand out, him along with Kilkolly seem to be a bit ahead of themselves as neither have actually proved themselves at ASB level, if they had already done so then you could raise question about the trial process. Was Hoyle actually approach by HBU? as i have seen on social media that he said that he was never approached which again raises questions as too why he is popping off, "Hawkes Bay have never spoken to me"
If I recall correctly, that article quoted him saying he hadn't been approached by HBU but in the same breath said that they had contacted him through Bill Robertson [his coach at NCR]. So more like he didn't get a direct and personal approach from Angel. To my mind it is perfectly acceptable for your club coach to put out the feelers on behalf of the franchise and if he had said 'I'm interested' then the franchise would surely get in touch with him. My reading of the situation as that his toys went straight out of the cot because Angel didn't approach him first. I can take or leave the trial process but can see the advantage in having one in the HBU situation. I think I said before that NCR skipper Danny Wilson said he wasn't worried about participating in a trial and that probably shows a strength of character that he has and makes Hoyle's response a little precious.
I get that there is a lot of loyalty to Greatholder and while the articles in the paper last year showed signs that he really was treated badly by the franchise management during and after the season, how can the franchise management consider this situation to be any better?
I maintained that last year was a fluke cause I don't believe that HBU were the 2nd best team in the league. If you have a coach that players would travel out of town so they can play at that level specifically not for him then that points to exactly where the problem is.
Consider the alternative - NCR just won CL and runner up in the Chatham Cup...

i'm hugely impressed by danny wilson's attitude towards trialing in among all of the angst from nothing more than a bunch of football tourists wanting a free OE

At the same time he managed to attract some pretty handy players to come and play for him last season, possibly more so then Gratholder had done previously.
Spotted Wade Randle captaining the Manawatu united youth team. Guess he wasn't resigned.
The young left back from last season, Sean Liddicoat has been resigned from what I've been told.

On the Tinsley subject, rumour has it WaiBop throwing a decent whack of cash for him and the Hoyle brothers, so part of the reason they have decided to leave, HB couldn't stump up with anywhere near that kind of money
Waibop United is reputed to have had the lowest overall budget (in terms of its balance sheet) of all franchises last summer, running on $180,000, as was reported at a recent meeting of club reps.
And given its ground hire this season will include the bulk of home matches at Waikato Stadium - and no reason to believe the entity's income has surged - it would be perversely funny to think that Waibop has outbid anyone for expensive out-of-towners.
To cover what would otherwise have been an operational deficit, Waibop relied on a written-off "loan" from the federation (which I support, because it socialises the cost of national league across the rump of the game).
But let's not be lulled into thinking Waibop have loads of cash for player reimbursements.
However if they can outbid rival entities, on a "budget" budget, well, respect.

Waibop Football Fund? $1 pledge for every win? draw? goal scored? yellow/red card? ....

Any updated word on signings? so far it appears we have around 5 players 'officially' signed from what I've heard and read. Hopefully this is just the ones we know about and more have actually been signed as most teams are getting full now..

HBU 2-1 winners over WaiBop, Hamish Watson with both the goals, few trialists for HBU looked a decent side.
not bad results in pre season so far for what appears to be another team of nobodies. 0-0 with Wellington and 2-1 win of Waibop.
It seems that HBU does have a team after all. This is the team list from this morning's Hawkes Bay Today newspaper - full article here

Fantastic to see a couple of Taranaki lads in there.... Only a 10-hour round trip via the Forgotten Highway, through Whangamomona. Excellent. Well done to all parties in going the "extra distance" to mine the best talent across the whole Central plateau.
my frikkin good lord, just watching on the tele brett angel didn't even know his players names and wasn't sure who was starting and on the bench

yeah, terrible surface
thank god it rained so the ball at least could be whipped about unlike on sunday
Well, I hope that HBU will be buying Jacob Spoonley several beers tonight
incredibly well organised. he's got a good midfield 3 in there too
WaiBOP were the better side. Some how HBU seem to get the points though. Go figure. Shoulda lost to ACFC and did not deserve a win here.
