Anyone at the AGM hear anything regarding where the ongoing financial support of Southern is going to come from? Player levy as initially floated in the survey?

All quiet on the SU front?

I heard someone say Eric Molloy was spotted in Dunedin recently - am I just being a bit hopeful in thinking how good it would be to see him back in blue & gold this summer?

As cultured as Che Bunce's left foot and as profilic as John Lammers

Nice work by the judge, letting him off to give the New Zealand taxpayer the opportunity to incur the cost of surgery and recovery

The Southern thread seems to have died off this year.

What's things looking like for Southern United and then the local football scene in 2019?

The women's NWL squad announced today, I'm sure we'll get the other SU teams being announced soon with the season coming up quick.

Yeah, that's a bimmin good squad

Eric Panzer is quite under rated IMO and Fjortoft sounds like a good find. Any relation to Jan Age I wonder?

EDIT: Yip, Marcus is Jan Age Fjortoft's son

Shame about that website... WOW that is hard to read. Who thought mixing blue background with grey writing is a good idea.

Web basics ignored

Also, a couple of the players mentioned in the article are missing from the squad list below. I read the squad list first and thought, 'oh yeah not bad' but the extra players mentioned above make it a damn good squad

Al-Kalisy is a good signing too. He scored twice on his Tasman debut and got called into the Iraq under-23 team where he ended up suffering a season-ending injury. Surprised Tasman didn't try get him back to be honest.

Panzer couldn't quite make Wests Central League team this year, might've been above the age limit at 24-25ish though. Will be interested to see how he does, was hoping Tasman would come in for a local CB with Dan Allan heading to Hawkes Bay.

And, due to his 6 year injury layoff, Adam Thomas is actually 6 years younger than he is

Squad looks a bit light on defenders? Interesting as I believe they had the opportunity to sign Nomads MVP Cory Vickers after he didn't make the Canterbury Squad. Might be that foreigner capacity again.

Whitehad, Fjortoft, O'Keeffe, Last. Ledwith and Panzer are all potential defenders. Isn't Deeley a full back and not a forward?

I quite like Ridden. Any reason he's not involved?

Cory is training with the dragons at the moment. Don't know what you're talking about.

Gone very quiet here.

Seems there's a few Dunedin clubs looking for coaches? - lots of change down south, anyone doing anything new that might shake things up?

The Irishmen have stayed the course for more than two and a half years now, blown away by this country's beauty, the lifestyle and the warmth of the welcome, even though they have had to make some cultural adjustments to make and deal with some criticism from New Zealanders.

"We don't have fans everywhere," says O'Keeffe, 25.

"There are some people who are against imports. There are a lot more people who support us ut there are still come people who don't agree with imports. A lot of people thought we'd come here for six months and then be gone again but we're here for the longer term.

"We're working in football [in development roles for Football South], not just playing football. We're trying to grow the whole game and we're here for the long term, for the forseeable future so I think people are slowly getting onside."

The criticism upsets the 27-year-old Last. "You put on the Southern United jersey every week to represent the region," he says. "When you hear that some people don't support us it's difficult because the amount the effort we're putting in to try and get the club to the next level. For us it's about sticking at it and trying to get these people on board."

Little, the New Zealander in our group interview, is like the bridge between these players of disparate backgrounds and his countrymen. He has also heard the grumbles that the imports take the spots of Kiwi players and give nothing back, but he's having none of it.

""People get that impression from other teams," he says. "Auckland City have a lot of imports and they don't do any work, no coaching . . . People assume that's what happening down here but it's not. These guys are going to schools, they're coaching at the weekends."

Can categorically state that the foreign ACFC players do footballing work in the community. Zubi's my mate's goalkeeper coach, and I believe the entire squad ran a few months of courses at Auckland Grammar for 13-15 year olds

Its true that not everyone is happy about the imports at Football South, but i can back Little, these guys put in a big effort as football development officers in the regions, Skill schools, coaching courses etc. Before these guys arrived there was hardly nothing like that provided by football south to junior clubs in the regions. These guys are happy to help and and provide support where its needed and it sure was needed. Credit where its due.

While I am sure the ACFC players do more than "no coaching", it is highly unlikely that the money they get for coaching is reflective of the coaching that they actually do, and more to do with their selection in the ACFC team.

Yes, the imports should get a lot of credit for improving the development of youth / kids football all across the region. They also definitely improve the quality of the Southern team.

If they can also help to improve the quality of the Southern league / South Island league (playing/coaching/etc), in order to help players step up to the Southern team, then few could have issues with their contribution down here.

I thought this would also be interesting to Hawkes Bay types who have been complaining about the imports at HBU
