Southern Football (incl Southern United)

Despite a tremendous season the O.U Youth Team will receive no Football South accolade as O.U was not under a Football South umbrella. I am sure this will change next year, if Southern United still exists, as it is closely aligned to the federation. Coach of the year will come from outside of the top two (Tech, Cavvy). Wouldn't surprise if Luiz gets it in similar way to Malcolm getting it when he came fourth in 2005? at Mosgiel as he was becoming Phelo's assistant. Also for an inside running you want to check out who has the complimentary tickets, some interesting one's there already, and realise that one club in particular has more votes than the others which has in the past led to some unusual results. Also the samba drums sre still beating and the coaches will have learned much from the weekend in Southland.

My opinion is it should be picked based exclusively on the winter league. Sam's goal against Caversham? You must have had the same angle as Rab Smith. I was at the stadium right in line when he pulled the trigger. Took a fortuitous deflection which looped it over the GK and bounced before hitting the back of the net. Don't let Rab's bias reporting con you like Doble.

I think he Callum should maybe try and get in the starting 11 for Caversham first . . .

Good on him, the more players that make themselves available the better.

Look the kid wont make the match day squad but looking around I'm not sure he is that far off the rest of them. What he will bring is unbridled effort and maybe a naievity that will see him not give up where his more "experienced" counterparts wont see the point in trying. Without sounding like I rate him and think he is of national league calibre (which obviously he is not) he would also bring the option of a no. 2 goal keeper.

As a player Callum Flaws is not up to National League standard but as a keeper he is proven. If he hung the outfield boots up and put the gloves back on I would not have a problem he became the 2nd Goal Keeper. The only real concern is his attitude and would he upset/bring down the team culture? Interesting result over the weekend against a solid Invercargill side put together. SU should have won that match.

Team for Waitakere first up would be ---

------------------------------------Batty---------------------------------

Overmire------------Joy------------Fitzpatrick----------Mansford

-------------------Mepham----------------Import---------------------

Cunningham--------------------Day----------------------Coldicott

----------------------------------Import---------------------------------

Overmire at RB could work by getting him comfortable in this position in training. Hoping for a breakout season from Jude Fitzpatrick, hope to see him stamp his authority on the league. Joy is proven and would like to see him gain a good partnership with Jude as they complement each other nicely with their similar yet different playing styles. Mansford is a work in progress. Much like Jude another breakout season would be great for Sam, has the work ethic and attitude to take his game to the next level. Need an import along side him. Cunningham needs to step up this season I believe, lay off the party lifestyle and knuckle down. Has a great cross and shot at times but his attitude can let him down. This is Day's role, right in behind striker and above midfield two. I believe this because he is much more of an attacker with a below par defensive game, this would suit his playing style. Coldicott is a good player when used correctly, have him on the left so he can cut in and use that great shot of his, can be a game changer as shown in the past. Need an import up front because being honest none of the strikers signed so far are up to scoring in the National League.

That's my say as a passionate Dunedin Football follower, what's yours?

I think this is an intelligent post DM and a decent team.  First you have minimised the number of players in your team with no or little experience at this level. And then you correctly identify the key holes - CM and CF.  If no imports are available Ebanda could still do well in the CM role despite his years, and the boy Morris might do well at CF if he loses a few kilos.

Agreed a lot of sense Daily Mail.

Is Ant playing? (I can't be bothered trolling around to find out), because  he has proven that he can do a great job upfront at this level.

Cunningham on the wing? Are u having a laugh?

Batty

Overmire, joy, Fitzpatrick, mansford

Ebanda

Mepham, day

Coldicott , Morris , Rae

Ant not playing apparently. Howard and Attwood would both be better options at right back. Howard for go foward and great recovery. Attwood as a natural defender. Overmire, is the obvious next centre back behind the two named by Daily Mail. In fact he ball watches less than the two named as well.

Have seen at least one as good as that this year but was in a pre season game over the wall and in half way down the near post from 20metres, so will have to agree with TP for the award.

Both would make the highlight reels of the season if in the UK and get the player an England call up, eh Becks.

Great post Mail- just can't agree with Aajay on the wing. At this level you need a bit of pace to play on the wing and he obviously doesn't. As for upfront I think Morris will do a great job cant do much worse than last year

I would vote for Tommy Jacksons goal vs Roslyn

Apparently one of the imports Luiz is targeting is Mike Cunningham... Think he is a good player but think that he will be a bit big headed and disrupt the team culture. Would certainly add a touch of experience which is desperately needed in that midfield though.

Pretty sure the FS bunfight is at Wobblies tonight, have a good night to all who are going, especially those collecting medals and trophies.

Mike would be a great signing.

My pick is Ben Juda- powerful, strong and has a passion that is unmatched by anyone ive seen from the deep south in recent years.

Had a look at the inter squad trial match this morning. Standouts for me were McCormack, Ridden and Attwood. Joy added from the side on the website. Prattley played but leaves for Waitakere on Monday.

Agree with the second part of that. Fairly weak up top from both teams.

SU need to do what it takes to get Jackson from cavy into the team as well as Timothy McLennan from tech, some of the guys trailing wouldn't make fletcher cup teams.

i like your style Knowledge , i also thought Cunningham was pushed around yesterday, doesn't have the body weight, are their any more players yet to join the training squad?

I do like what the coach is doing

Just look at the SU team list to see how many of those players would make the team list of an MPL team [exclude FC20] in Canterbury.
Which teams played out the draw and who won the penalty shoot out?
Could be time to get some of the Canterbury rejects playing for Southern United again.
Plenty of good enough players up here not getting a look in due to all the imports the Dragons have. How are the imports/guest players coming along for SU?

Luiz's import target of Michael  Cunningham has seemed to have taken a set back. Cunningham has demanded $15,000 and the captaincy. Still in negations ATM.

WTF?  Well if that's the case I can think of 15,001 reasons to tell him to jog on.

So there appears to be money available for a marquee signing (of sorts) and the name mentioned is the son of the chairman. Interesting. Should keep the family in groceries for a while.

Don't you guys follow what your local team does?
No wonder it's only two spectators and a dog watching until you play Canterbury and we give your gate sales a boost.
Still no reply to the pre season hit out at the weekend?
