WaiBOP were the better side. Some how HBU seem to get the points though. Go figure. Shoulda lost to ACFC and did not deserve a win here.

Massive win bonus?

I watched on Sky  a fabulous game between Napier & The Phoenix Reserves. Well done to both teams, Napier for coming back from 4 nil down with an end result of 5 all  and the Phoenix Reserves for continuing to play an expansive game.

Also, it looked to be a very good crowd

Having read that article by Anendra Singh in HB today I have some sympathy for Brent Angell. That journo was overly critical. Football is a game where people make mistakes and to write an article that suggests otherwise is pretty ill informed and you get the sense he did this maliciously after Angell's ill-advised comments.

A shame as its great to see HB playing good football and punching above their weight. HB fans should be proud of their team.

Your coach is an absolute nut-bar and the article just proved it. I've never seen a coach scream non-stop, complain at every decision and generally just be a dickhead for an entire 90 minutes. It was hilarious to watch however so I hope he continues next year.

I'm actually an ACFC fan. Trying to be objective. It was clear the journo had lost his objective lens when writing that article.

I wasn't hassling you in particular, apologies. Just saying having seen 90 minutes of this guy not caring what anyone hears I think this is a fair reflection of his personality and coaching skills.

i haven't seen him in action, but i'm looking forward to it because it sounds like a blast!

I have witnessed Angell a few times and have found his sideline behaviour to be Pythonesque.

Still, we can use a few characters in our game, and while I think he deserves a little bit of derision, I don't begrudge him his foibles.

As a coach, he has achieved results and on balance been good for the game, in my view. He's a personality. National league used to be full of them... Terry Conley, Kevin Fallon, Don Jones, Bert Ormond, John Adshead, Dour Moore, Roger Wilkinson... hell, even Jacques Vercauteren had his moments.

As for the journalism angle, as a neutral I saw nothing untoward in the HB match report and sidebar. As a sports writer you have a certain remit to express a point of view, contextualise and advocate. As a former editor once told me, "we're not paying you good money to have a ringside seat at sports events and NOT tell readers what you think".

I recall a very qualified coach once also challenging me as a sports reporter: "What coaching qualifications do you have to be passing judgement on my decisions in print?" I replied that my job was to write for readers, not some coaching think tank. And if fans were talking about coaching decisions, then the media should be as well.

In my view a lot of media coverage of national league matches has become too sterile. There is not enough strong opinion, advocacy or well propagated points of view (though I have really enjoyed the Herald's weekly Funbag, even if I must declare a link to one of the authors).

While the TV coverage has been fantastic for the league, my one quibble is there is not enough opinionated analysis in the midweek highlights programme. It's all to safe, as if it's pitched at little old ladies (with apologies to any little old ladies reading this).

Yeah Bruce - bring back Sitter !

Angell is a interesting character , but his results have been pretty damn good.

Would be interesting to see what budget he had compared to the other clubs - he really had a team of no names.

And while we are at it, and perhaps more topical, here is a Sitter column from June 2000 on media perspectives of Napier City Rovers Coach John McKenna...

Any word on signings for the Bay other than the Thirsty Whale and Canadian Maple Syrup

Other than Captain Milne and Parker coming back from Canterbury, are the likes of Sam M-S, Cory C, Tom Biss, Zane Sole, Sean L coming back to the squad?

Guess it would fall under the scope of 5.12 here

5.11 All Players enter the NL without any accumulation of cautions which have been cleared at the completion of their former club’s winter season.

5.12 Any Player with an outstanding suspension upon the completion of their former club’s winter season may participate in the NL as that suspension must be served with the club duly affiliated to a Regional Association that the Player next plays for (on account of NL Players becoming free agents at the end of a NL season), unless the Player's suspension has been imposed by a judicial process over and above the automatic sanctions under the NZF Disciplinary Code or relate to serious or violent misconduct.
