TEAM WELLINGTON TO PLAY CURTAIN RAISERS

Team Wellington will play curtain raisers before two Wellington Phoenix A-League matches this season, giving fans a whole afternoon of football.

The two organisations have entered into an agreement where there is a sharing of resources that includes a channel for the Football School of Excellence, and the curtain raisers are an extension of the arrangement.

Team Wellington General Manager Shaun Gill says that playing a curtain raiser at Westpac Stadium is a great opportunity for Team Wellington players.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for Team Wellington players to experience playing at Westpac Stadium” Gill said.

“The quality of the pitch, the facilities, and hopefully a few fans will be keen on coming along and seeing two games of football in the afternoon”.

Wellington Phoenix General Manager David Dome says the initiative further cements the relationship between the Phoenix and Team Wellington.

“This season the Team Wellington relationship has been excellent. We’ve really enjoyed working alongside them in building a programme that will help us develop the football talent in this country,” Dome said.

For the fans it also means they get a whole afternoon of football, as a Phoenix season ticket also includes access to all Team Wellington games – both the ones at Westpac Stadium and at David Farrington Park in Miramar.

Wellington Phoenix season tickets are currently on sale through Ticketek.

YoungHeart Manawatu will also play a curtain raiser against Waikato United on December 2.

At a glance

November 11 Team Wellington vs Waikato United, 1.45pm kick off (gates open 1.30pm)

December 2 YoungHeart Manawatu vs Waikato, 1.45pm kick off (gates open 1.30pm)

December 9 Team Wellington vs Otago United, 1.45pm kick off (gates open 1.30pm)

Interesting.  Ambitious and a bit risky too.

We've been to maybe 4 TW games over the last three seasons (possibly even none this last season), so we're neither hard core, nor totally plastic, but would be more to the PVC end of the spectrum.

The reason why we have gone is that it didn't clash with the Nix, so having a curtain raiser wouldn't be a huge draw for us - although we might possibly turn up 20 mins earlier.

Conversely having entry to DF Park might be more of a draw card when the Nix aren't playing in Wgtn (and affordable sausage sizzles).

Indeed.  On reflection we did miss all of last season.  I think we had a couple of games that were possible but in the end other commitments came up.

Any link to the fixtures for the 2012/13 season as a whole?  Not on the TW site at the moment.

In one of the other Team Wellington threads, I think.

Cheers.  Here it is: http://forums.yellowfever.co.nz/categories/asb-premiership-ocl/topics/32704?page=34#post_775985

And the funny thing is that I did browse over it when it was originally posted but clearly it didn't register as I forgot all about it despite (today) reading 2B's post that was linked on the home page.

Not sure how many people would be keen to stay at the stadium for 5+hours.  Families no.  Boozers no.

Wonder if they are better to line up TW games when the Phoenix are away.  at least people could lock in sunday afternoon for football.

That would be my take on it as well.

Had to go up to Newtown park, and have a look this morning. A Wgtn selection took on Youth Academy. A few players I have not seen before but no indication of TW  players. Oh well only weeks to go and we will see a team sheet.

Very sad for the young man, but after a series of bad head knocks I heard Nick has given the game away.

a lot of talk about the TW players playing for other teams right now, and fair enough i guess with all that's going on with the Phoenix, but can someone please provide some info on who is actually going to be playing for TW this season?

I would guess a lot depends on Nix academy. With only a few week to go news should be out soon as they need time together as a squad.

Wonder if any central league players will play or will it be all imports? Can only really see a few making the step up. Think the older Miramar guys maybe a bit over it huh?

sounds like there have been a few departures / non-returnees

maybe gilly can tell us who's signed up for this season?

there are even more key departures too

so, a potential championship winning side has pretty much been depleted

however, replacements have arrived in the form of the unproven academy players

will be interesting to see how this pans out for tw

with canterbury not really making great strides forward recruitment wise, this looks like another auckland-waitak-fest - both teams have been training full on for months and have recruited well

A result of the perceived links with Miramar?

Basalaj, Watson, Gulley, Rowe and Biss are all (reasonably) proven ASB Premiership players.

Doyle, Solomons, Bertsch not so much.

Wonder if they have looked at the likes of Ryder from 'rapa and the Irishman from the Bubbles (assuming the Bubbles anti-Miramar attitudes can be negated).

you're probably right about the miramar thing

solomons, bertsch and watson have all featured for youngheart pre season

bertsch is meant to be class

one way or another, the whole thing seems to me to be pre-occupied by the phoenix relationship at the expense of moving onwards and upwards from a very promising season last season

i hope i'm wrong

I know Matt did the at least the last month of rounds in Central league looking at players as well as many C/L + Prem games during the season.

Not from what I've seen and heard.  Rumour suggests they have talked to a stack of high profile ASB Prem players about coming here, just not sure they have convinced many of them.
