I was one ot the 30 people who turned up to Auckland Grammar School for the pre season friendly between Auckland City and Hekari Souths today 3-0 to Auckland City although they probably should have scored 5 goals or more  some new Chilean player scored two goals  and a new American player got the other David Mulligan looked ok but probably wasn't the best player on the pitch they looked more of a complete side than what they did last year but will probably implode in the semis

Good ACFC win over Magenta today 3-0, McGeorge, Mulligan and Koprevic.
Mully's crosses were great, serious bend on the ball.
The Magenta number 7, Kaudr was good at holding the ball in mid-field and moving it up without losing it.

Even better, Simon Elliottt's name is on the programme / team sheet #22.
I think that says, we are going to the World Club Cup Finals.

This is very good for Auckland and for the ASB.
After the signing from Mulligan is Elliottt the next All White, which play for City.
But I havent read them. They are not in the Website and not in the NZ Herald.

Fat Controller you must Know the lad personal to say such a thing like that. I dont want to knock the boy incase he casts his eye over yellowfever forum but for you to say he is their best player is ridiculous. I think even the lad would admit he was a bit out of his depth on the weekend. However he is young so alot of time to learn.

What position is he best in. Watched him in middle of the park preseason and was awful. Looked ok in a game at centre back. But then they played him as a winger, he must be the lankiest unco-ordinated winger in world football. He in my opinion should learn his trade as a centre back and the coaches should not throw him about anywhere.

Apparently Elliott is going to try his luck elsewhere until the january window otherwise he will play for City in the new year.

Elliottt at City? wtf! He is easily A-League quality. Wow that would be a good signing.

From what i have seen from him at Melville this year - his best role is in midfield where he can bomb forward but is strong defensively also - i think he will develop well...

2nd strong melville midfielder for ACFC after Mat Williams whom is a very under-rated player and Matt Friel wasnt too bad for you either.

In other words, fat controller only thinks melville players are the goods at ACFC.

Matt Friel was dredful for City. I dont think he got foward once and he was to soft to be a defender. Williams was poor in general play but managed to score some crucial goals. I hope Thomas doesnt get used as a utility while hes young he needs to learn his trade in one position.

I don't think left back was Matt Friel's best position, but he did score some very crucial goals for Auckland City, (often against waitak), including the free kick from halfway in the final and a number of headers. That he was pretty much starting XI that season in a title-winning squad suggests he must have had some qualities,

Thomas may very well end up being a central defender. But often the best central defenders benefit from playing in other positions in their youth. it rounds their game out, adds appreciation, they learn to "play" their way out of trouble rather than hoofing it.

I think Melville coach Steve williams has benefitted his development by playing him in different positions.

Disagree Bruce. If thats the case i believe Williams has holted his progress and development. Players can try many positions when they are young to see what best suits them. However at youth level they should by then be able to learn and develop in their best position. Lets be honest hes very tall, slim, not overly quick but isnt slow. Hes a centre back, he has to learn his trade there, once he does that we may see a talented player. But being used an utility player is not going to get the best out of him.

Who is the Chilean lad?

Hi Mr Raabit,
Why do you state that mr thomas is not quick?, he is quicker than any one at Auckland City.
Also before matt Williams went to Auckland, the midfield was not working, hence they lost the league. Once he was put in that midfield they got back to winning the league. I am mistified that you state he is not a ball player as every time I have seen him play for Auckland and Melville his thinking and ball play has been the difference in both clubs playing well.
Your comments seem to be a bit blinded or you are just another football punter that makes comments based on your feelings about a player rather than actually analizing the game you are watching.
What is it to be Mr Raabit.Hope these comments make you into a thinker and not a raaaabit stinker!!!!!!

I have heard it quoted that, if he was getting paid, which he obviously isn't because that isn't allowed, $75K would be the figure involved.

Whether that's true or not, who knows.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

I said Adam Thomas could be a very good centre back. If he sticks at it and learns his trade. I did not say he was slow i just said he is not quick with the ball at his feet.

McFarlene is just trying to build the kids profile and thats fine. But at the moment he is not up to the level but hey coaches have their favourites. If he scores the winner on the weekend it will be a confident boast for him and lets hope he nets on if hes playing.

Citys Centre Backs worry me. Pritchett and Hogg will handle Pearce and Krishna with ease, so i expect those two waitakere players will look to come inside and work around Aucklands centre pairing.

Rabbit whats wrong with the City centre backs?
Permalink Permalink
over 15 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
Both centre backs are strong in the air and win their headers. However they are awful with the ball at their feet, they panic in possesion. They are in all sorts of bother when players are running at them. They are an inexperienced combination and get dragged all over the place. I know Auck City are stretched with players in this position but they need Ivan back asap. Waitakere can only hurt Auckland down the middle. But lets wait and see and discuss after the game.

REALLY??? I saw ACFC play against Waikato and thought Pritchett was the worst player on the field, constantly gave the ball away, got exposed for pace and positioning. Also got involved in slagging off his team mates, trying to shift blame from his poor passing to Dickinson (not great for a captain).

Centre backs are both decent defenders but should not be bringing the ball out as much as they do, they should be giving it to the deep lying midfield player (Spanish lad I think?) as otherwise he is wasted..

Just my opinion of course...

That Spanish guy was wasted against Wellington. He did very little.

Pritchett has always been one to give away the ball. I suggest you find any video footage of him playing at RB for Auckland City and you will see him choose to hoof it when there are other options. Has ability no doubt, but he is not a right back. He should revert back to his right half, right wing role he used to play.

Awful game first half. Auckland deserved a point as they were clearly the better side second half.

The spanish lad at the back was outstanding!!! Will form a great partnership with Ivan when he gets back playing.

Berlanga i think his name is. Was superb. Haven't spoken to one person that has disagreed. But now hes played there they need to find a good midfielder since Mulligan is out for a while.

Otago this weekend at ACFC, 3pm sunday.  Pity Luis Corrales is out.  The return of Paul Seaman, but playing for Otago! And a chance to see if Phil Ruggles is any sort of challenge.

Geez, Otago played a solid defence until the last 20 minutes.  I'm surprised one of the chanced didn't go in for Akld.  Otago no real threat to the ACFC goal. But Otago managed a goaless draw.
A few words with Berlanga afterwards, I thought he said he was from Mavid, "you know, the capital, Madrid"...
